so who here has actually completed a swamp grow? i had a couple plants last year on the edge of a swamp.. they got stolen the last week of flowerin but it was more of a "i wonder if i could grow good bud?" type of things.. so it wasnt secure nor did i really care. i will say though.. the plants loved the enviorment.. about 5-6 hours direct.. the rest partially shaded.. on a clone and another plant started late.. that had a single cola.. it was around prob an ounce of bud.. and from what i heard.. it was some of the best bud these people that stole it ever smoked.. so im guessin it was dank.. and we didnt flush or anything.. and they said it tasted great!.. oh well.. so much for those kids but.. peeps.. lets hear some results!.. lets see if you guys can get me to go for another more 'professional' grow.. i got the knowledge.. but i WANT that experience so many of you got.. so lets see some results! lets make some new green thumbs.

They grow good in swamps because of all the sunlight.
Ive grown on the edges of swamps with great results, never out in the middle of the swamp though which I think I plan on doing this year.

my biggest concern is getting them rooted somehow with out getting root rot.

Yes, practically all 25 pages of my gallery are of swamp grows. The dried buds are the result of the swamp grows. I have a few indoor pics as well, but those are obvious because they were taken inside.

we make "tubes",in the swamp.dig a large hole, then make a tube out of hog wire for the planter.line inside(not bottom) of wire tube with poly.add lime to bottom of hole.backfill planter with desired soil.with the proper nutes u shouldnt have to water.set and forget.

Hey greens whatsup! Nice plants man! In some of the picture it looks like your using containers. Do you just drill holes or cut the bottom off and bury it a couple inches down? I'm curious because this is what I'm doing this year on the edge of a swamp where its a little marhsy. So please inform me on this subject. Thanks man peace!

Last year I grew in the middle of a swamp, more of a bayou, really. Thousands of little islands from 1 to 400 sq ft with from 1 to 7 feet of water between each island. I had to grow in containers as there wasn't any really useable soil on the islands. They got excellent light, and the plants only problem was outgrowing the 5 gal buckets I used before the end of the first week in July. I love swamps, and am growing in a different one again this year.

I'm planning on trying the swamp tube idea this year, I think it makes growing in swamps a whole lot easier.

I also have a half-assed theory that the large amounts of decomposing plant matter that occurs in swamps as the water level drops over the summer causes a natural CO2 supplement. I know plants don't need any extra outdoors, I said it was a half-assed theory, but it sounds plausible to me.

I actually just looked up wether or not I'm right while I'm waiting to be able to make this post, and if this source is right, then I'm right. The lower groundwater level in the summer allows air to get into the leaves once trapped underwater, and there are higher amounts of CO2 in the air in swamps during the summer. They sure stand out in the swamp land. I like the tube idea over bucket or pots. The buckets stand out too much.

Any tips on quick and quiet ways to dig a hole for tubes / buckets / soil amendments? The ground in my marshy areas is pretty much solid roots from the brush, 1-2 cm. diameter size. Not impenetrable, but a shovel isn't much good. The spots aren't so far into the wilderness that I'm comfortable with an engine-powered hole digger. I'll probably try a pick axe.

Greens has the swamp grow nailed. Pay attention to him.

I have a few pics of my swamp grows over the last few years in my gallery as well. My buddy and I (the other head of two heads) have been swamp growing for about 8 years now. We have tried 2, 3, 5, 8 and 15 gallon containers (8 gallon being bushel baskets which work well but don't last) We now use 15 gallon Rubbermaid totes. With any size container we get about 0.5 oz per gallon but the larger containers are less susceptible to flooding or drying out. Always poke holes in the bottom but don't cut the bottom out - you may need to move the containers as water levels change.

You don't have to venture far into a swamp for security, just make sure your entry/exit leaves no clues. Enter via deep water and/or fallen logs to avoid footprints and trampled vegetation.

Don't expect to get your soil from the swamp. Haul in ProMix with your containers and whatever else you want to add. For trouble-free growing, try Osmocote temperature/time release fertilizer for once per season fertilizing and Osmocote to absorb water when the swamp floods and release it as water levels drop.

I like to use the marsh as a nursery. As said not many people are willing to wade through the cold water and uneven ground this time of year.

im going to be doing the same thing with 5 gallon buckets this year. the swamp im working with is mostly standing water with little islands spread throughout, it gets good sun too with just little hardy shrubs growing out of the water.
i guess i will drill holes in the bottom of the buckets and bury a few inches down to wick water so i never have to water as you all said, im just worried about root rot and confused about how dry the soil should be to avoid root rot.
which brings up the question how wet is too wet? this is my first real grow so input is greatly appreciated.
peace

I want my roots to grow out of the bags, im just concerned about what theyll be growing into. Id assume it cant stay soaked all of the time.

i had a thread that never took that was talking about swamp grows. Im very interested in this subject. i think it is the perfect spot to plant. less likely someone is going to go back there. so i think it is ideal for a outdoor patch. i would think that the 10 gallon grow bags would be superb. but they would haved to have slits in the bottom for roots to grow out of to truely be a superb grow. if i can get back to my swampy area i will be all over this subject this year.

Peace, slow

Hey Greens, what are the biggest pitfalls you've encoutered in swamp growing? I'm considering piling up little mounts into the swampland. You never know if it's gonna be a dry summer or a wet one.
