i'm about 17 days in veg. 1st grow. plants look good, green, healthy, except bottom set of leaves are yellowish and not as healthy as all other leaves. all new leaves above the very bottom set are fine. is it normal for lowest set in veg to not look as good?

Exact same as my plants, I am not worrying about it because my plants look healthy as hell, but I'd like to hear some opinions as well..

Lower leaves dying is natural, but not on the 17th day of veg... If we are talking cotyldons then it's ok, they eventually go- but true leaves???

There is a good chance you are overwatering. Is there some oxygen down there or just mud? You usually don't see a nute def on day 17 so I'm thinking overwatering. Now would be a good time to pH your water also...

could be several probs. hard to tell with out a pic.
leaves yellow quite often as a result of many dificiancies.
seems really odd for a heathy grow to have that problem durring veg.
what are your specs.? fert, strain and conditions? light ect..

i have no idea what cotyledons are...i guess they're the lowest and oldest leaves...?
water lightly sometimes every day or every other. only when pot is light and soil top is dry. i think the 24/7 oscillating fan may be drying soil out faster. it's on low. i checked my PH. 8.0 right from RODI unit. runoff is 6.1. using promix bx w/ alittle extra perlite. only added 1/2 strength of cal~mag supp last week. next will be problend grow fert 1/2 strength maybe late this week.
- do u just leave those leaves or trim?

Its natural ...if it is only the bottoms. The fan leafs at the bottom are the first big leafs to fall . When this occurs then you know the plant is going into further stages of growing.

If the Top starts yellowing then you really got something to be worried about. Nutrient lockout is the most common issue.

Just leave the leafs that are yellow until they fall off. I save mine and later when I have enough I make a hash run with my O'kief pollen tumbler, gotta love it!!!

The first few set of leaves that come out will in time die-off. No matter how healthy the rest of the plant may appear.
Ideally the plant wont use the single bladed fan leaves...(first true set of leaves)...once alittle vegitation is on top. Their job is done. The plant(s) will concentrate on the others...pretty much where most of the light is.
However on low lighted gardens i have seen those little suckers hang on for loooong time! Just been my observation. Of course were talkin about plants that are stretching also so....
The plants that are shwon in the photo on this thread appear to be at the very start of a problem IMO. The 2 close up shots both show over watering maybe, and perhaps a tad hungry. However in the group photo they look pretty nice.
Next time watering comes around i'd throw in a small amount of nute in, and check the PH as well. Better to be safe then sorry.

cheers breeder :) that makes sense i guess. so you think its totally normal mate? im watering every 2 days and the pots do seem dry before hand. a few times ive noticed one of both of the plants have been droopy before watering so i wasnt thinking that i was watering to much. my ph is around 6.8-7 is that to high? ive been giving them half strength nutes up untill about the last 3 waterings when i switched to full strength?
cheers for the advice man and vindiesel, im sorry for jacking your thread man but i hope this helps you aswel :)

Do you rotate your plants at all? If not then give this a try before you decide to do anything else.
Another ? I have is....what type of water are you using. Tap, RO, ect., and do you have any idea on the ph of this water before using it, and after?

I mean your plants do look pretty nice though. Good job.
However were not out of the woods yet...know what I mean?
If this is a start of a problem, then it's better to find out now while it's still a small problem. I've had and seen plants go from a small problem to absolutly hidiuos(sp?) in no time.
I remember years ago on OG..(about a year after the doors opened), it was common place and normal chatter amoungst members to think that the purpling of stems in alot of cases were the VERY first sign's of a Mg def. in a plant.
And to be honest I bought into this theory. I've given my plants a fair dose of epsom salts at the time, and like magic the purpling of the stems have vanished. Seen it with my own eye's! However I'm still not completly convinced on this theory. Diffrent strains seem to have this purpling effect, and will continue no matter what you try.
N anycase I only brought this up because of the fact that you don't have this issue, but the spotting could be Cal. def., or lock out maybe. You are at the stage where this will start to show. Keep a close eye on it.
If your already feeding at full strength then I wouldn't up it any higher, they show no sign's of overfert. In fact for there size they seem to be taking it well...in stride as they say :joint:

cheers mate - i do move the plants around as the fan blowing on the is on the left so i like to swap them over once a day, im using straight up tap water with a ph of around 7 - is that a little high? the guy in the hydro shop said that i wouldnt have to adjust ph with the nutes he sold me but i guess he was wrong was he?

thanks for your help :)

No he/she might not be wrong at all. What are you using?
Have you ever checked the ph of your run-off water..(the xtra that drains out from the bottom)?
I've read where some say that it doesn't matter to check the run off. However I do belive this deppens on what your feeding them, and since we don't know.......
BTW....what type of meduim are you using?
If all else fails...just keep a close eye on'em. No real need to worry just yet.

Lower leaves turning yellow could be caused by a few things. The first being not enough light. Usually when the plants get larger there is less light available for the bottom leaves. This can turn them yellow prematurely. Another reason could be lack of Nitrogen or even a PH problem, but if they are only 17 days into veg I would think this is not the case, although very possible with soiless mix. Also, it is perfectly normal for bottom leaves to yellow when the plant is in the budding stage. Cotlydons yellow and fall off after just a week or so, so this is normal also.

These are the reasons I have seen yellowing of bottom leaves in the past. At least they are the most common. Hope this helps.
