anyone else here like this? if i can build it, i will. need a fence built? i still have post-hole diggers. i guess most of us know that "if you want something done right..." i'm looking for a used rototiller now. so damn old that i WANT to plow up a garden spot out back, lol. hated the fucking things when i was younger...i enjoy the feeling i get when something gets finished, and i can look at it and go "fuck yeah!"

I won’t let anyone do my work for me. I did have some professional tree guys cut down a dead tree that was over my power drop. Fuckers knocked down the service and dang near burned my house down.
I was like”I could have done that”
Me and the wife are a good team, we have moved sheds, poured concrete and built fences and gardens,covered decks and installed doors. She cuts the grass while I drink beer.

I used to do everything. Not anymore. I only have 15-20 years left and I'm not going to spend them on my knees laying tile or hardwood, so I pay people for that. I only do the fun outdoor stuff now and my plate is full for this year.

You guys... I have to plant a bunch of trees to bloc off houses going in next door. Maybe 40 or so trees. No fuckin way will dig those holes by hand in hard red clay. The only thing stopping me so far is the driveshaft on my 12" PTO-driven auger is a little messed up... and hiring a helper. When you get older you work smarter, not harder.

Edit" When I finish getting those holes dug, I will go into my garden like the pic, and make holes 5' x 5' apart. I am gonna throw in a chunk of oak tree and make "termite tech". I will backfill the hole with black kow and lime and the red clay that came out. That's some nice looking soil there.

Nice furniture to cabinets to houses...

I was a first-class, professional carpenter for most of my life, so it only made sense for me to build my own house..
When I was 53 I sold the house I had a mortgage on in the city, and made a tidy profit on it.. It was on a "postage stamp" sized lot..
I moved to country and built an almost 2000 sq. ft. house... I hired a couple teenage boys for laborers, to help me lift heavy stuff..
I dug and poured the footing, so I knew it would have a solid foundation..
I did the electrical and the plumbing so I knew it would be installed correctly..

Only thing I hired out was the tape and bed and finish on the sheetrock and a roofer to install the architectural shingles on the second story roof...
Oh, I also hired a pro to dig and install the septic system...

Pretty happy with the results...

Right now I'm getting started adding on some size to my workshop building so I'll have room to dry my harvest, instead of hanging it several rooms of the house...
That's gonna make Mrs. G happy...

There's a sense of pride of doing a job yourself, and knowing it's done right.

Just planted an area about 8 x 10 feet with corn.

2 corn seeds in every hole, holes get covered with dirt, then watered with a tiny amount of water.

Feels primitive but I know I will like the result. It's wierd to see the plants wait up to 3 weeks sometimes before they sprout. Freezing temps overnight may be part of that.

I do most work myself because you can't get people to come and do it. I have several projects I would hire out if I thought it would work OK and be fair. That is why I bought the equipment I have. Luckily I have a broke electrician friend, cause at my old arthritic age I am kinda a hack with the dexterity and close eyesight.

There is a very slippery slope with how much you can get done in the time you have, as the remaining time declines. Getting stoned all the time, hanging around annoying people on the webs, doesn't help.

i don't let my wife/kids mow. my lawn tractor was too expensive to let someone hit a rock with the blade & shatter the engine housing. (had that happen TWICE!) flylow - i don't blame you for using a power auger while planting trees. nope, not at ALL.
