R

I decided to try out a bio-bucket grow. I have to thank bigtoke of course, for answering all my questions.
Here are a few shots of it getting put together.

Damn Rule, you have been busy, haven't you? Looks like you're about to "kick it up a notch" (to quote Emeril)!! :biglaugh: Looking forward to seeing this baby fly! BTW, I might be able to fill some of those vacancies here pretty soon. My first attempt at cloning, while it looked pretty shaky at first, may end up panning out after all. The next few days being critical, of course. However, if the ones that look like they're going to make it actually make it, then I will have more than I can use. I'll keep you posted! Your new setup looks great, my brotha!

bucket boy, thanx for dropping in and gl on yours.

big toke, thanks bro. i have a question for you too. do you get any slime build up in your return hoses half way through your grow? the only other thing i have noticed some leaking from a bad sealing job, small drip, all fixed though.

rellikbuzz, hey bro! i have this grow up and running now. i have a white widow, a strawberry cough, 2 indicas (great bag seed), a grapefruit and an amnesia99. i realized something about cloning too, it sucks, LOL.

sleepy, thanx for stopping by.

i will take some pics of it all when i get some new batteries for the camera, this week sometime.

Supp bro always willing to pitch in what I know about the Bio-System, the slime is probable due to several deferent reasons, it could be something very simple and no effect on the outcome of your plants or it could be a for warning of something far worse!! Here are a few things for you to think about:
  1. let’s start off with water chemistry, I remember you telling me that you used R/O water treat meant to soften the water, do you know how your R/O System softens the water? Does your system say RO/DI on it any were? Just asking every method will have a different outcome and will change the effect of everything else………..you showed me a photo of that slime and form what I could till {guessing} it looked like high levels of sodium in the water to me; the average home owner doesn’t own a commercial R/O System that is capable enough to put out high enough levels of sodium to harm plants but will cause a little foaming, this is to be expected with R/O Systems and is not harmful to your plants in low levels but on the other hand your plants will be more prone to respond to tap-water than R/O Water; it takes very little water movement to cerate foam with soft-water than hard-water, most likely you will get better results from tap-water than R/O water but it’s your call I’m here just to give advice, that’s all.
  2. Another thing is avoiding dead spots in your Bio-System is critical when it come to system health, I noticed that your Bio-Tubs were at the same height as your reservoir? I would recommend that your put your Bio-Tubs on some sort of risers, about 6” to 8” off the floor should work great.
  3. Another things is, I would shorten those hoses down some what to were they don’t have as much slack in them so that you get the proper drainage and to avoid dead spots: they should never be laying on the floor!! However it is possible that your getting more foam then expected because of those hose; let me explain, as the soft-water travels down those ribbed hoses there creating a certain amount of suds.
  4. I would also check to see if each Bio-Tub is getting the proper supply/exchange demand that they should be getting……{minimum of seven times an hour}. if your not getting at lest that amount then I suggest that you add extra air to the tubs.

Hey HOG. I will count you in too, lol.

BT, I have an ion exchange chamber, which removes sodium. I was just asking cuz of my other grow, A99 grow. The plants are in the dwc/bio setup and there is no place for the good bacteria to grow, just the roots are hanging in the water. I was just asking cuz my ph got too high and the slime built up, I flushed it already and everything is optimum on that grow now.
This grow is going fine so far, all tubs are getting the same amount of flow, I do not know how fast the water exchange is though. How can I tell? I have about 20 gallons in the rez and about 24 in the tubs with a 895 gph pump.

Ahhhhh , so this is what you've been up too
i dont use bio buckets, but i'm down for the ride on this one too bro , looks like a sweet setup .

talk with ya soon

Peace

I’ve always looked at it this way, if the slime is white then OK if the slime is any other color then bad, I have seen the foam in reservoirs turn brown and even green with a funky smell to them so if you get something like this going on it’s time to flush and start over!! If this happens take a hard look at your design and see what can be improved upon.

Ion exchange chamber is great……….looks like you’ve got 8” net-pots that’s great to………..8, 24 gallon Bio-Tubs with only 895 gph pump Wow not so good imo, if I done the math correctly that size pump should only be used to grow only two of those Bio-Tub’s not 8, look at it this way; your not exchanging a five gallon bucket your exchanging a 24 gallon tub!! Whole new ball game!! In doing some sleeping on this last night I begin to realize something that the average minimum exchange rate does not apply in your case because your not exchanging five-gallons your exchanging 24-gallons, if I were you I would be calculating my pump sizing by time and length also, (how much time that it takes to pump that many gallons over the length that your going, most pumps are only rated to pump what they say on the label at a certain length’s………it looks like in your case that is about eight to ten feet, I would be thinking about that also.) if it were me I would bump that pump size up to like 9-times an hour, no less than 8 and I would get a pump size of like 1920 gph for your type of system but that’s just me, I would even go higher than that but using those hoses over that type of length’s would be a little frightening to me.

big toke, you misunderstood, i have a res with 20 gallons and 24 gallons in all the tubs total. about 4 gallons per tub. all the hoses are 6 feet long. does that sound better my brother? LOL

Hey OH.
The strawberry cough and the amnesia 99 are cuttings. The rest of the plants are from seed, I am also going to be adding another cutting or two.

Hey Rule, did you get the brown slime problem fixed? I saw where BigToke said to not add Piranha to that kind of system. Certainly could have been the problem. He cautioned against adding tap water because of the chlorine but if you have another container big enough to fill your res with, you could let it set for 24-48 hours BEFORE adding it to the res after you flush. The chlorine should have dissipated by then.

BTW, are you saving room for those new cuttings?!? :canabis: :friends:
