An organizer for a marijuana-related convention in Las Vegas said he was "ambushed" when he called for a Jan. 27 meeting with law enforcement officers and Mandalay Bay officials to discuss security concerns for his March event.

He walked into a room of more than 100 Metropolitan Police Department officers, county sheriffs, undercover vice cops, surveillance and security staff from Mandalay Bay, gaming control and alcohol bureau officers.

"I felt ambushed, like Gen. Custer surrounded by Indians," Lou Woznicki of Los Angeles-based Skunk Runner Media said Friday. "It was unbelievable."

Mandalay Bay notified him the next day that the convention, Cannapalooza, scheduled for March 19-21, had been canceled. It was billed as the "largest head shop on the planet," a 50,000-square-foot marketplace for all things related to marijuana culture, from hand-blown glassware to hemp clothing and cosmetics.

Woznicki said the event was expected to draw 50,000 people and would have been good for the Las Vegas economy, especially in light of disparaging remarks from President Barack Obama about leisure and business travel to Las Vegas.

The goal was to create a "fun, safe, educational event," he said. In addition to exhibitors, guest speakers would be addressing legalization, decriminalization and medical benefits of marijuana, along with home garden technology and trends.
"I called the meeting because I wanted them to see the name and face behind the show and to assure them that I'm on board with crowd control and keeping things in order," the promoter said. "We'd hire extra security and we'd like to have Vegas law enforcement involved.

"When I walked into that room, I was amazed and shocked at the number of people. I asked, 'What are these people so afraid of?' "

Those who had registered for Cannapalooza called Mandalay Bay to inquire about the show's status and the return of their hotel room deposits. They were told organizers canceled the event, Woznicki said.

"For the record, we have never even remotely considered canceling," he said. "Our show, right from the beginning, had been carefully crafted and nurtured, and at the time we were terminated, we had amassed a huge and fervent following."
MGM Mirage spokeswoman Yvette Monet said company policy prohibits discussing details of convention business contracts.
Metropolitan Police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said narcotics officers attended the meeting to express their concerns about marijuana possession being illegal in Nevada, but it wasn't their decision to cancel the event. That decision was made by Mandalay Bay, she said.

Woznicki said he was "enthusiastically embraced" by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and major hotels such as Caesars Palace, Bally's and Paris Las Vegas when he first pitched the event. He chose Mandalay Bay because the preferred weekend date was available.

"When I talked to them on the phone in December, I sensed there was trouble brewing. I felt there was a negative vibe there," Woznicki said. "Even at the meeting, a Mandalay Bay security guy said, 'Pot smokers don't drink and gamble and that's where we make our money. It's bad for business.' "

Las Vegas saw a 24.6 percent decline in convention attendance in 2009 and a 14.8 percent decline in the number of conventions held, the convention and visitors authority reported.

Obama chastised banks last year for planning business meetings in Las Vegas after receiving federal bailout money. On Tuesday he slammed the city again, warning Americans, "You don't blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you're trying to save for college."

"Vegas needs the income," said Jaren Sena of Fresh Brewed Concepts, a Las Vegas-based company that was contracted in December to do advertising and marketing for Cannapalooza. "To cancel for fear of pot smokers ... I think the economy is so bad and here's a viable means to help the economy."

Marijuana is gaining mainstream acceptance for medical use and has become a political hot button in states with huge budget deficits such as California, where some 1,000 medical marijuana distribution outlets are operating.

Sena said he had already spent a "good chunk" on national advertising for Cannapalooza, including printing 250,000 fliers, marketing heavily in Denver; Salt Lake City; Phoenix; Albuquerque, N.M.; San Diego; Los Angeles; and Orange County, Calif.

Woznicki said he paid a $10,000 deposit when he signed the contract with Mandalay Bay in September and has invested about $250,000 in advertising and public relations for the event.

Even at the meeting, a Mandalay Bay security guy said, 'Pot smokers don't drink and gamble and that's where we make our money. It's bad for business.'
I hereby call upon all "Pot Smokers" to boycott Las Vegas!

You don't want our money? You can't have our money!

Let's show 'em what a pot smoker boycott can do...

That's a shame too, cause I thought Vegas has changed its cannabis tune since the time I lived there.

I remember the days when Vegas used to have huge billboards at the edge of town warning tourists that bringing drugs into Vegas would get them arrested. Hahahah...

They don't want tourists bringing drugs, so that the Vegas mafia could control all the supply...

Just like how they want you to DRINK and GAMBLE. Sorry, if you have any other reason to visit Vegas, they don't want you.

Re: Cities IN THE DESERT.
FUTURE WATER WARS will effect change. Could get ugly.

Yes, BOYCOTT... But, it is the Law Enforcement Officers are really the problem.... Does a BOYCOTTaffect them.??
Maybe not.

Looks what's going on with Subway keeping M. Phelps on... And Look at Starbucks getting reamed by millions of angry Smot-Pokers...!! WE CAN DO IT, Now. Money Talks, when the Country is Bankrupted by our "Leaders."

These Business Concerns are beginning to act accordingly. WE ARE EVERYWHERE...

But, we gotta let them know why.... Or else the lesson goes unlearned.

I'll boycott Mandalay Bay, for caving to the wishes of the police, not Las Vegas though. Of course the local popo don't want it there. All police everywhere would oppose this type of an event.

Seeing as this was an executive decision. Why not boycott all the properties that they own or have ownership interest in.
BTW, I called for a boycott of Mandalay Bay yesterday with the same article in the Cannabis Law and Legislation forum.

Go to Reno, Tahoe or some Indian casino if you must gamble.

Vegas is in a very precarious position right now, and the last thing they need is for ppl to find a NEW REASON not to visit. As if Obama's exhortation not to "blow your cash in Vegas", wasn't enough. So any kind of boycott will make news across the country and be very effective.

Vegas needs a lesson badly! I lived there a long time, and you would not believe the shit that goes down. I did computers for certain casino owners (their personal pcs) and I know how they think. It's all about the $$$ to them. Nothing else means anything.

If anything represents the OLD MENTALITY towards cannabis, it is Las Vegas. Because the entrenched gambling interests are hostile to anything that doesn't make them money. Cannabis is not what they want their people to be taking on a trip to Vegas. They would sooner provide you with speed or coke so you stay up all night gambling. But better still is booze cause then you lose track of your spending, make stupid decisions, and lose lots of money. It's all a scam.

So I think we need to boycott all of Vegas, not just one chain of casinos. No doubt it was the Vegas powers-that-be who turned down the event, not the Mandalay which is probably desperate to fill all those thousands of hotels rooms.

Much easier to boycott Vegas, than get picky about which hotel to stay at.

Vegas has a very serious water problem as was mentioned, so go GREEN and stay outta Vegas!

I don't know what this Lou guy was thinking trying to hold a marijuana convention in Las Vegas, or in Nevada period. Nevada is openly one of the most strict states on marijuana. Lou should have been smart and held it in LA or San Francisco--if he lost a lot of money that was just because of a poor decision in geographical planning. California is openly the most lenient on marijuana laws, this convention would have been a huge success and most likely could of become annual.

I was thinking the same thing, Vegas sucks for pot laws and every major city in the US has convention centers, Vegas just seems like the worst possible city to do this in. People would end up in jail for possession and I would never attend a weed centric event there. Just my 2 bits. But yeah F Vegas, gamble locally.

Skip,

Please can we just Boycott MGM Mirage?

I know it sounds like the LV pigs played a huge role in this, but boycotting the whole city won't teach them as well as boycotting MGM Mirage, Mandalay, CityCenter.

This way they can see Hard Rock and the Palms getting tons of stoner dollars and MGM Mirage left EMPTY.

Please consider this approach.

Peace, :joint:

Don't go to Reno and give money to MGM. Go to reno and check out Harrah's or other NON MGM places.

Peace, :joint:

PS. After seeing the early poll results I think the MGM boycott would be better. If 50% of ICmagers don't know if they'll boycott no way we can get traction. There was 94% ready to boycott Starbucks.

Just curious, but where in the US has such an event taken place? In a convention-type setting? don't think it has to date...? Sure, been to several festivals organized on private property, but...

The only reason I raise this is that I just don't see such an event taking place anywhere w/o a lot of heat. So yeah, when the leo (coming from their entrenched position of the WOD) hears about such a gathering of "illegal" stoners... they will show concern. So they went to MB & they caved to the heat... basically said, we don't want to screw with all of this, we originally thought it was a trade show, not a head fest... which is how the cops likely portrayed it to the MB.

I'm not defending, just trying to see how such a cancellation could very reasonably happen. Not saying it is correct, just understandable. Spent my entire life under the WOD... does this really surprise anyone? It more or less surprises me to hear that someone would try to push this w/o expecting serious complications...

BTW, Metro has basically stated they don't give a shit about the MMj scene, just as long as no one really steps out of line. They've got bigger issues to deal with... it's vegas after all. AND, casinos know that a huge percentage of peeps get ripped at their rooms & then go down stairs all goofy, reeking of weed... and DO gamble... poorly, so they don't give a shit either as long as no one is toking in the hallways.

Peace.

These kinds of events have been taking place in L.A., SF and Oakland and they are HUGE! One happens in the spring I think at the L.A. Convention center. No problem with any authorities there.

So you see Vegas could just look at these events in L.A. & SF and realize they're not a load of trouble, but very successful events.

But NO!

Vegas JUST SAYS NO TO STONERS, so we must SAY NO TO VEGAS!

I can see where the Hard Rock is a big attraction to stoners, and I agree they shouldn't suffer, cause they're cooler than the casinos on the strip.

Yes, you are right to consider boycotting all MGM properties, but also consider this... It ain't just the MGM, Mirage or Mandalay bay with a bad attitude towards stoners. It's the whole city.

Funny thing is, when I lived there, I was pretty straight (had to be with my clients), and to survive I quickly realized one has to assume that EVERYONE in Vegas is on some kind of drug. It's the only way to make sense of all the crap that goes down there.

So just assume everyone in Vegas is on some kind of drug, but cannabis is far down the list... That needs to change, imo.

I've smoked the good stuff on the balconey's of many a nice strip night club ;) I don't know when you left LV but you would be amazed at the 100,000+ glass pieces available all over the city and MMJ packages being filled out for people at the hugest tattoo / head shop with 8 or so locations in town. The LV pigs are still uptight, but being a stoner is just as acceptable as being a VERY BELOVED alcoholic mayor ;)

Skip, it really has changed. I'd love to hear what Mayor Oscar Goodman has to say about the loss of thousands of hotel room nights?

Peace, :joint:
