Ethylene seed treatment

No you will just waste your time trying to force reg. seed into being females with ethylene. The best way to have a lot of females is to have super good growing conditions. Plus only use good professional breeder seed. Plant two of everything and your female count will be high.😎

By applying ethylene-inhibiting agents such as STS (Sliver Tiosulphate) you can induce male flowers on female plants to create feminized seeds.

I dunno, this technique was talked about and used, many years ago. They put the newly harvested seeds near a ripe banana peel, and put both under a bowl to trap the natural gasses from the ripening peel. After a time under the bowl, the seeds were stored as usual, i think.

If i remember right, they got a higher percent of females...not sure but 70% is sticking in my memory banks.

I didn't hear anything about hermies, or don't recall. It might make those 'maybe female, maybe male' seeds decide to go full girl, instead of hermie, i dunno.

This was the 'original' designation of the word 'feminized', back then. ( ...and when a plant was reversed, they were called 'female seed'. ) This was maybe only the terminology used in that particular circle.

So...if you don't want to go ordering chems, just use a cheap old nanner peel.

Thanks everyone I did the banana peel things and I noticed a bit of mold on some of the seeds but Ive sunned them so they should be ok - I've got about 3 sativas so I'm gonna grow them out along with the other seeds that were treated - since I'm here does anybody have any haze, tangie or other canna seeds there willing to donate please

What is ethylene and what does it do some here may be asking themselves, this should help to define and understand what this substance does. :)

Ethylene

  • Stimulates and regulates fruit ripening
  • Induces seed germination
  • Stimulates leaf senescence
  • Induces leaf abscission
  • Helps plants survive low oxygen situations eg. flooding
  • Stress response, particularly to salinity
  • Increases petiole and internode length
  • Sex determination
  • Female flower development
Ethylene or Ethene is a gaseous, flammable hydrocarbon that is hugely versatile and widely used in the chemical industry.
Indeed, its production exceeds that of any other organic compound in the world, and much of this production is destined to making polyethylene, one of today's most widely used plastics.

Ethylene occurs naturally through the breakdown of methylene and is produced in all parts of the plant, particularly in cells undergoing senescence and in ripening fruit.
Its action counteracts the effect of auxin and is what triggers the ageing process in plants.
Its main effects are to promote senescence and the ripening of fruit. It also increases petiole length and internode distance. Ethylene plays a part in breaking seed dormancy and promoting germination.

As fruit ripens it produces ethylene
As fruits like these bananas ripen, they produce ethylene.
The balance between auxin and ethylene has an important role to play in leaf abscission at the end of the growing season when the cold weather triggers ethylene production at the same time as auxin levels are reducing within the ageing leaf.

Ethylene is key to sexual expression in many plants, cannabis included, with female flowers requiring much more ethylene to develop than male flowers. By applying ethylene-inhibiting agents such as STS (Sliver Tiosulphate) we can induce male flowers on female plants to create demonized (damn auto correct) feminized seeds.

It is highly valued in commercial agriculture, where it is employed on a huge scale to ripen fruit that by necessity must be picked early to ensure damage-free transport.
In these massive commercial ripening operations, ethanol is converted to ethylene and pumped in to ripen fruit, but man has used the ripening effect of ethylene at least since ancient Egyptian times when they would cut figs to ripen them, as ethylene production is stimulated by physical damage.
This is the reason that we enclose fruit in a paper bag to accelerate ripening, or that fruit will ripen more quickly if we add a mature apple or banana to our fruit bowl.

I see that Ethylene "induces seed germination" which gives me the thought (its okay, it didn't hurt ;-) that Cannabis seed germination using a traditional paper towel method technique and placing it in a paper sack with a ripened banana in with it may, perhaps, maybe, could possibly produce a positive response (or not),
Never mind, it must of been Nanny mouse' previous post that inspired my brain-fart.

And No, to answer the thread starter here, I seriously doubt that one would require all that specialty scientific equipment that your eyeballing to conduct your experiment with. Of course, if its only money and there is lots more where that came from, have some fun experimenting away if that's your thing.
You obviously have an inquiring mind which is a good thing and will help as you as you learn the art and sciences involved in cannabis cultivation relatively easily, if you haven't done so already.
Welcome to the icmag forums. :)

Happy harvesting everybody,
Vandenberg :)

If you wanted to get serious op, you should look into methylating DNA using bacteria...not even gonna try to get involved in this, just telling how hard it would really be....but maybe not impossible.
Effects of DNA methylation

DNA methylation is an epigenetic modification, i.e., heritable change in DNA without any modifications to the sequence of DNA. It
alters expression of a gene during cell differentiation and causes a change that is heritable

Study on zebrafish and methylating dna to increase females ratio

DNA methylation
Technical studies make my head spin and drive me to medicate with Cannabis.
All it takes is to read the abstract and self medication becomes inevitable, so thanks alot.
Now I'm really baked.

Is there a a YouTube video with a quick cheap DIY hack for this?
Oh well, maybe next year, dare to dream. :)

My guess is some kind of treatment right after you germinate...once those cells start to divide (undifferentiated) is when you need the dna to get methylated, then every cell after that carries the epigenetic change...e.g. you made a female.

I wouldn't peel the banana, just put a ripe banana near the seeds and cover with a bowl. Maybe too much humidity with a peeled peel?

I worked for Chiquita for a while and they had a ripening room. Turn the greenees yellow in a day. They used ethanol to generate the stuff. But in my biology class we just used a ripening apple in a sealed bag.

Clones would be great but they only grow when I have something sativa dom hence why I'm looking for those kind of seeds - in Jamaica we grow sog style outdoors but from seeds because we don't have any good results with clones so I feel a way when I see you guys pulling of your indoor sog- I rooted a really vigorous bra nch from a plant and the clone once and in 3 months it didn't reach a foot and didn't give two good spliffs so I digress.
I'm going order kln rooting concentrate to get clone roots going because I Believe clone roots have to be helped along a lot till they reach a certain stage before it makes sense - the garden in the picture was dedicated to mother's from which I took clones to show you how much I tried to invest in cloning.

The ripening room used 100% ethanol as the feed for the gas. Another place I worked they made their own vinegar and used their own fermenters and microbe tanks to convert he ethanol into vinegar.

Anywhere the 100% ethanol was used they treated it like gold and locked it up for limited access and made you sign your life away to get to it.

Brother you live in Jamaica, you should not need to buy clone juice or clone powder.

First, you must thoroughly understand how to make clones with only fresh water, not the tap water.

Keep your cutting in a cup of fresh water, and drain the water and pour new water every 2 days.

After 10-14 days you will see the white bumps on the stem starting your new roots, maybe you see some small root tails but those will be much thinner than the big solid white root bumps.

You want to have even 15 or 20cm of stem in the water so you have that many more root starts.

Once you have your root starts you want to remove the plant from the water and immediately give it a home in moist soil.

Cover the moist soil with a healthy layer of dry grass or straw or leaves. Make sure you have plenty of leaves to catch sun rays too and make sure your stem with the root bumps is all in contact with the soil.

Be gentle in the whole process.

Make a nice hole for the stem and hold it in place before pushing the soil into the hole and lightly press the soil to keep the plant standing up.

If you can find clear plastic bottle to cover the plant do this.

You can be doing this whole process indoors with indirect light from the window or under shade cloth outside. The sun will burn up your plant under that plastic. The plastic is to keep the humidity high but not wet! To make sure your soil and roots do not dry out.

You want to be misting the plant and keeping the soil moist but not wet all the while.

After 10-14 days your plant will suddenly begin to explode with growth and looking happy again and then you can take to sun wherever you like.

Now for your clone powder you live in Jamaica so this resource is free if you can find your way around to some places.

Go to the beach and collect the sea kelp in a large sack. Rinse the sea kelp in fresh water to get away all of the salt. Dry the sea kelp under the sunlight and make sure the wind or rain does not mash or wet it up. Turn your kelp into powder, now you have a free clone powder.

Another way is to find the Willow tree. Take the willow bark and soak it in fresh water for 24 hours. Dip your clone in the willow bark water.

You can practice mixture of the willow bark tea with the kelp or you can add fruit peels and soak them too, just be irie with it.
