Pot size question

Hello to all.

I have couple of girls planted in 6 liter pots. They are 30 days in flowering now, after 18 days of vegetation. Is 6 liter pot enough to take this babyies to the end or they are to small?

IMO, they are far too small. You probably could take them all the way in 6 liter pots, but for one thing...you will be watering EVERY day. Growth and yield will be limited too if that's important.

I'd pot them up to at least 3 gallon(11L)

Some will tell you that you are too far into flowering to repot. I just disagree. If you know how to properly repot, the plants will be fine. It's not something I would want to do on a routine basis, but in this case I think you'll benefit.

i agree with Pedro.
transplanting into a larger pot will far outway the slight negatives of the transplant shock and will increase your yield.

every foot of plant needs aprox a gallon of soil i've been teached.....so thats 4 Liters of soil for every 30 cm of plant you have ......

While I agree with the above 3 posts..

I was also taught that for every foot of height is a gallon of soil... and I also agree with the below post.. you should start small container.. till rootbound and then increase to the next size.. container..

I also believe that size should be okay.. you only vegged for a little over 2 weeks.. did you transplant into the 6 liter from seed or cutting.. these babies of a friend of mine.. have vegged for 3+ weeks under a 400mh..

he has been a little lazy.. They still look pretty green and doing well for a small cup..(his special organic mix which he tells me is an ancient chinese secret) and his last was in a 1 gallon..

.. he is planning on putting each of them in a
1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liter..
then a 3 US gallons = 11.3562354 liter
then into a 10 US gallons = 37.8541178 liter Scrog (sterilite plastic storage container)

so I think you'll do okay in a what you have.. maybe carefully check the roots at the bottom.. and if there rootbound or getting close then go ahead and transplant them..otherwise.. forget about it..

but hey there your babies.. and it's your call.. just my 2cents worth..

I was taught on Overgrow, 1 gallon of soil per month of plants life.

Veg till rootbound in 1 gallon, flower in 2 more gallons for flowering indica's, or 4 more gallons for long flowering sativas like Thai and Haze like this
Thai/Haze x Skunk#1 just started flowering,

when the leaves dont point up like they used to even when watered and ur watering once or twice a day is a good time to transplant also,

I dont think its good for the hairs on the roots to dry out once or twice a day either.
just my observation.

how tall are your plants.. ?

did you start seed or clone?

were they started in the 6 liter?

what size light are you using?

what genetics are the plant do you know?

just curious..

I neva understood the one gallon per foot of growth thing ... What if u topped ur plant or LST's it? ... It could only be a foot tall but 3 feet wide ... then how many gallons do u use? 1 gallon? 3 gallons? 4 gallons? ... Can someone help me out here? lol

That gallon/foot is a VERY rough guesstimate. A "rule of thumb" so to speak....and VERY misleading for the very reasons you state.

All plants, including cannabis, do best when the root mass is big enough to support the vegetation above. I may have misjudged my own current grow. My plants got much bigger than I anticipated. I have mine in 3 gallon pots. 2/3 of my plants are well over 4 feet tall. One is about 4 feet and is fine. I'm having to water them every 2-3 days. Hopefully they are done stretching.

Hindsite is 20/20. If I had known they were going to get this big, I would have put them in 4-5 gallon pots.

Between the lines is 40". Ideally this plant would be in a bigger pot. I don't have enuf vertical space to repot it though....and I can't LST it any more because I have run out of horizontal space as well.

People do flower stuff out in small containers. If you are wanting better yield a bigger pot would help. Otherwise they will finish in small containers. Look what beancounter used to do.

No, they started in 2 liter pots and transplanted after about 30 days.
what size light are you using?
650 W HPS (1x400 & 1x250)
what genetics are the plant do you know?
Well, 1 is Hashberry(1,5 feet tall), 1 Speed Queen(abot 2 feet tall), 2 are Kalichakra (about 2,3 feet) and bunch of Skunkensteins (thats Skunk#1X????, and they are all like an army, 3 feet tall)

Here are some pics:

On left side is Speed Queen, and on right side is Skunkenstein

^^^^ i do that in veg, then what ever pot i land up in when i want to flower, i add another 25% minimum onto the pot size for flowering

you know, I have seen many growers on here use 1 gal pots for simple SOG grows and they pull some good weight per plant...

There are also people that grow on here that use 16oz soda bottles and pull around an ounce per plant. I have seen 5 gal buckets harvest 2 lbs.

I do think that a larger root system allows for faster nutrient absorbtion, but I don't think that a small pot is a big a deterent as some people make it out to be.

IF you have your plants VERY dialed in, and you are giving them the exact amount of nutrients they need, and if watering daily isn't and issue for you, then a small pot can put out fine....you just gotta keep your plant fed...without over feeding and without allowing it to be under-fed either...as that will stunt your growth.

People that grow the same strain/ or from the same mom for many years, get there plants dialed in, and CAN/DO use smaller pots just b/c they know what they are doing at that point....just my opinion.

BUT this is not to say that there is not a point when you should just go to a bigger pot.

Maybe you are asking - to get "x" yield per plant, what size pot should I use? I think it is a preference/experience/yield equation that determines pot size...

35 grams of purple kush from 3 gallon pot

35 grams of purple kush from 3 gallon pot

This purple kush clone gave me 35 grams. I vegged about 30 days under a 120 watt cfl while they were in 1 gallon pots. I had to water every 2-3 days.
I then transplanted into 3 gallon pots, cloned the top 4 branches, then flowered under a 600 watt hps. In the 3 gallons I was watering every 4 days or 2x a week, but thats from the extra perlite I added to my soil. I should have added a little more perlite to get my waterings to every 3 days.
I do believe all the rules are strain specific and it takes a few grows of the same strain to really dial it in. The problem with us spoiled medical pot users is that we have access to so many strains and can't help ourselves in wanting to try them all! This plant is only about 15" tall but purple kush is notorious for vegging slow and being squat!
