Outdoor Weather Blues!

It is now officially spring and where I live in Maine, we just got another half a foot of snow. So right now in the woods I have about 3 and a half feet of snow on everything. I honestly don't think that the season is ever going to get started this year, I mean how long into spring before 3' of snow will melt when temps at night stay in the teens at most! On average, Maine's grow season is too damn short anyways.

This weather situation has even been effecting my ability to grow inside as well. My basement temp. won't get above 50 deg. in conditions like this therefore power consumption is killing me as far a heating goes.

Anyways, just thought that I'd rant about the weather situation way up here in the Northeast and maybe some of you west coast growers could post some outside pics of your early spring grows to cheer me up. On the plus side, my Maple Syrup project is booming right now! 70 gallons of syrup and still boiling!

Peace and Pot

West coast is bad too--we just got hit with a snow storm through the valley floors this weekend in Western Oregon, and freezing temperatures the rest of the week.

Hi Something vague,

We're all jealous marto!.

It was 66 here yesterday in kentucky and the trees thank god are beginning to leaf out. Before you start thinking how lucky i am you need to hear that in the past 5 years my weather has changed dramatically. I'm a farm boy and I have had to pay attention to the daily weather since I was 6 yrs old and believe me, the weather ain 't the same. We have completely lost our spring rains from the end of April until June. After that, the heat sets in. Last year was the worst recorded drought in history and we had 72 days with the temp exceeding 90 degrees and 41 days over 95! If that wasn't enough, we had a constant drought provoking wind of about 15mph. Even worse, it did not cool down at night. We went for 43 consecutive days without any dew because the nightime temperature did not decrease enough to create condensation. And then the hot wind, even at night.

Im sorry to rant on, but we have native trees dying b ecause they can't adapt and I truly feel the growing that I have done for many years is being jeopordized. Just like all the other farmers in my area, were worried and need a good grow year.

Just my despair. I hope others arent being so impacted by climate conditions. Sb

Marto, thanks for those shots! That's what I was looking for when I started the thread!

Silverback... that's some bad news right there man! We can only pray that the climate will start changing for the better in the real near future for the sake of animal and plant populations! Nothing worse than losing specific species of plants and animals for any reason. Unfortunately, most of the time the reasons are from human intervention. IMO, i believe we have messed with our planet way beyond the fixable point! If only all people could see and do something about the way we treat our home! Our way off life depends on it! I spent my whole life in a garden and each year gets harder to produce great crops. Like you say silverback, the weather seems to get the best of me for the past few years. You just never know what type of year it will be, extreme droughts, or heavy downpoors for weeks! It's getting old. Sorry for the rant. Hope things turn out somewhat better this year for you and the rest of the fellow farmers!

Nice to see all the Mainers coming out!

A very worrysome aspect of our climate here was that last year, plants that i have grown for years didn't finish when they were supposed to. I have grown 2 strains for years and know them well. All finished 14-20 days later than they ever had. This has been confusing but as Ive read OD threads from last fall, numerous growers from as far away as poland were complaining that they're plants weren't finishing in a timely manner.
That's ominous to me. Plants and animals can detect changes in the enviroment that are too subtle for us. Im anxious about this year. Did anyone else have a later than normalfinish last year?

La Nina is coming! La Nina is coming!

La Nina is coming! La Nina is coming!

Do not fret silverback, for this year I predict la nina will save us! For the past 7 years we have had an El Nino and it has been kicking our asses. I predict this summer to be full of thunderstorms that promise a great growing season... Well, if your in the Midwest your still fucked because you will probably get less precipitation than normal. The west coast should definitely see a major increase in precipitation for this season. La nina is well overdue and will hopefully make up for her absence with her massive rains.

Some information leads scientists to believe that a la nina may also cause southeastern states to have less precipitation than normal. After last year though, I kind of wonder if thats possible.

La nina's usually come every 4-6 years and the last one was in 2000-2001.

Yeah, the weather is great here but I really hope we have a better year than last year. I'm having nightmares about high temps and drought kicking our asses...

To the OP, I helped with several outdoor grows in N MI so I can relate. Don't worry, give it a month or so and the weather will warm up!
