CBD Over the counter in Pharmacies

In Australia we can now legally purchase CBD over the counter in Phamacies, although I don't think any products are available yet.
‘We know it works’: Cannabis oil firms chase approvals as over-the-counter sales are legalised

Low dose cannabis oil can be bought over the counter at pharmacies from Monday for the first time, but don’t expect to find any for at least six months as none has been approved for sale yet.

Manufacturers are working at a “lightning” rate to get products approved for sale in pharmacies, the former president of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, Kos Sclavos, said.

A worker on the first farm licenced in NSW to produce medicinal cannabis prunes a plant.

FreshLeaf Analytics, specialists in the Australian medicinal cannabis industry, said the first company to get its product on chemists’ shelves will have a significant advantage in a market estimated to exceed $200 million a year.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) announced in December that it would “down-schedule” some low dose cannabidiol (CBD) preparations of up to 150 mg a day to allow pharmacists to dispense this medicine without a prescription.

The Australian Medical Association opposed the proposal to sell cannabidiol over the counter. A spokesperson said it had not changed its position.

Why more people are turning to medicinal cannabis
Cannabidiol is an active ingredient in cannabis that doesn’t make a user high. A review by the World Health Organisation found it didn’t lead to drug abuse or dependence.

Clinical research has shown it can help reduce anxiety, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder and pain, said Dr Ben Jansen, the director and founder of Cannabis Doctors Australia.

Dr Jansen said his practice specialising in medicinal cannabis was passionate about CBD because it was life-changing for about a quarter of patients.

Far from being a “demon drug” as it was thought of in the past, he said, “we know it works, but we want to find out how well it works.”

He said it would take “at least two million dollars and the appropriate data before (a product) can be registered for use for distribution by a pharmacist.”

Contrary to stereotypes, the vast number of CBD users were middle-aged women who took the medicine for pain relief, such as inflammatory arthritis, he said.

FreshLeaf’s analysis of the TGA ruling said many products prescribed by medical practitioners - after gaining special approval because the drug is currently unapproved - will meet the criteria for sale over the counter.

“History suggests that the first movers among product companies will be the winners, with the first movers in the medicinal cannabis industry in Australia still dominating the industry today,” said Cassandra Hunt, managing Director of FreshLeaf.

Mr Sclavos, a pharmacist who has specialised in medicinal cannabis, said the decision to allow pharmacies to dispense cannabidiol without a prescription was a major move forward for a “whole cohort of patients”.

He had seen first-hand the “incredible improvement in the quality of life” that medical cannabis could deliver to a range of patients including epileptics.

Compared with other medicines, the response of each individual to CBD varies enormously among individuals, Mr Sclavos said. That meant that pharmacists will have a “bigger say” in adjusting the dose.

The TGA decision only applies to products that are on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).

To register a product, a company must demonstrate that the products are high quality, safe, and efficacious. This is a time-consuming process, said Freshleaf. Products may not appear on shelves until next year.

That didn't take long did it? Only about 60 years or so. Wont it be great to see all the corporates make a killing on the back of the people who did all the work and took all the risks? Standby for the next breakneck advancement... in 2050. Grateful for small mercies I suppose.

Change in Australia is glacial. Hard to believe that such a harmless substance like CBD has to jump through these hoops, and even when it's approved you can't buy it yet.

And the fucking AMA don't approve. :gday:

Personally I actually have several conditions that would benefit from CBD. Now if only I could actually buy some.

I recently went through the process of getting cbd oil prescribed for my back pain, it cost me $240 for the doctor visit (no medicare coverage) and would have cost another $240 for a months supply, for that price I can get 2 ounces of weed which does more for my back pain than cbd will as getting high takes my mind off the pain more than the cbd content does for pain relief.

I bet even in a years time when it becomes available it will cost at least $240 for a months supply which means I am still better off buying weed on the black market at $220 - $230 per ounce which lasts me a month.

Hopefully once it is available over the counter you will be able to import it without issue which should bring the price down.

Interesting. I would be eligible as well but have been turned off by stories like this about price. FMD, that's a lot. I take THC stuff for back and arthritis pain but I had a good experience overseas with straight CBD that changed my opinion of it.

Might have to grow some CBD gear or take the risk and import it.

This is been a country of ignoramuses for most of its existence. Sadly, this demographic is still (mostly) running things. Right now inparticular. Cant believe I've had endure this shitshow for over 50 years. We've gone backwards since the 70's. No question.
Never mind the 3000 plus people who die from overdose and adverse effects of pharmaceuticals every year. Believe in science? Only when it suits them.

i wonder what form it will come in... tincture ? capsules ? raw isolate... makes you wonder 150mg per day, ive been vaping that in a less then half a day. if a 1000mg is 1g, i dont think 150mg per day will be enough for some peoples daily needs if taking it as a medicine. IMO. just my 2 cents.

I've got to agree, I smoke a gram a day.

the isolate it self sells for around 10-20$ in the US ... it wouldnt come as a shock to find out that the chemists sell it for triple that amount over here when it comes as available.. also i highly doubt it will be available in crystaline or isolate, more likely in a tincture or some sort of capsule form , just a wild guess.

Meanwhile....grow your own CBD hemp hybrid for CBD capsules/tincture or blend nugs with your $240....WIN/WIN!

So months later and Australia is still waiting for CBD to be available at chemists. Meanwhile chemist shelves are stocked with many next to useless supplements. Fuck we are a shit country when it comes to this sort of thing. Anyway, I sourced some CBD oil from the black market, well more like grey market, as it was pretty easy. Paid a lot but it has helped with pain and anxiety. Actually has helped so much that I have ordered a CBD variety to grow myself with less than 1% THC. Never thought I would do that and going to be weird growing a plant that won't get me high, but CBD is quite expensive. Luckily there is a local seed bank that had some, because it's not easy getting seeds in from overseas anymore.
Fuck our useless government, the TGA, and AMA.

Of course they don't, it doesn't create customers (Rockefeller doctrine)
