Thatguy's Swamp Grow '08

OK, so I'm getting a very late start over here. I'm that guy at PG, and have had my thread going over there for a month or so.

But I believe that the more people I converse with, the more and better advice I can get, so I am starting another one here.

So to start off with, a description: My swamp is roughly 200 ft E/W by 1/4 miles N/S. It is more of a bog, as there are thousands of little islands that have 8 to 12 foot brush growing out of it. So my plan was to clear as little of the brush as possible, and plant in 10 gal grow bags since the dirt there is horribly acidic. I grew in 5 gal buckets last year, but my plants outgrew them before the middle of July.

I'm growing in 40%potting soil, 30% compost(/2 manure, 1/2 "forest"), 20% peat moss, and 10% perlite. I also added 12 fl oz GH rare earth(silica clay & leonardite), 12 tsp polymer crystals, and 8 tsp dolomitic lime per bag.

I now have 14 plants in the swamp. 7 bagseed, 3 Hindu Kush X White Widow, 3 DP Passion #1 and 1 DP Frisian Dew. I have 1 Passion#1 and 1 Frisian Dew to go.

These are the most recent photos I have, from the 18th.

These are the HKxWW, which don't want to branch out. Strange, since they are clones, and the mother had no problem doing it inside.

There is another one, but I guess I never took a pic.

These are the bagseed plants. No shots of the Passions or Frisian Dew's yet.

The reason that last one was leaning was that some of these thunderstorms we get here blew it almost completely over.

So that's the beginning of my outdoor thread. I'll have updates every week or so.

All the best,
TG

Hey man, I came over to your thread to help with the soil question you asked over in my thread.

What all did you put in your soil mix to start with???

HOVAH, thankfully I don't have to worry about that stuff. Only snakes I have to worry bout are rattlers, and they like rocks, so I'm safe. Snappers are real rare, so I'm not too worried. The deer and people were my biggest problem, and the swamp handled both of those well, I think.

BC, sorry I hadn't added that info yet. I was planning on including as much as possible, but I guess I was too when I wrote it.

So I went out there yesterday, and things are doing smashingly. I no longer really care about the odd signs my leaves are showing, as the plants are growing so fast it seems as if it doesn't matter.

Here are the 3 Passion #1's I put out last Saturday.

This is the Frisian Dew I put out last Sat.

I got one more Frisian in a bag yesterday before the rain started, and I have one more Passion to put in a bag later today. Then to move on to gathering water from the stream a quarter mile away, and store it in my 5 32 gal trash cans I have hidden under cover in the swamp. I'd use swamp water, but it REEKS of sulfur. I mean so bad I gagged when I smelled it.

These are the HKxWW. They were SO reluctant to branch.
If you can't tell, this one gets more light than the other two.

Gotta cut a few more branches for these two.

It's obvious to me that these bagseed plants don't need as much ferts. They're bushy, and growing real fast. I expect the ones in buckets to be root bound within a couple of weeks at the most.

Last year the roots actually split the bottom of 3 buckets and coiled up underneath. There was enough moisture on the surface of the ground I guess, because they didn't go into the ground.

So that's the update. All the best,
TG

the only thing I have to worry about in the swamps around here are deer flies, horse flies, mosquitoes and getting my feet wet
