should i use male or female for specific breeding?

Ok, lets say i have a big bud female and a sour diesel male and my goal is to have big buds with a diesel high. Is there a difference when breeding as to which one is male/female? Im thinking maybe the female will have a bigger influence than the father.

Normally the female will provide the taste and flavor you are looking for. The male is in the background and provides the power and strength and potency to the hybrid.

I believe it's an absolute shit shoot, with plant breeding the only way to form any sort of predictability is thru trial and error.

I do think looking at traits on a case by case basis can lend to some sort of prediction.

Look at each strain, see which traits are shared by 2 parental strains then there should be a higher probability of those being passed on.

In this case large yield is a trait of both strains.

With plants each individual will be different based on the pheno, so if you ran enough plants it would be possible to find what you are looking for.

Now increasing the frequency of that combination of traits that could take work.

depends also how stable your strains are !! very stable lines are reasonably predictable . start throwing hybrids together the fun starts . :)

The question I've always ponder is this...

In fem crosses. I.e. fem x fem. Does it make a difference if you reverse one or the other?

I have heard many people/breeders say use a male for this or that reason, or use a female for this or that reason, but I do not think they know what they are talking about.
Are you sure about this? How do you know what a male can contribute unless you take your males and transform them to Female to smoke or analyze them? I have many many many reciprocal crosses, using for example the Haze male X female Thai and then female Haze X male Thai, I see very little differences at all. What is more important is that the males or the females are elite selections that have the ability to give progeny that express the traits you are looking for. Males can be lousy examples of a variety or a elite example, it is easier to tell with females they are elite.
I have used males of my most consistent lines in the hopes that the male used is not a loser, or do a lot of progeny testing to help you find really top males of a given variety. I also transform my males to female to get a better idea what they can be expected to give to progeny.
BTW taste and flavor from the terpenes is normally half way between the two populations regardless if male or female used or even if two females one transformed to male are used as in the case of all female seeds, I see no differences except in sex. Even if you use a male transformed to female to make seeds with a real male or with another female transformed to make pollen, the only differences are sex as all females seeds made with a transformed female for pollen times a real female just do not have a Y. A male transformed to female still has XY it is just not expressed at the time of flowering but it will have the XY for progeny. In fact you can get YY if you use a transformed male to a female and pollinate that with a normal male. 25% YY, 25% XX and 50% XY If the YY are all viable, maybe they are not?

Is it true that the smaller and longer flowering males are more desirable than the monster males that flower quickly? I have heard that the larger faster flowering males make hempier plants as in doesn't get you high huge floppy male hemp plant? thanks

Hay sam. Thanks for chatting

It seems even in female crosses XX x XX can still make male plants in progeny . ...have you thought much what the difference is between males from XX x XY lines and males from XX x XX lines

I love XX x XX lines simply because it takes the guess work out of finding elite parents.

I dry and at least partially cure a few joints of every male. While not as defined as females, smoke enough males from a particular variety and you will find (hopefully) the ones that resemble the smoke you are looking for. My breeding experience is limited but I know both males and females can contribute to almost any trait. Also. Breeding for yield frequently means breeding away from quality smoke. I understand the desire for high yielding plants. There is just so many watered down, weak strains available. I'd choose for amazing smoke.

Dominate and recessive genes. Its identifying your target plant traits in subsequent crosses. SD's best traits, flavor seems to be recessive in crosses.

you have to just do it and see the results....you don't know what either will pass on till its done....I absolutely hate big Dud and wouldn't ever breed with it..it will water down the potency.....yeehaw
