Go to any horse(or any animals like cow) stable. Ask for their horse shit. They usually keep a mountain of old poops somewhere near the stable.

Hmm do you mean to plant seeds? If so, I would observe commercial seed raising mix. I don't actually have any here but I was under the impression you want very little nutrients in it. I am casting my mind back here, but in horticultural studies, I think the perfect simple mix was 50/50 peat/sand. Use the horse shit and decayed leaves etc later imo.

So you definitely want some sand, and something more moisture-retentive to counteract the sands dryness. It should be fairly fine so as not to obstruct the roots or emerging seedling. Think light and fluffy. If the horse shit (or whatever shit) was really, reeaally old and decayed, then maybe that would be a good substitute for the peat. Something like decayed straw would be much better as it was never really volatile in the first place :2cents:

Or just soak em until you get some good mix.

Horse poo has the potential to burn seedlings if used to excess . I have never heard of dirt from the forest floor burning seedlings or causing any problems for that matter . It may be a little packed when you first dig it up , but it breaks apart very well . IMO - the best natural soil there is . Seen nothing but outstanding results here in the midwest whenever forest dirt is used . Can't speak for the south where clay soil is more prevalent or for the pine forests of the PNW .

if you got neighbors, find out which one is redoing their lawn this time of year and go jack a bucket of some nice rich dark soil, it won't hurt. Doesn't have to be lawn, can be any landscaping project. Only take what you need. If you need a lot, then get dirt from multiple sources.

Edit: Also, there is a good sticky or two on these forums, one of them by LOUGREW. And the organic soil forum has a lot of good information as well. You can make your own dirt using primitive and simple composting techniques. Other methods as well, tons of stuff.

grasslands are a nice place to find N rich, dark soil.. always check yer soil PH tho.

peace, bub.

um. i take itr from grasslands a bit. these well cultivated fields that have been for decades. u can even jus find a fertiel lookin spot at a stable to dig at. u dont need to take from the pile. ide rather not actually. Mossy areas wer its damp works beautiful but it doesnt drain well
jus thick n real fertile. throw some moss chunks in there even.
I take bits of soil from so many places to check it out.
