The following excerpts from SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's essay
written on the occasion of his 70th birthday. (he will be 80 this Jan 2.)

Just a month before my 30th birthday, I made the following entry in
my beloved diary: "I have no life apart from working, advancing and
living with all my might alongside second Soka Gakkai president Josei
Toda. I have come to realize that I am who I am because of my
mentor."

So sickly was I that the doctors told me my diary says nothing about
what happens after 60 probably wouldn't live to 30. My mentor, Josei
Toda, showed more concern for me than anyone. He continued to guide
and encourage me with compassion and strictness. I spent my days and
nights in an exacting, unceasing struggle to propagate Nichiren
Buddhism.

When my strength was sapped by ill health and exhaustion, Mr. Toda
said to me: "You are waging a battle against the three obstacles and
four devils. Take all your pain and suffering directly to the
Gohonzon, and fight to overcome every obstacle."

He also told me, "Live your life and forge your faith in such a way
that you can meet death with dignity and composure whenever it should
come."His voice - the voice of a strict yet loving father - pierced
the very depths of my being. On another occasion, Mr. Toda said to
me: "I will give you my life! Live, in my stead, live long!"

My mentor breathed this life into me, and I triumphed over my fate,
over being hounded by the demons of illness - and I reached the age
of 30. Exalted, I recorded in my diary how I had spent each decade of
my life and what my goals were for the decades ahead.

To the age of 10: Growing up the son of a humble seaweed harvester.

To the age of 20: Self-awakening and struggling against illness.

To the age of 30: Studying and practicing Buddhism and making earnest
efforts to defeat the demons of illness.

To the age of 40: Perfecting my study and practice of Nichiren
Daishonin's teachings.

To the age of 50: Making a clear statement in society.

To the age of 60: Completing the foundation for the kosen-rufu
movement in Japan.

But my diary says nothing about what happens after 60. I never
thought I would live beyond that age.

I am convinced that I have lived to see this 70th year because Mr.
Toda shared a portion of his life force with me.

If I were to set down what I have accomplished from age 60 to the
present, along with what I envisage for the decade ahead, it would
read as follows:

To the age of 70: Establishing the principles of a new humanism.

To the age of 80: Completing the foundation for worldwide kosen-rufu.

From that point on, in accord with the Mystic Law and the undying,
unaging nature of life expounded in Buddhism, I am determined to take
the lead in kosen-rufu throughout eternity.

An ancient Chinese maxim urges, "Renew yourself each day." I vow with
the firmest determination to exert myself "bravely and vigorously"
again this year (see The Lotus Sutra, p.23).

By meeting other people
we can do our human revolution.
By engaging people in dialogue
we are able to promote kosen-rufu.
These vitally important actions, using our wisdom and courage,
will help guide others towards attaining true happiness.
And its because we are doing such activities that we will most definitely be assisted and supported
by the Buddhist gods, the protective functions of the universe.

Always remember....

Always remember....

"In the next life you should use this sword as your staff. The Lotus Sutra is the staff that helps all the Buddhas of the three existences as they set their minds on enlightenment. However, you should rely upon Nichiren as your staff and pillar. When one uses a staff, he will not fall on treacherous mountain paths or rough roads, and when led by the hand, he will never stumble."

"To hope to attain Buddhahood without speaking out against slander is as futile as trying to find water in the midst of fire or fire in the midst of water. No matter how sincerely one believes in the Lotus Sutra, if one is guilty of failing to rebuke slander of the Law, one will surely fall into hell, just a single crab leg will ruin a thousand pots of lacquer. This is the meaning of the passage in the sutra, "Because the poison has penetrated deeply and their minds no longer function as before."

"There is no way that our prayers will not be answered. Whatever may happen, there is no way that we will be defeated. This is the essence of faith. As such, we have nothing to worry about. As long as we persevere in our faith in the Mystic Law, in chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and in our efforts to translate Buddhism into action, we will never reach a deadlock that we cannot breakthrough."

Thank you for all the birthday wishes!

Skegs, first of all I think it is significant that DG is our Sister--a fellow Bodhisattva of the Earth. I don't worry because I know Gypsy and I know how careful he is with where the servers are located, and that they aren't recording any IP addys as people log on. I don't talk about events in my personal life nearly as much as I could, for security reasons. From the outside looking in, maybe someone could figure you out, but not by getting inside. I really don't worry about that.

At any rate, all is well here on this end! We had guests in from Europe that have required entertaining and a friend is staying with us who uses the bandwidth so I can't get online. I am trying to be cool but it makes posting spontaneously an impossibility.

This last thing was a nasty bug! We are still coughing and now the wife is in bed and not feeling well today! But we take good care of each other and it is nice to curl up in bed in each others arms and have a snooze.

"Earthly desires are enlightenment and the sufferings of birth and death are nirvana." I feel like I'm living it! Thank you to all of my dear friends! Nam-myoho-renge-kyo!

My deepest love and respect,

Thomas

Nichiren Buddhism is like the sun
that breaks through the darkness.*
No matter what kind of problems we might be facing now,
we can definitely overcome them by practising
the Buddhist principle of 'Changing Poison into Medicine.'**
Positively and optimistically,
let's take on every challenge and conquer all obstacles!

Daisaku Ikeda

"... a lantern lighting up a place that has been dark for a hundred, a thousand, or ten thousand years." ("The One Essential Phrase" - WND, Vol., page 923)

"To lead the people to enlightenment, the Daishonin established the correct teaching of the Latter Day as the Buddhism of the sun. The Daishonin's Buddhism is a religion of transformation that can illuminate even the deepest darkness with the light of the Mystic Law. It can change people and society who, on account of the poisons of slander and ignorance, areunwittingly sliding ever towards evil, enabling them instead to enter a powerful ascending current that will lead them in a continually positive and beneficial direction." "Of course, during the year-end holidays, it's nice to take some time to rest and recharge our batteries, but the important thing is to keep steadily climbing the worthwhile path of self-improvement throughout our lives.

"Russian literary giant Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) quotes American writer Henry David Thoreau (1817-62) as saying: 'The biggest happiness is when at the end of the year you feel better than at the beginning.' These words also resonate with the Gakkai lifestyle. As we progress in our individual human revolutions, we come to savour ever-greater happiness in our lives with each passing year.

"Let's set forth into the new year with fresh resolve--something that Mr. Toda stressed as vitally important."

The Daishonin states,
"Nichiren's disciples cannot accomplish anything
if they are cowardly."*
Take heart, be brave
and be even more courageous!

Let's live out our lives boldly and with conviction!
