Any idea when universal burn versions of these CMH bulbs will be released? I'd like to have the option of using them in a horizontal or vertical fixture.

Hey there,

I have a 400 CMH going in conjunction with a 250 HPS. 6 SSH, one week 12/12.

400 CMH Left side -- 250 HPS Right side:

THe plants we grown from feminized seeds, the whole way under the 400 CMH, with the 250 HPS added at start of flowering. The plants look healthier than ever ! I plan to upgrade the 250 HPS to a 2nd 400 CMH. Has anyone ever done 800W CMH grow? Take it easy.

why is silica recommended with a CMH????? I use PBP gro and bloom with LK and molasses but no silica, I will get some if you really feel that it will aid in the plants growth but not sure as to why it would need silica with a CMH and not a HPS????? Can you explain further? I just transplanted today from 2 liters into 3 gallon pots and they got a shot of aerated tea with veg nutes.

I have been running a standard of 800w CMH for years now. I have covered a 4'x6' grow in the past and yielded around 1 - 1.75lbs. The clones were always from a high yielding NL5XHaze (great strain by the way). I now run 800w in a cab that is 22"deep x 40"wide. I could yield a lb or more but, do not wish to. It is a larger legal risk and more work in such a small place. I usually run at the 1/2lb - 3/4lb and focus on quality!

Running 400w or 800w is really a choice to be made in regards to the area you are trying to cover and your ability to control heat. I may yet drop to 650w total ( I have unused 240w bulbs and extra ballasts hanging out) or I may drop it to 400w. Maybe 2x250w? I will still yield around 8oz if I choose. Glad to hear that you are having a positive experience with the CMH. Ditch the HPS for sure, just wasting electricity.

These are pics that I have posted before. The large (back/middle) plant has been killed! A fine looking, crystal covered willijuana that hermied just a bit too much on me all of the sudden. Given the landrace background it did not surprise me.

Good luck!

Looks like the 250 HPS is getting the boot and another 400 CMH is moving in. Thanks for the guidance! Those plants look amazing, and just looking at thos pictures made me want to get rid of that yellow light, pronto. Plants looks SOOOO good under CMH, it just looks so more natural. Not to mention growth is way better compared to HPS.

Also, i did not know that we needed to be adding silica. Are there any common commerical products, nutrient blends or supplements, that include silica? Thanks.

Ruba..
currenlty there are no intentions of having a universial burning CMH HPS RETRO WHITE>>
maybe later but not in works..

no wories, when you harvest keep them seperate from hps and cmh and toke the hps first then the cmh and u will feel the difference..

jackonjill, cmh provides more energy that the plant can use.. and plants need silica tofor the cells to dived properly and efficantly,, silica is good for hps to.

i got a new bulb last week and everything's doing good now. i'm about to get another 400 watt cmh bulb next week, so i'll have 800 watts of cmh as well. For now, I'm running 1 cmh\1 son agro hps. Everything's going in to flower tomorrow after I finish running a dedicated circuit. i'll post some pics soon. for this run the strains i've got going is purple erkle, caterpillar (local med strain), and some other unknown really good strain that i grew under fluorescents during the summer. i think it may be SSH, not 100% sure. hopefully the HID lighting will help decipher that. :) everything is from clone, most picked up from local co-ops. Simba, we're in the same boat. I suffer from UC too and am also on a MMJ authorization. i just picked up some mendocino madness, amnesia haze, and bubbleberry clones (also got 2 feminized OG Kush seedlings!!!) that i'll be turning into mothers. CMH rocks so far now that Ive gotten past my bulb issue. can't wait for another 60 or so days ;)

Somewhat offtopic, but relevant as these bulbs are not as hot as others. I have a question about cooling my 400w CMH.

I'm putting it into a 2'x3'x6' box, which is 36ft^2. Would 150 CFM be enough to cool this? It will pull through a carbon scrubber. My ambients are around 68F-72F year-round.

Also, could anyone recommend a good, quiet and cheap fan? I was looking at the Dayton 265 but I think it would probably be overkill. What about the Dayton 140?

Thanks!

They are too much money for me right now. :(
Hey mpl i hear ya on too much money. Fans are so expensive in canada almost double the price in the states. I really wanted a 449 cfm vortex and i went on a pricematching mission for like 5 days a few hours. I must of looked at every hydro site in canada and the usa lol.

this site was the cheapest i found, but they never shipped to canada, and i actually got a few sites to lower their prices and bought one from one that shipped here. I ended up getting the vortex and the speedster variable speed control for 200 shipped across the border. Some hydro stores here wanted 300 for the fan alone. this site has a 4" can fan for 95 bucks and like i said, these seem to be the cheapest prices from looking online http://www.mdhydro.com/inline-centrifugal-fans.html
the reason for my going with a 6" vortex was to run it at half speed so its really quiet, and only 18 bucks more then the smallest vortex fan, may as well
heres the site that matched the price that i ordered from, they told me the price will stay the same:

Great thread! I've always like the bud density that MH gives off, not to mention the vegging capabilities...

OK so I received and assembled my setup.

And 1 of the bulbs is not fireing up. :cuss: I checked both ballasts to work, and 1 bulb gets a slight blue glow in the base of it, but never fires up. Do I have a bad CMH bulb? How is Advancedtechlighting's return policy? Should I leave it on for an hour to see if it finally turns on or something?

Thanks for the input.

Have you swapped the bulbs between the ballasts? You may have a weak ignitor. An HPS may fire, but the CMH takes a bigger kick. They do start off blue and can take 2min or so to reach full fire.

Good luck.

HOLY SMOKES!!!

I can't believe you could run so much wattage in such a small area...What are you using for ventilation? I would think your temps would go thru the roof???

I also ordered a 250w CMH, but another quick question:

"simba Ruba..
jackonjill, cmh provides more energy that the plant can use.. and plants need silica tofor the cells to dived properly and efficantly,, silica is good for hps to." (QUOTE wouldn't work lol)

When I mix my nutes, I need to LOWER my PH, if I use the silica to get the full effects of the CMH, double or triple the amount of PH down will have to be used...Does not using the silica really gonna have that much of an effect? Will using so much PH down nullify the addition of the silica since adding the silica will raise my PH even more?

Kinda has me confused

I use a 6" elicient at the moment (350cfm or so) and I have a 449cfm 6" vortex sitting on a shelf. It is more about the ambient and how you circuit air in a given area. Most of the year it is 60-80F lights on and 3months it is 80-100F lights off and 75-90F lights on as the ambient gets out of hand hot!!!!

Currently 36-50F lights off and that is slowing my growth rates but, oh well. I am heating the area but, only so much as I am maxxed on KW.

Alright, so I guess 200CFM or more should be sufficient.

How loud is your Vortex and Elicent? Any comparisons to other sounds that I might be able to more easily relate to? If you aren't using the Vortex you want to sell it maybe? :p
