I beleive the base PH on black gold is a bit off, so the Dolomitic lime is needed. Black gold was super popular for a while, until FFOF came out. The FFOF is perfectly PH balanced so you dont need to add anything to it, except maybe some aeration.
Personally I had way better success with black gold and kushmans recipe then with FFOF. No matter how much perlite I added to the FFOF after a couple months the dirt would be too compact and the water would just run off. I could pour like 5 gallons of water through and 1 inch below the top soil would be bone dry....
Anyways good luck with black gold, it can be great stuff. Hopefully this helps you a tad, that recipe is very good^^
I use Black Gold, it ROCKS! I was told in the infirmary that it is considered soiless so the pH of your ferted water should be in the range of 5.5 to 6.3, but for optimum uptake 5.5 to 5.8. Ive been going about 5.8 and all is well.

I love black gold, any variation of it. I have used the orange and the pink/purple bag. The orange is the original, and the pink/purple is just a richer version I think. I'm not even sure if the price between the two is different. I use black gold now instead of ocean forest from fox farm.
I just switched this run from FFOF to the Black Gold and so far I like it a lot better. I didn't know it had pH issues though, I'll have to look into that. The coco-blend organic stuff is what I consider the perfect consistancy, now, how well it stays that way has yet to be seen.
that link to kyles recipe is dated and i didnt see anything but the homepage.
does anyone have that recipe to post for me here?
i just bought a chit-load of black gold!!!
peace,

Don't believe anything you read in high times! Regular black gold with 33% added perlite rocks with or without dolemite (my personal choice is without). The coco holds more water and it rocks too (dolemite & coco don't mix well IMO). Just depends on the season and your climate as to which one you should choose.
