This really depends on strain... I know it's not helpful; did you have a specific strain in mind?

no, just generally speaking.
Is it possible that you could grow a crop with internodes too close to each other that it would somehow mess up the yield?
If not then should I try and get it as squat as I can?

The only problem with squat spacing is condensation which can lead to mold. A small fan in the cab can cure that. My condensation is so limited, I merely give the stems a good shaking everyday. Added bonus, it toughens the stems.
