              "Be unafraid!
              The “Law of the lotus”[1]
will enable you to overcome all adversity
and enjoyably attain the inner riches
of a lofty state of life.

"Life goes by in a flash, and the speed of the days and months passing seems to accelerate as one ages. Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'Life is limited; we must not begrudge it. What we should ultimately aspire to is the Buddha land' (WND-1, 214). Let us live out our lives dedicated to the great vow of kosen-rufu, valuing and appreciating each day, with the spirit that we are advancing together with the Daishonin.

"We all have various obstacles that we must overcome day after day and month after month. No matter how daunting the challenges we face, with our own daimoku and the support and encouragement of our fellow members, we strive valiantly to surmount them. Indeed, we are confident that we can do so without fail.

"In our dialogue, the eminent British historian Arnold J. Toynbee (1889–1975) said to me: 'We must not be defeatist, passive or aloof in our reaction to the current evils that threaten mankind’s survival.'1]

"We are all Bodhisattvas of the Earth. We were born into this world in accord with our vow to contribute to the happiness of humanity. As such, we must not be indifferent to people and events around us or what is happening in society at large. If we were to live with such disinterest, we would no longer be bodhisattvas."

"When a single champion for kosen-rufu stands up, the fire of their spirit ignites the hearts of one person after another until it brightly illuminates the darkness with its glow. Stand up as an individual! Everything starts from just one person; everything starts from oneself.

"As the great Russian author Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910) said: 'A flame can only give light and warmth to its surroundings if it burns brightly itself.'[1]"

"The unity of 'many in body, one in mind' doesn’t impose restrictions on the individuality of each person. Everyone is free to be who they are, demonstrating their own unique personality, joining with others in a dance of mission for the sake of kosen-rufu. That’s the unity of 'many in body, one in mind.'

"In contrast, 'many in body, many in mind' produces chaos, while 'one in body, one in mind' produces totalitarianism. 'Many in body, one in mind,' however, is different from either of these two. Each person strives freely for kosen-rufu in their own unique way—just as the cherry, plum, peach, and damson all bloom beautifully in the way that is true to themselves.

"It’s like the stones in an old Japanese castle wall. Each has its own unique shape, and by combining those different shapes so that they all complement each other, an unshakable structure is built. That’s what makes the wall strong and beautiful.

"Mr. Toda said that we must build a citadel of capable people. In the citadel of kosen-rufu, no one is unimportant or unnecessary. Everyone is a precious, talented individual. Every single person is indispensable. A great, indestructible citadel of kosen-rufu is built by sincerely valuing and combining the talents and gifts of each person."

Let's try to read the Gosho daily, even if only a single passage! The wisdom of Buddhism is like the sun of hope that nourishes our lives. Having a seeking mind is what leads to victory.
