Couple of Questions for the experienced ones

Hi guys,

Well my crop is coming along now, Im in week 6-7 of VEG!!!!
Mainly cause i want to try growing xmas trees this time.

Well heres my questions;

a- do you beleive in staging pots (in veg starting in a beercup, then a 3 gallon, the a 5 gallon - wait 4 days {to gain momentum} then flip to 12/12???)

Or does this only cause rootbound problems (since the roots are always making it to the bottom)

b- DO you use much/ANY ferts in VEG>?

I can only seem to add ferts gently in VEG (300-600 ppm)
Mostly cause the soil has so much goodness in it already. and if I add any more they seem to curl a bit (with 4 strains now)

And besides if you only veg for 2 weeks how much can you really add????

Thats all guys!

Thanks so much!!! :rasta:

i wouldn't call myself very experienced, but i have yet to feed during veg, and like you i enjoy growing big ol' christmas trees. my last girls were happy in ffof for almost 2 months.

a) - This is personal preference I personally like to transplant up. If you have michorhizal fungi in your grow the chances of being rootbound are significantly reduced as the fungi make the existing root zone more effective in it's job.

b) - Never feed in veg unless it's a long veg (over 2 months) then I'll add some tea (usually just some micros, molasses, and nitrate from fish water)

What type of ferts are you using that you are using a PPM meter?
When starting from seeds, I wait until I see a little nitrogen deficiency (around week three or four from germ). Then I hit 'em with guano tea at a ratio of 3-1-2. I keep that up until the second week of flowering then go to a ratio of 1-3-2 until harvest.
Tell us about what you're using and we can better direct you.

ferts- botanicare line (pbp pro series)
soil- burnones magical recipe (with added piranha - because i used sunshine #4)

- molasses at almost every watering (1 tsp per 2 gallons now - up to 1-2 tsp per gallon in last weerks of flower)
- dash of seaweed and calmag once in a while

So

a- being a little bit rootbound between stagings is ok?- cause they look a lil droopy until you move them into bigger pots>

b-
basically if you do not veg longer than 1 month you DO NOT need veg ferts.

c- if nitrogen looks a bit lacking after stretch (2 weeks into flower)
should you a- add a dash of pbp veg? b- add more pbp bloom to add up for nitrogen??

thanks a bunch guys----

:jump: This explains why i get damn curly leaves now :jump:

I'd say you should give them a shot of PBP veg as directed on the label at week three from germination and keep using as directed until the second week of flower. Use the PBP flower until harvest.
I plant my seeds in a 3 qt. nursery pot and go to a 3 gallon pot when I switch to flower.

When do you guys start switching to flower ferts?

-couple days before 12/12
-day of 12/12
-1 week to 2 weeks after 12/12
-right after the stretch (dependant on strain)

Personally in my first couple of grows I switched to bloom nutes directly after the light was switched and it definitely worked and well....I now wait until I feel like the stretch is basically over and also until I see some small fruit start to form...I personally have better results now with this routine....

I grow mostly indica dominant strains that finish in 8-10 weeks...I have never really grow any super long flowering sativas of 14 weeks or so but I would assume that they might need more N for a longer time so that they dont drop the fan leaves to soon..... Just my two cents though...

So in the end it depends on your strain really and how you wanna do it...

I have heard of people doing all of the options you asked about with success .

Feeding almost or totally pure sativas Nitrogen for too long actually lenghtens the flowering time. Sativas often needs to be deprived of nitrogen to get them to finish... Not my personal experience, but I've been reading a lot about growing sativas lately.

Your plants will need a lot of Nitrogen while going through the stretch that happens during the first two weeks of 12/12. I give them a full dose off veg ferts during that period.
After that, flower ferts till harvest.

timing transplants can be one of the best things to do for a big growth spurt imo. transplanting too early is a very common problem and will most of the time stunt growth. a healthy soil system will not get rootbound near as fast.

if the plant needs it of course. the soil should have some nutrients but obviously when the plant starts getting yellow you need to add nutrients. if the plant doesnt need any simply dont add any.
