Best outdoor hydro?

So this coming spring, I'm going to be setting up a little grow on my porch. I don't think I'll be able to grow marijuana, I might have to stick to tomatoes and peppers, but I think it would be a good learning experience.

I was thinking either recirculating DWC or some kind of bio-buckets. I plan on having two plants, each in a 5 gallon bucket, side by side, with a large reservoir on a shelf below them. I might set up a little PVC greenhouse around it, if the benefits outweigh the cost.

I've got about 18"d*36"w*96"?h to work with, on a southeast facing deck. I live in New England, so they probably wouldn't be able to go outside until early June. I don't know how that is, but I could definitly grow them in a different setup for the first month if that was beneficial.

Check out BonecargerOG's thread. He does outdoor hydro on his porch, but it is not a normal hydro system. He grows in coco coir innert medium and waters with hydro solution. That may be the easier hydroponic method for outdoors. A normal hydro system may get nasty sitting outside in the summer.

I've toyed with the idea and think it has great potential (outdoor dwc). be sure to thoroughly light proof.. I'd bury the buckets if possible, or maybe build a frame around them and cover with panda plastic etc to keep out light and heat. I think rez temps are likely to be the biggest issue.

very interesting idea though, good luck

Yeah I was thinking about building a little frame around the buckets and res and doing the black/white poly, maybe with a fan for ventilation. I dunno, there could be some potential. I think that's the biggest factor, keeping rez temps down.

Why torture yourself with keeping down rez temps? I think it would be easier to do drip into coco or something similar. Come to think of it isn't their a coco hydro outdoor on IC?

-edit- ah right in front of me, bonecarver's like pipeline said

I guess I was thinking of something just like that, with two of those buckets and the rez just below it. I was thinknig about the bio-buckets too, I think that'd be my best option for outside. I don't want to do a drip or anything, I'd like a more hands free system (Unless I'm thinking the wrong thing about drip systems.)

Did you think on this anymore? Curious as to where you go with it. Drip can definitely be hands off. Rez, pump, line, drip emitter; cheap and easy, put it on a timer.
