The workers at one of Amazon's warehouses wote agains a union that could help them get better security and wages.
Apparently amazon did a good job of "informing" their workers of why such a thing is bad..

Would love to hear your oppinions on this!

Best,

obvious (to me) that Amazon got it across to them that "if you unionize, we will re-locate, and take your jobs with us." most of the south is "right to work" country. worst thing that ever happened to actual workers. Tennessee is one of the worst offenders in this regard. company i work for has its home office in a northern unionized state. they get paid better, do not have night shifts, and already have medical cannabis. sounds like heaven...

Does anybody know the union that was trying to organize in Amazon?

In 1995 when I was in college at Grand Valley University in Michigan my roommate worked part time at Meijer and made $13.00 hr as a cashier. For those that don't know Fred Meijer was doing the same thing the Walton family was doing in regards to superstores. One big difference Fred paid his people very well. It was hard to get a job at Meijer because people stayed there and were well paid. Fred was one of the only people to turn down Sam Walton's phone calls. It took Walmart a long time to get a foothold in Michigan because Meijer back then was a cherished store for Michigander's.

Once Fred handed the company to his kids they raided profits, stagnated employee pay, and ran the company like Walmart. Meijer became a minimum wage job. They unionized and the union that came in didn't do shit in regards to helping people get more money. The union saw the employee's pay as source of income and basically stole money from minimum wage employee's with promises of a better future if the people just kept with the union. To this day the pay is low and the union is still there.

I'm not sure about the union trying to get into Amazon but I'm quite skeptical of unions anymore because the union heads see low wage employee's as a source of revenue instead of workers who need better wages and benefits.

There are 70,000 people who work at Meijer and each pays $8.00 a month to the union. Every month low wage employee's at Meijer send their union $560,000.00 in dues. That comes out to $6,720,000.00 a year. For what? Minimum wage?

I see good unions like the teacher's union, nurse's union's, and the auto unions. But these other unions that raid low wage workers disgust me. I hope this isn't the case with Amazon but if it is I don't see the vote not to unionize as a negative.

I think in Alabama, just because a place is unionized, that doesn't mean you have to be a union member to work there. They call that right to work. I read about Dunlop tire manufacturing leaving there because the workers went on strike. A lot of industry is moving to the north part of Alabama, and that may be why

Shooting yourself n the foot. No jobs now.

interesting info.
I wonder if the threat of moving the stores to another place if wages go up is not really just a threat. They cant really have all their factories in Guatemala..

Having a minimum wage job is not necessarily better than no job..

If it was better to not have a job ( than A minimum wage job) then, what’s to stop someone from improving their position by quitting the min wage job?

Last I checked the only real slaves we have in this country are residents of the department of corrections

Cause your companies headquarters are in the North where the pay is higher. A little like opening a factory in a 3rd world country.

I heard EXACTLY that sentiment, as a 1/2 joke 1/2 statement of truth, from an engineer who worked for a sub-contractor in Alabama.

Of course, maybe my behavior was not so intelligent. I was telling him everything he needed to know to do one of my jobs - in Alabama.

He was pretty candid about Alabama.

He just said, "Alamaba IS off-shore."

we've got companies down here that pay well, don't treat their employees as replaceable cogs, and do not worry about unions coming in, because their employees don't NEED a union. unions do not even TRY. but those companies cannot hire everyone that wants to work there...the auto unions damn near ran their members out of jobs forcing exorbitant salary demands; there is a reason Detroit aint what it used to be. we've got auto plants in southern/middle TN. non-union too. the VW plant management tried to GET a union voted in, workers said "fuck, no!" don't get me started on the Teamsters...

Why - what's up with the Teamsters ? does it involve the word "corrupt"

i was going to say "Mafia", but since the Mafia apparently don't really exist, i chose not to bring up their alleged existence, which was foisted onto the gullible public as an excuse to persecute ethnic Italian businessmen in large northern cities & gambling casinos in tourist trap cities. no, i did not use the word "corrupt" ..LOL!

Is Amazon acting as a Predator in this situation ?

It's interesting what skills an animal needs to survive a meeting with a predator.

I just adopted a neighbor's cat and she asked how he is doing.

I wish I could train the kitten so that he knows to CLOSE HIS EYES when he is outdoors & confronted with a predator, e.g. mountain lion.

He has one sort of older brother cat that might have learned this trick, and might be able to teach the new cat.

Not that that has much to do with Amazon.

Thought actually if the workers kidnapped Jeff Bezos and fed him to a mountain lion, I would say that they are sort of catching on.

Best,

Union organisers said 'the majority of workers are black - so the fight at the warehouse is tied to broader issues of civil rights and racial justice.
Or words to that effect. See last paragraph, here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56657595

Nah, just a few battles... the war(s) still rages on... and on... and on...
That IS typical southern thinking for sure. Can you imagine upholding the "ideals" of Dixie in 2021? No wonder the Southern states come in at the bottom year after year in education, literacy, health, wages, etc. Some might call it willful ignorance, but they just call it yee-haw! Dopes.
