If you look at the 1930's gun violence statistics the automatic weapons ban didn't slow down gun violence, the end of alcohol prohibition did.

General thought, but given some of the recent talk of Chicago and its status as a shithole, its worth considering that Chicago's crime rates may have a deeper root cause than what's getting pointed at currently.

Guns weren't the cause in the 30s anymore than they are today. Gangs formed then as they do now, they are more of a byproduct than a cause. I see it as large groups of really poor people that are willing to fight for whatever means to support themselves, often that's in whatever illicit market exists. Not much difference in the social impacts of selling bourbon 100 years ago vs crack or whatever now.

We need a top to bottom overhaul and it starts with wealthy distribution. Poverty is the single biggest driver of crime. The wealthy continue to buy connections and funnel dark money into politics. They store massive amounts of money in off shore accounts and use loopholes to withold insane amounts of cash.

The US will always struggle w poverty and always rack up debt if the wealthy are allowed to take more than they give. The richest companies and people hoard Trillions of dollars while the rest of us get ridiculed for eating avocado toast and buying iPhones.
