What's the current status of Thai landraces?

I need to spend a few months in Thailand, and would like to track down some of the old landrace strains that I've read about, such as Highland Thai and Chocolate Thai.

Do these still exist? If so, where would they be cultivated?

I know my way around Thailand, and I've bought some very good ganja there in the past, but I only got interested in growing recently.

I'll be based in Bangkok, but I'll be up in Issan and Chiang Mai as well. I have a number of friends there who will be able to track down ganja, and seed, but they are unlikely to know anything about the genetics. My real objective is to get a good supply of seeds for breeding puposes.

Anyone know the area?

I'm not trying to put you off though mate,apparently there are weed field's in Krabi Province in Thailand. But I think u would need a miracle to find The Original strains you seek and would be dealing with a lot of Intersexed plant's as well anyhoo. 'Thai stick's' with Red string still appear on the European market but are probably African fake's as it tastes like Swazi not Thai-stick. JBo

these days thai weed is low grade leafy sativa for the most part.mind u if u know the right peeps,with those valuable old gens they def do exist in some form.thai stick x maui wowee is one of the craziest,most potent sativa crosses ive ever smoked.mind bending,paranoid high.flying dutchmens thai-tanic is a proven winner,as well there is a few thai based hybrids out there that def are dank(T.N.R.,fruiti thai,etc).as well alot of strains of legend (NL,chemo,romulan,etc)more than likely contain thai gens.

These strains to exist still today, but its all about who you know. There are a few members on this boards growing some Thai landraces, so if they have them others have them as well. Depending on what you're looking for, think location. I would suggest the more remote areas of the country, but its probably not something you're going to find easily. So dont be in a hurry, but dont get yourself in trouble the authorities either.

What should a Thai stick taste like? Impossible to say, far too many different types of Thai!

Definitely not from Africa, and I think probably not from Thailand either, more than likely grown in Laos or Cambodia then taken to the Chinese border and sold to Chinese traders who process the weed into sticks and pack it for export.

here on the BC coast alot of thai weed and sticks used to get imported.we have alot of remote deepwater ports,and we as smugglers utilezed them to the fullest.we had guys with walkie-talkies every km or so on the road so we had distant early warning if the fuzz was afoot.heady times.we usually brought in shipments of 20 tonnes.
nowadays the thought of smuggling weed into BC is laffable.at any rate these deals were done and no one was armed.thousands of lbs,millions of $'s,no guns!times have changed.i wish i could say we came away unscathed, many were busted,some serving time in federal institutions(mr.nice is one).
p.s. dr.atomic offers a thailights (nakhon pathom x NL),sounds excellent for indoor.

I know there still is commercial grows around Trang province. Don´t think you will find nothing but import brick if you follow the regular turist routes..

BH and EM,please try to be less defensive anyone would think you grew the stuff originally in Thailand yourselves!LOL.
It may not be African but sure smells tastes and buzzes like it IMO and it may be from else where in Asia or even from Thailand(though the symbols don't look it IMO) but the point I wanted to make was it is probably not the same genetics that was in Thai sticks 20 or 30 years ago.Which is what the original post was in search of,I believe?
I'm sure your plants are as lovely as they look and your preserving of their genetics is as very admirable, more admirable than preserving really popular legendary strains like AcG,PanR,DurPois and the High and low Thai's which Everyone would jump to do given the chance.
I tried to sprout a few myself from same stick's but had no luck last year as mostly crushed pip's but I intend to grow a few more from better handled recent bundles as yours are very pretty plant's.
It is only because of you guy's posts and your success with the seeds that I have considered growing them again recently,meaning your plants were an inspiration for me.So I thank u for that as I wouldn't have 'Found' space to try them otherwise. So if you were offended by me saying it's like African I'm sorry for that,but Its my opinion which is as valid as yours and I was hoping to hear about some Thai stuff that I haven't already seen heaps of already.Rather than another lot of info about the 'Redstring'!...Thats all! hi all look not trying to upset but lets be honest here do you know what the chances of thia mj landing in urope would be since 9/11 or what the chances would be for it to go threw china and get threw china ?, Very very little they shoot people for drugs in china you think they can smuggle bails of it in and out of china with out being spotted.

I have seen African sativas that look close to thia if that stuffs in urope i would be willing to say its coming from Africa makeing its way to Albania and then into urope.
