    Klompen's evolving chaos - 2020 style

Hey everyone! I am getting my grow diary organized into one thread because I've got stuff all over this site now from this grow.

For those who don't know me, I'm Klompen and I am from the central Midwest in a non-legalized state. I've been smoking for a couple decades after finally discovering it's beauty in my early 20s. I've been toying with growing for a very long time now and sometimes have done it rather seriously when I have had the opportunity. I was on Overgrow back in the day as Klompen and I was MagicCannabus on here until I lost my login credentials at some point. The last couple years have not gone well from a growing standpoint and to greatly abbreviate a really long story we only really got housing again this year. We're really tired of trying to choose between medicine and money. Both my partner and I have very serious digestive and nervous system issues that cannabis helps with and so its not really optional for us.

I started with the intention of doing an entirely outdoor grow, but things evolved as time went by. In fact, had it not been for a generous friend sending some seeds, this grow wouldn't have happened at all. I had a modest collection of interesting seeds, and a large amount of seeds left over from my buddy's outdoor breeding project a few years back that were mid-grade at best. We've spent the last few years homeless though and the seeds have been everywhere from basements to storage units to really hot attics; leaving me with seeds that so far have had a 0% germ rate. I am really sad about the loss of a few of these genetics. I had a good selection of Hybrids from Hell seeds, and was most excited about germing Arnes Amnesiated SSSDD because I am a huge haze fan. I really love sativas and hazes in general, but ironically this time my grow is overwhelmingly filled with indica-leaning hybrids. Most of the seeds I got are not feminized and so we'll see which of these turns out to even be females and what I ultimately end up with in the cab..

Here's a pic of our best outdoor plant from last year. Its tiny and not that's strong, but it did have a rather pleasant high. Certainly not sufficient medicine...

Anyway, all that chatter aside; the grow is basically three projects in one space. The first one is the autoflowers, the second is the to-be-cloned plants, and the third are the bulk outdoor plants.

Here's the grow starting on May 18th:

So I got a bit impatient and started the grow before I actually have a chamber ready. So as I have been growing I have been building up a chamber around the pallet I have been using as a platform for it. We had a few early losses to rodents before I started securing my seeds and the majority of those little white cups didn't survive unfortunately.

Around the 23rd or May I took this pic of our Summer Breeze trifoliate. I know its unlikely to be a girl, but if it does turn out female I am pretty excited about it!

This above photos are the autoflower plants. We have 3 Double Grape Autos 1 Three Bears OG, and 1 Three Bears OG x Tooth Decay. This leaves me one seed for each in reserve as far as autoflowers go. I am really hoping to make seeds out of these but they're all feminized so I don't know yet how I am going to do that.

I replanted them to huge grow bags once it was pointed out to me that my autos weren't getting enough space and that my traditional method of constant transplant and topping would not be suitable for autos. The bags were supposed to end up around 6-7 gallons and accidentally ended up nearly 10.

So far my grow has the following strains that have germed successfully(hopefully I am remembering them all):

      Worthwhile photo strains:

      1 Summer Breeze
      2 Killer Orange
      2 Gooey 13
      1 J1 Hashplant
      1 Black Death
      1 Black Triangle
      2 Loud n' Proud
      1 Mountain Temple

      The autos:

      3 Double Grape Auto (Mephisto)
      1 Three Bears OG (Mephisto)
1 Three Bears OG x Tooth Decay (Mephisto)

      The outdoor beans:

36(approximate) "New Brick". I was going to run my buddy's outdoor strain for my riskier sites, but none of them would germ so I've had to resort to using seeds from a lightly-compressed brick that we're currently stuck smoking. I'm going to put out a massive number of them and partially use them to test sites to see if people leave it alone.

Here above is the grow space around the 1st of June/30th of May..

Here above is on June 3rd.

I have a bunch of 50W driverless COB chips and I am currently manufacturing a light that will utilize them. I still need to add the cooling features to it.

I also forgot to mention the mix I am using. It isn't a precise mix, but it should conform to the following ingredient list more or less:

2 parts coir (Eco Earth pet bedding)
            1 part perlite (Shultz)
1 part vermiculite (sold as insulation in a huge bag)
1 part worm castings (Wiggle Worm and Encap brands)
1 part mix of gypsum, lime, and random leftover bits of Espoma and Jobes organic fertilizers that were cluttering up my space.
0.5 parts silicon dioxide (kitty litter crystals)
0.5 parts Sphagnum Peat Moss(this is the most inconsistent ingredient).

Then I have cocoa mulch over the top, which I am honestly completely in love with now. It smells great and fills beautifully with molds. Its just important to keep it a bit back from the stem so it doesn't risk rotting it out. That's true of most mulch, but especially true of cocoa mulch.

This mix in many ways is a lighter-fed version of my old mix with some improvements. I found my mix in the old days was too rich. This time I am going to feed them as they need it, leaving just enough food in the mix to keep them from complaining. This is the first time I have ever planted cannabis though and found the plants just grow and aren't deficient in something or other. They don't even seem like they need magnesium. These are some seriously healthy little plants! Other than a couple early losses of seedlings, things have been good. Both Mountain Temple seedlings really struggled and one died, and we lost a few random others. It may have been some salt hiding in the coir or something. I am really not sure why they struggled so bad.

This is by far the nicest mix I have ever used. It doesn't clump or get particularly heavy, but it still holds a decent amount of water.

Thanks for stopping by! Guerilla grow for this year should be pretty huge and it should be fun to see what comes of these autos! Hopefully I'll be able to sex some of these photoperiod plants soon, and then get some cloning started. I'm strongly leaning toward air-layering, because that would get me some very large healthy clones potentially. Way back on Overgrow I came up with a water cloner design that was popular and still found a lot today, but in many ways air layering has advantages and I really want to do it on this grow if I can. In the past I used coir pucks, but this time I'll need to figure out some alternative. Maybe just plain coir bound in cheese cloth?

I currently don't plan to wait to sex the new brick seedlings before taking them out because I am worried that will really hurt their finished size. I also don't think I can fit too many more seedlings in my space and allow them to grow to any significant size. It does mean I will have to go out and sex the plants, but it also means they'll have more time to get big and well-rooted at the sites. I'm aiming to get about 100 of them out to at least 5 sites(so about 20 each area), and each site itself has 4-5 different promising areas to plant. Basically I want it so there's no more than 2-3 plants per spot. I am not a big believer in growing it in patches. Here in our area the wild hemp is so ubiquitous that most people would assume any cannabis they find is just ditch weed as long as its not planted in big neat patches. As long as there's no drought this year we'll be all good on letting them grow with minimal labor.

Any fears of them being way behind at this point seem unfounded. They range from about 3.5 inches tall to 5 inches and one of the two largest autos is 8 inches across and the other is 9. Growing much better now and roughly in the range they should be for not-even-four-week-old plants.

Here's a shot of the whole chamber. I added three 6W plant bulbs on each side of the chamber, adding another 36W of power. I currently have 303W of LED lights in there and the plants are really loving it.

I had to start over again with my light, but I am pretty happy with where its going! Having only hand tools to work with is limiting, but here's my COB fixture so far:

There's more to add to it, but it should be operational by some time today.

                        Full of lights. looks good.
Maybe you could consider to buy a big panel light for that size.

I have about 30 or so of the bag seed offspring that are actively growing. I think the first batch of them will be heading out to sites mid-to-late this week or maybe early next week.

I also moved around two of the Double Grape Autos in order to put the smaller one near the side because the larger one is crowding the side lights already. I watered them all yesterday and they're looking very happy. Unfortunately I lost my first fan leaf today and it was a big one. One of the biggest leaves off of Three Bears OG, but it was also shading out a side under it. I was trying to tuck it out of the way and snapped it right off. Its funny that in every other grow I have ever had, there have always been leaves lost by this point int he grow. This time the only leaf lost was just purely accidental.

My new 150W light that I built is performing very well so far. I have had it going 24/7 and its working like a champ. I've improved how it hangs a bit and will get pics when I can.

So far though they are just rocking it. I have seen some cupping at the leaf edges and perhaps some signs of too much nitrogen, but its all subtle stuff that doesn't appear to be slowing them down in any way. Fun times!
