havent shampoed my mop in a while...still no dreads...

ash u gotta wash your hair if u want dreads.

just no conditioner.

if you dont wash your hair then your hair/scalp will create its own "conditioner"...its called oily hair, and it wont dread. (speaking to caucasions)

wash your hair about once or twice a week w/ soap only (no conditioner)...depending on how oily it gets.

as long as your thin, straight, hair is your gonna have to help it dread at this point....or else your gonna get sum nasty ass klumps.

pm me if u want solid advice

just wash w/ shampoo that doesnt have conditioner in it.

head and shoulders is a good choice cuz it'll help w/ dandruff if your prone to it at the same time.

i never had dandruff issues, but used that stuff and it was fine.

ok ill tell ya what u gotta do with what u got here in the open forum then...

others can critisize that way too...i suppose.

...first your hair is too long to dread naturally at this point...youll just have a bunch of big neglected matts if you go natural now.

section your hair into ponytails.

twist it and backcomb the sections, and add a teeeeeeeeny bit of wax (beezwax from sally beauty supply) or "knottyboy" stuff (just search "knottyboy"...its actually ok gear.....just dont use much.

twist and backcomb, twist and backomb, twist and backomb....for hours and hours.

this will make you look like a dork for quite a while.

...asians w/ dreads use a small crochet hook to weave tangles into straight hair when they start dreads....that may help.

get high and twist and backomb w/ your fingers...that will become habit.

it wont look good overnight.

I remember when I started my dreads they looked like complete shit for a long time until the knots started to get tight. It definetly takes a while for them to look nice. when i had mine i would constantly work on them without even know it. it just became a habit. i still have the habit to twist my hair sometimes even though i got rid of my dreads.

I have no idea how I missed this thread... Nok, Thank you for sending it to me...

I'm prolly gonna sound pissed, but I really am not mad.... just exasperated with still having to deal with some of these things, even more so on a website like this...

People C'MON! Tell the REAL Truth!.... I KNOW you can taste that sour garbage you have pouring out your mouth when you're saying/writing things so ignorantly!!

Im no expert on the subject, but I understand enough to be able to correct a few misinterpretations of the history and philosophy behind Dreadlocks...I think some light needs to be shed on this topic, otherwise those who dont know, remain unknowing... I know alot of Dreads have gotten tired of tryin to expain it, but when we say nothing, nothing changes...

It is very much desolate foolishness to believe that everyone who wears Dreadlocks in todays world is wearing them for Religious/Spiritual reasons and not as a fashion... and vice versa... Not every Black man with Dreads is a Rasta or Jamaican, and not every Rasta portrays this image >>>> :rasta:

DreadLocks are not a "Black" "Rasta" or "Jamaican" entity... It was the Ancient Northern Africans and Indian's who first adopted the ''Dreadfull Knots"...

Being here long before the Bible, these traditions manifested themselves in the verses within the Books of Numbers, Judges, Samuel, Timothy and Revelations to name a few...

But there have been countless interpretations of these Books and so there are many different views and beliefs on Dreads even within the Dreadlock wearing community.. this is particularly true within the Rastafarian Community....

Many parts of the True Rastafarian culture including the propensity to wear "Dreads" and the Sacrament of Kaneh-Bos are founded in these Interpretations, and simply bc many of the most popular Rasta's were Jamaican, the Island has become synonomous with both Ganja and Rasta's...

If you look a little deeper you can see there is an obvious difference between say Bob Marley's Dreads and say LiL Waynes, Mr Cheeks, That Brother from BET Cousin Jeff's, Malcolm Jamal Warner's (Theo from the Cosby Show) and many other poplular Celebrities' Locks.... Well the truth is, there is also a Difference between how Bob Marley wears his Locks (Unwrappeed) to say how Sizzla Kalonji, Midnite and Capleton (Always wrapped) wear theirs... and an even bigger difference between Bob's and how the brethren in NOKUY's Avatar wears his....

In other cultures, particularly in the Ancient Asian cultures, Warriors and Soldiers grew out dreadlocks bc they believed it made them look more intimidating...

Some people have just one large solitary Lock down their back, others have very tiny and tight Milli Vanilli Looking locks....

Some look at it as just a hairstlye... Others as a Sacrement...

I would be here till tommorow discussing how many different cultures and countries have re-interpreted the Indian and North African tradition of dreading hair...

Just please dont put us all in the same boat... it is down right folly...

The only thing my Locks smell of is Coconut and Ganja smoke! What the hell u assuming we dont wash our hair for?!? I would bet your preconceived notion came from the media...

Some people dont wash their Locks but they also swim in the Ocean, natures deep cleansing spa, everyday... Others have no choice... You cant confuse the man who doesnt wash his hair with "Head and Shoulders" everyday with a man who has not a dollar to his name to buy any water and bathes using a fire hydrant!! Many of the negative images you see portraying Locks men and women are captured in the most impoverished and destitute communities in the world, and so you say UHHHNGH Look at all that dirty Hair!!!

Locks are extremely Beautiful bc they're so natural, however just like art, its all about interpretation...

I personally feel that not everyone can grow an afro but everyone can grow locks...Not everyone could grow a mohawk, but everyone can grow dreads...Not everyone can have pig tails, But everyone can grow dreadlocks... its one of the only things thats Guarenteed to happen to all of us if we let it happen....

And in the beginning and throughout MOST of history humans have worn Locks not Pantene-Pro V-super-shiny-flowing-in-the-wind hair or fades and lined up edges...regardless of your race, religion or culture, whether you believe in Allah, Adam and Eve or Nothing, you should realize that at one time or another we all wore Locks!

Im not at all saying cutting your hair or styling your hair is bad or wrong or not natural, Im just tryin refine Truth out of misconception...

Locks reveal the real you and test you mentally, physically, spiritually and in every single way every single day... There is nothing easy or lazy about wearing Locks, even if you dont wear them for spiritual reasons... I dont think enough people have enough respect for the story Nok shared with us regarding his GF... Perhaps other than Cannabis, tell me one other thing ANY of us have held onto and believed in with such intensity since they were like 10 years old?!?! How many of us ate, showered, slept and lived with that thing carrying it around with us every single place we went for 13+ long years... Perhaps tattoos would come close, but then again most tattoos can be covered up... Wrapped up or left loose, everywhere a Locks Man or Woman goes, everyone can see them... Everyday in everyway we face heartbreaking criticism from complete strangers on a minute to minute basis bc of this choice, and I would have thought this Ganja community would be amongst the first to relate to that judgement....

Ash, you are never too late to grow Locks, but just as Nok was explainin you realized that its alot of work... Im simply askin people to respect the work we put into our Locks... Judging us as Dirty, Lazy, Freaks or whatever makes you no better than the millions of people who judge all of us on this Website as drug dealers and junkies.......

Blessings

Headaches and backpain.. .well.. I'll do it, I'll call him a liar.

I've had dreads for nearing 20 years, there was a point they almost reached my feet.

I have cropped them shoulder length solely for safety reasons at work, I work with very large cutting torches cutting heavy gauge steel plates.

I have never once had issue, neither has my sister whom has dreads to her knees.

This was a good laugh though, thanks

Security 1st.
Dreads 2nd. :bashhead:

meh, the probability of any problems arising from posting my picture in a forum are slim to none. I'm not a criminal, so the police wouldnt have my pic on record, and I live in the US, but I don't really live in a place where the law goes to such extreme lengths as to prowl the vast internet for evidence to bust me, they give less than a shit about pot, because cocaine and heroin are consuming our youth, they only talk about being tough on pot; but unless you blow smoke from a blunt in a cops face. Even if they smell it during stop, if they dont see pounds of it in the backseat you're likely to get a warning ...I'm a computer geek, I keep my tracks covered when I explore this infinite nothingness. I'm high BadTicket, sorry for rambling, Happy Earth Day! *hugs*

Security.. again this is just laughable. Being a dread is not illegal. Being on a public is not illegal.

You motherfuckers need to put down the pipe. You are all prime examples of what anti-pot protesters scream about!

Your drug induced delusions of making us all look bad. No one is looking for you.

When you act like you are all doing something so very wrong, you simply perpetuate this stereotype.
