What's new

outdoor cloning..is it possible?

this year im ordering some female seeds, and being as i dont have enough money for 100+ seeds, im very interested in cloning.

problem is, i cant do any indoor at all, so my only optoin is, get the 20 seeds i can afford and do the rest unknown bagseed, right?

well i was looking around the other day and came across this mini pop up greenhouse

would it be possible to clone outdoors in this? is there any way to clone outdoors? just trying to plan for this year, hoping for a 20 lb+ harvest :rasta:

lookup air layering...it's a good skill.
a mini greenhouse could work if it's not discovered. white reflects light very good and it might be spotted.
20 lb+ ? hope you have the back to carry in good soil, the arm strength to dig deep holes and a close water source...otherwise keep dreaming. plus i doubt you can smoke all that.

i curl 110 12 times all day dude, ive got the armstrenth. and 5 years of growing with me, im not new at this.
my only question was will this greenhouse work for clones with no electric heating at night, discovery is not a problem, ive mapped out some beautiful spots for this year.
any help from someone who knows outdoor would be appreciated

it can be done man, but you need to shade very well the area where you plan to place your cuttings. i have rooted a good number of cuttings under a roof, simple roof with no walls around it, in tropical weather.
you need to keep the soil moist enough and no sun on the plants or soil. if you get cold temps at night it can be a problem, perhaps that mini gh u speak of can work. but during the hot day excess heat within that mini gh can be trouble too... be safe. good luck.

i think i might try air layering too...hopefully atleast one of these methods will work for outside cloning. well see this summer

I cloned outdoors last season......it can be done. Shady areas, so they dont get hot. And a baggie over the pot with some slits cut in it for air circulation.

I do it all the time....I take a standard cloning tray and fill it about 3/4 of an inch thick with a 50/50 mixture of perilte and vermiculite that`s already been moistened ...then i place the swollen peat pucks (Giffy # 7`s ) on top of the moistened mixture......snip the clones on site....dip them in the rooting hormone.......then insert them into the pucks.
I mist them with a b vitamin...then i put a high dome on them.....place them inside the fence where animals can`t get them and then i simply cut two fir bows and stick them in the ground on either side to form a somewhat shaded area........the pre-moistened perlite/vermiculite mixture keep the pucks from drying out......works every time.

Damn air layering looks like the shit!!! Thanks for posting those links!. I think i am gonna do that to my indoor plants as well.

i had one of those tomatoe humidity domes, a real shadey area, a misting bottle, rock wool cubes, and rooting hormone. every one took.

almost axed them all one day when i left it in the sun... they had tiny roots so i figured maybe a little sun would help. nope. but they pulled through. its quite a hardy plant.

Outdoor cloning has been easier than indoor cloning for me. I did an experiment last year, all I did was take a cutting off an indoor plant, and stick it into the ground outside in a shady area with a 2L bottle over it for humidity. I left it for a week and a half, misting every couple of days and took the bottle off, it rooted fine.

Quick question for those who take cuttings from their outdoor plants and grow those cuttings alongside the mothers . I'm asking this with the assumption that the mother plant is started outdoors from seed (or at the very most a young cutting itself) .

How does the combined yield from mother and cuttings compare to the yield of a plant grown naturally ?

i broke a big branch off a northern lights plant a few years ago. it probably would have gave me 4-5 oz (big branch w/ big branches off of it). i put it in a 5 gallon bucket with a bit of water in in and put it in a shady spot. the next day i ripped about 40 clones off of it and put them in a clear shoebox type container there in the patch and 2 weeks or so later i had 15 survivors w/ roots. i planted them right there and at harvest i avg about 2 oz off of the clones with a couple 3 ozers. i think the trick to getting the survivors was they were only hit with dappled sun until about 1 pm..shade the rest of the day.

Very helpful thanks!
I have very few femmed seeds 5 SS.
So i can just take clones on site and then plant them along side the mother plant....interesting...would almost look more naturally occuring with all little ones around a big one :chin: really got me thinking now! JS

Friggin awesome thread. That’s why I love IC Mag. I knew you could do clones outside I have seen it done on youtube by an Aussie grower.

Both methods look great for Guerilla growers but I like the Air Layering method (Thanks Gantz and Back Country for the links).

It gives you the chance to clone some larger plants to use as late season minis. Think about air layering some of the lower branches (once sex is determined) and using these clones to put some late season mini’s in the ground for a couple of oz’s each.

You never get anything but popcorn and mold on those lower branches and 2 ozs would be great.

Really great thread.
