Bag Planting

I seem to be coming across a lot of undiggable ground that gets good sunlight. A lot of swamps and such. So I'm probably going to have to be importing lots of soil and id like to avoid digging in swamps and just import the soil in its own bag and plop it down, cut it open and put the plant in it.

Ive seen people use burlap bags for this but those are just kind of expensive especially if I needed a lot of them so would a regular black garbage bag work?
Id probably cut the bottom of it so the roots can get out. A bag definitely wouldnt have enough root space for a plant getting 6-8 hours of direct sun light a day.

I plan to just fill the bag with regular miracle grow potting soil, nice light weight and everything.

Any advice on bag planting?

I wouldn't cut the bottom off.. i would just poke holes in it.. Using a Five Gallon bucket would work better i believe. More sturdy.

The cost of buckets adds up-5$ buckets x 40 plants=200, Growbags are much cheapier and Im sure you can make them sturdy by tied them to something + the weight of soil should hold the bag.

i wouldnt use a black garbage bag. growbags are cheap, and they wont cook your roots. and they are black.

growbags rock.

I've done it using soil bags. Buy soil, mix in your amendments, poke some holes in the bottom, add plant.

In hind site black grow bags would have been much better as the soil bags were quite noticeable.

Another thought is to go buy some burlap at the fabric store and stitch up your own sacks, they have different colors too, like green.

Yeah, the only way i would use the bucket idea i had, is if you saw some on the side of the road for sale, like i see alot here.

Grow bags would work TONS better.

I also like the idea of making your own burlap sacks. ^_^

5 gallon buckets are pretty easy to get for free. Restaraunts, Donut Shops, Paint shops, auto mechanic shops. Ask them to save you a couple instead of throwin them in the dumpster. I have got quite a few off a donut shop I frequent over the years for all sorts of things, not just growing in them. I cant believe anyone would pay for a 5 gallon bucket. Where do they sell them?

Good Luck with the swamp grow DirtDevil!

I like the burlap idea because the roots should be able to grow right threw it when its wet.... right?

I found some 3x24 rolls on sale for 11.99 you think 3 feet is wide enough?

Hey DirtDevil,\

I use buckets and drill a bunch of 3/4" holes in the bottom and lower sides. If you go to any residential building site you can get them for free. Drywallers use 20-40 buckets of DW mud per house and then toss them in the dumpster. I picked up 12 yesterday from the dumpster.

Something Ive done that works well is to dig my hole and then line it with weed mat. You know, the fiberous stuff you put under mulch to prevent weeds. It breaths and lets moisture through. Of course, you cant dig a hole.

Feedbags from the local farm supply store are usually cheaper and much stronger. Our local "Southern States" store sells them for 1.00 and the burlap for 2.00. Grass seed, horse feed, cattle feed come in them. You wil have to punch some holes. The bag idea should work but i would stick with smaller strains that finish early. A large strain would grow up quick, fill your bag with roots and then when flowering set in, there would be more growth than the bag could support. Thats my belief anyway.

This type of location is the very reason I use the forced flowering approach thats posted up here in another thread. I look for these sites to place my 2 gallon pots, force my clones and in 50-60 days i have a harvest. B ecause each plant is smaller, the pot can be much smaller and the amount of dirt and supplies I have to pack in is limited. My harvest is not limited. Check it out.

Sounds like it should be enough... perhaps get two if they are on sale, Save it for next year if you do not use it.

And you know how to sew?? if not i hope you have a girl friend..

lol

Good day.

not 100% on subject...

if you cut the holes like 4-5" above the bottom of the buckets, would that be fine?

you know, keep like 5" of water in the bottom, and then 2" of soil?

im always trying to save waterings, and ive had good succes having almost hydro roots with a plant put inside of a second pot, so it would fill the bottom pot with "overflow roots".
