Perhaps this illustrates what I meant, here is an F3 Blueberry fathered by the male I chose by the hash making method, it wasn't difficult to select this male as he had a huge sweet floral/berry smell, even in veg, much stronger smelling than the other two males and he had more visible resin on his flowers too:
And here is one of her half-sisters, a Blueberry x Zamalhaze fathered by the same BB male, the family resemblance is striking, this is the BB pheno of this cross and the same huge sweet floral/berry taste and smell the father posessed is present in this example of his progeny, pretty easy to spot that he is truebreeding for his smell/taste and increases the yield, vigour and resin production of whatever you cross him too.
I put a lot of time and effort into selecting the parents fro the F3 Blueberry generation I made and that Blueberry male was going to be one of the key building blocks in my breeding work, but sadly my garden was destroyed last April and I lost him.

throw it away don't waste your time...
I always rub the stem to get their flavor and then smoke their younger leaves as a selection criteria. With a good male sometimes I get higher than a female bud of poor genetic.

-I also guess, explaining how smoking males instead of fems is a "BAD IDEA", (OBVIOUSLY!) has already bin explained.
So my advice is, flower the male('s) save the polin in a zip lock bag (the good kind) cuz it could and probably will be useful in the future. (I just found this. check it out. I'm sure you'll be interested.)
