TV's Aqua Globes

So I'm walking by and the TV starts to spout one of its usual lame as seen on TV ad's... but wait, it says, water your house plants for 2 weeks. My ears perk up and I start to watch.

This is the website: https://www.buyaquaglobes.com/?cid=496594

We would of course DIY this. I immediately started thinking how to make these quickly and cheaply. I took a 1 gallon bottle and shoved a BBQ squwer (I have no idea how to spell that), put the squwer into the soil and turned the bottle upside down with the squwer into it. My hopes are the wood will wick the water slowly into the soil. I also poked a hole at the top (actually the bottom) of the bottle to allow air to replace the water.

Whatcha all think?

Well...you tell me.

Did it work? I imagine the skewer would have to fit the hole pretty tightly in order to not let much water leak out of the bottle.

When you tilt the squaglobe upsidedown....how does all the water not escape into the soil? Is there a little one-way valve or something?

That was I was wondering about the product. My squwer fits perfectly, because I stabbed it in the bottle cap. I'm going to go check and see if the water level has dropped.

Do you guys realise the potential of these objects?

If we can find out what exactly is going on in the actual spikes....we can DIY large spikes that can fit a 5 GALLON BOTTLE!

You could water plants for weeks if you knew you couldn't make it out to the spot for a while....

....I'm gettin' wood just thinkin' about not having to go to the spot every week.

Thats my man, I'm thinkin' the same way. I got wood hours ago and haven't lost it.

Thanks for the link with 2 liter bottles.

Sweet mother of Jebus those are truely......truely great. Guess what Mr.Botanical's next purchase is going to be? :headbange

I'll give you one guess, sir. :muahaha:

Man.....this thread is better than viagra lol

Wait, wait, wait....you guys know how to make these things? I would love to make a few for $10 rather than pay $10 a piece.

I think we need to brainstorm, fellas....Brainstorm we must....

Everytime ive seen the commercial and can just imagine my 5 gallon water cooler refill bottle turned upside down. Yes, this idea calls for testing and holds promise. Having this bottle drip moisture on to that Zorbie material that would keep the ground from sucking it up and it would be a perpetual watering system. Keep up with your trials Mr. C. and keep us posted.

Those spike have got to be nothing more than hard plastic with small holes in them to regulate the flow of water. pvc pipes with epoxy to 3liter bottles sounds good to me. end cap and pin holes. (longer than a few inches also im thinking a foot or so) removable refill plug but i think that an air hole might speed up the flow too much. i think a slow (blub blub) instead of a steady drip would be achieved.
maybe a scoop of water crystals in the end where the holes are to also slow the flow. Now to build them!

The lack of the hole in the top is what makes the aquaglobes work...its that "glub, glub" you were talking about. I imagine having an open ended 2L bottle would just spill out into the earth.

I like this idea....but I do see a problem. These things are problably a pig's dream. I'm sure most of you are well aware that the temperature difference between the bottles full of water, and the earth would be drastic enough that they would be like signs telling the pigs "Hey...growspot here" if the LEO were to use infrared technology outdoors.

I think a spiraling underground shammy(around the roots of the plants) would be the best bet at better water retention. Maybe throw some crystals in there too.
