Hi friends! :smoke:

Here we are once again. As I've already finished my first grow diary with autoflowering strains I'm starting another one with SAD Auto and Speed Devil (#1 and #2). As the goal of this grow is a bit different, maybe the diary will not be so interesting to you, but well, in the end of this post I leave you the info about the goals so you can get an idea, hehehehe, because if you know the goals it will be a bit interesting, obviously.

:|Grow Details|:

  • Closet: Homebox XS (60cm x 60cm x 120cm / 2ft x 2ft x 4ft)
  • Ventilation: Extractor RVK 100 A1 (160m3/h) and 2 Sunon (one blowing air against the lamp and the other against the plants)
  • Light: 36wCFL for the first 8 days, HPS70w from day 8 to day 20 and HPS400w from day 20 to harvest
  • Containers: 4 pots of 200ml for the first 8 days, 4 pots of 3 litres from day 8 to day 20 and 2 pots of 18 litres + 2 pots of 11 litres for flowering (from day 21 to harvest)
  • Soil: For vegetative Canna Professional and for flowering Canna Professional Plus
  • Ferts: GuanoKalong Liquid Guano, Canna BioVega, Canna BioFlores and Canna BioBoost
  • Against plagues: Neem as preventive and Rotenona to fight them, if needed

picture.php

  • 18h - 24h: 1 Speed Devil #2 sprouted
  • 24h - 36h: 1 Speed Devil #2 and 1 SAD Auto sprouted
  • 36h - 48h: All sprouted > 2 SAD Auto, 1 Speed Devil #1 and 1 Speed Devil #2

:|Goals|:

  • 1 - Manage to get a good SAD Auto and a good Speed Devil #2 to make fotos of plants with an even better production than what I'm used to get with 7 litre pots. Less plants but more productive. The total final production will obviously be inferior... but superior in terms of production per plant;

  • 2 - Compare the production of an autoflowering grown with 10 litres of soil with the production of a plant of the same variety grown with the same grow parameters but with 15 litres of soil. This will be done with the two SAD Auto, with which I expect to obtain 2 homogenous plants (which is not always easy when growing from seed) being the production of the 2 plants the only difference;

  • 3 - Compare the genetics of Speed Devil #1 with the genetics from Speed Devil #2. One will be flowered with 10 litres of soil and the other with 15 litres but I guess we will see some differences;

  • 4 - Observe if with a 70wHPS lamp very close to the plants in the vegetative phase the plants stay shorter than in my previous grow and see how this will (or will not) influence the final production.

Once the seeds are in the soil I will leave the plants with a friend for a week, so next update will only be at day 8 or something like that. After that I will update every 5 days or even more often than that.

So, that's it for today, hope you enjoy this diary and the other I'm starting right now with the Snow Fruit micro scrog ;)

Keep it high, sweet regards,

Hi Costello! Thanks for your visit, hope you enjoy this diary ;)

Yep, sounds like a little too much, doesn't it? Hehehe... that's why I'm trying this, to see if it makes any difference by using 18 litre pots or if the plants produce the same as with 11 litre pots. Nice to know you are also curious about it, keep passing by,

Sweet regards,

Hi mates! :smoky:

Well, this may be one of the poorest updates, hehehe, they are just 5-10cm far away from the lamp which leaves no space for good pictures. But well, in the next update I'll take them out of the mini closet to transplant them to the final pots so you'll be able to see some better pics. Plants keep growing well, almost with no stretch at all being so close to the HPS lamp, which makes the internodal space to be very short. I remind you that I'm testing with the first 20 days since germination like this, always very near to the lamp, to confirm that they stay short but very productive.

Well, I know you're curious, so let me post a pic of the closets I'm runing right now...

picture.php

Homebox XS (60x60x120cm = 0,36m2) now with the 4 plants of this thread.

1 Homebox Mini (30x30x60cm = 0,09m2) now with the Snow Fruit micro SCROG.

1 Homebox Mini (30x30x60cm = 0,09m2) used to veg seedlings and/or to keep mothers and vegg clones a bit. Now I have one mother of Mohan Ram and a Cream47 seedling in there.

Slightly more than half a square meter (0,54m2) that allow me to get enough flowers for personal use while it also allows for sharing some beautiful diaries with you guys over here ;)

Sweet smokes!

Why did you start them in such small pots??

IME starting autos in the largest pot from day 1 will allow you to max out your yield....

Starting in such small pots just stunts your plants and never allows them to reach full potential...

Hello buddy! :tiphat:

Thanks for your visit and comment, really nice that you bring this subject to light, hehehe. I completly agree with you and I always advice everyone that buys our autos to do right as you say. Overall it's the best and easiest way to do it.

So, if I have the same opinion as you, you might want to know why I do it differently... :D Let me try to explain...

With autos the grower has no time to make mistakes. The autoflowering varieties can't wait. If you're growing a non-auto and at day 25 the plant is too small to change to 12/12, you can wait for a couple of weeks more and than you change to 12/12. With autos you can't do this because the plants will start flowering no matter the hours of light they get. So, if at day 25 you have a small plant, she will start flowering anyway. That's why it is better to germinate directly in the final pots, so the grower avoids the risk of failing to transplant in the right timing.

On the other hand, if the grower is experienced and knows exactely the right time to transplant, I think it is more positive to go from a smaller pot, to a medium pot and than to the final pot. If it is done in the right timing* it is better for the development of the plants, in my opinion. If you germinate directly in the final pot you also have to be careful about other issues. You can't have seedlings in a 10 litre pot and water with 1 litre of water. If you do this the soil will remain moisty for several days, because the little plant doesn't have roots big enough to achieve all the water present on the soil and having a moisty soil for several days is not good for the plants development. One has to water with just some 100ml of water to start and then 200ml, and so on, a bit more every time. But even like this, roots will go straight down to the bottom of the pot, not taking advantage of all the soil available near the "walls" of the pot. By transplanting from one pot to another, they can use all that space and soil, but of course, it is very risky if the grower doesn't know the right timing to transplant or if he knows but he gets lazy and leaves it for another day...

Just a bit like with the non-autos. As you know, with non-autos it is advised to do several transplants and there is a reason for it. With the autos the reasons are the same but plants don't wait so it is risky to follow this procedure and that's why me and many other growers advice other growers to germinate directly in the final pot. Because chances of failure are reduced.

*the right timing to transplant would be something like that:

  • 300ml pots from gemination to day 8
  • 3 litre pots from day 8 to day 18
  • Final pots from day 18 to harvest

I did exactely like this in my previous autoflowering varieties grow and plants didn't get underdeveloped, in my opinion...

...but you can see for yourself: https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=4273000&postcount=71

Thanks again for talking about this subject. I sometimes just post pics and nothing else, so having people interested in discussing some ideas is always good for this diaries ;)

Keep it sweet, kind regards,

Hey buddys! :tiphat:

Day 28 since germination and they're still growing. A few signs of flowering already... In the next update I'll try to post some pistil pictures, hehehe. They're still growing more to the sides than up, plants are real bushes, they'll stay short but productive, I hope, as I like them ;) Some pics...

First the Sweet Afganis, in the first pic we have the plant that is in the 11l pot and in the second pic the one in the 15l pot...

Hi guys! What's up? :tiphat:

Another update... 3 days after we can see that the plants are stretching more to the sides than up. They will stretch a bit more but I don't want them tall, you should remember that one of the goals of this test grow is "Observe if with a 70wHPS lamp very close to the plants in the vegetative phase the plants stay shorter than in my previous grow and see how this will (or will not) influence the final production."

Well, we start with the SAD Auto. First pic is the one in an eleven litre pot and second pic is the SAD with fifteen litres of soil...

Speed Devils are growing really very well, with health and vigour. Their appearance is a bit strange for their foliar structure, they look like devils, hehe. First pic is the plant with 15 litres of soil and second pic is the one with 11 litres...

Hi mates! Thanks StRa! :thank you:

They are beautiful, growing well and with many branches. The leaves are already getting a bit yellow, too much for this flowering phase, but I'm not going to worry about that for now. I'll keep feeding them with a bit of bloom fert and a bit of blooming stimulator (BioBoost) but nothing else.

Some SAD Auto fotos to start...

No pics of Speed Devil #1, but you can see her in this 2 last pics, in the left in the first line. She's the tallest and also the less beautiful from among the 4, heeheh, but I'm expecting that the appearance will not influence production, because she is with some strong branches, capable of sustaining some large buds.

Soon I'll let you know more ;) Keep it sweet! :peppermintstick:
