Is Styrofoam strong enough to replace the lid (suspension) of a DWC?

Hey everyone, just wondering if Styrofoam is strong enough to replace the lid (suspension) of a DWC?

Like say, the lid (which holds the netcups) of my hydro system is damaged, and I need something else to suspend my plants over the reservoir. Would a custom-cut piece of Styrofoam do? :chin:

i would say the weight of the finished canopy would have to correspond to the thickness of the foam (thicker=more buoyant).

an interesting question, any foam experts out there?

Yeah, it can work, but even thicker it can be broken easily. Not using these anymore, but they work.

Yep, but if you are really paranoid. You can also make it stronger with fiberglass repair kits from Home Depot, OSH, or Lowes. I've use the stuff to water proof reservoirs and even build reservoirs out of styrofoam.

I wouldn't do it again. Couple oyears ago I came home to a Sensi Star that buckled my styro lid w/ 5.5" netcup. Snapped my girl right in 1/2 :(

lids are like a $1 at any hardware store/walmart, why not just get a new 1?

Thanks for all the responses; you all were very helpful. (thanks haps)

Ogatec- The dubbermaid I need a replacement for is a no-brand knockoff, so i doubt I'll be able to find a suitable replacement.

I'm all ears to hear other accounts about Styrofoam used this way...

Floating styro is a different gig, it also works, but I do not recommend it, it promotes too much moisture into the grow.

The water bottles in this pic are to balance the iceburg float
