DIY ghetto/"free" muffler/silencer
So I have 3 fans pushing a lot of air out, and i've grown tired of the noise.
Tonight i didn't feel like sleeping so i went and build 3 of these babies. So my ideas came from my vacuum cleaner exhaust, and my motorcycle exhaust...i kind of mixed both of them, and used stuff i had laying around in the garage. All you need is: ->duct tape (of course) ->knife ->some kind of mesh (i used a bottle for the third exhaust when i ran out of mesh, just did a shitload of holes in it so the air is absorbed) ->stapler ->cardboard from some crap you bought and kept the box ->toilet paper or some other paper that let's air through ->foam or something else so you dont spend all your toilet paper, should let air through too -> Total cost: dare i say 0$????Hehehe.. ok let's say 20-30$ if you don't have any of this stuff at home, but hey.. who doesn't? Here are the pics: This is the stuff i used. Cardboard, stapler, knife, mesh,p aper, foam. Roll up the mesh (tighter means less noise sound but more air sound, larger is the oposite, i got better results with tighter, like 3cms wide or so) Wrap lots of paper, and then foam, around the mesh Then take the cardboard and roll it around the stuff Staple it and do lots of holes in it so the air passes Wrap it around what you already had going Then wrap a lot of paper around it too. Okay that's it, here are the two finished "exhausts", one after duct taping and the other before. After that, line them up with your ducts, and...duct tape them in! Here's the end result, an awesome dual exhaust eheh: And you would NOT BELIEVE the HUGE difference this has made.. I hear almost no sound, i mean it makes as little sound as the computer does! The computer fan is louder in fact! I made a sample video before duct taping in the third exhaust, with the fan blowing full power. It's 16mb but if someone want's too check out the difference, even without the dimmer (fan at 100%) i'll try to put it somewhere. Hope you like it. ![]() p.s.: of course this is not good for people who want to put them inside near lamps where there is a fire hazard! be safe! Last edited by hedpi; 12-28-2007 at 10:45 AM.. |

So here's the video for the non-believers
![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEkDdVtnVzE Hey FreezerBoy, yeah well, if i had more space i would have made another division in the cab for the electrical stuff and the mufflers/filters crap, but anyone who does have, this is a valid option! But seriously, it's actually stealthier now that it doesnt sound like a turbine engine!!! Hehe |

What a difference indeed!!! Am I correct in thinking this is NOT odor control, and only sound control?

sweet little addition to all the wonderful diy stuff on here for sure! like the video...i'm a believer.
as to the above post, couldn't you make your own carbon filter to go along with those mufflers? I know I've seen something about this on here before... aha! probably something like this on IC somewhere, but this is a great CC scrubber that could easily be adapted to the above design...they are practically identical http://forums.mycotopia.net/cannabis...-scrubber.html (scroll down just a bit)

Yeah it's only sound, i don't have odor control! (yet?)
Yeah, no problem, you could do the first bit in carbon (the one after the mesh) or for easy replacement, you could get a strap, and make a cover in carbon cloth for the mufflers, like a lid. Links for odor control here at ICmag: http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=29402 http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=39506 http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?p=509470 http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=36061 (lol.. not quite..but..) http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=45196 http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=48949 http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=51843 (you can take this one, and make a cover for the exhausts) http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=63647 http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=62938 or something like this http://www.simplehuman.com/products/...on-filter.html Last edited by hedpi; 12-29-2007 at 02:42 AM.. |

Looks great man, looks like you saved a nice chunk of cash. I bet you were sure happy.
Any ideas on making one of these inline? I would love to make one of these for my future cabinet, but i want to have everything contained inside. I've seen duct mufflers, and my guess is that they are essencially just a section of tube with a lot of padding around the sides, so why not go DIY right? Great work man.

Well yeah you could do it inside, just get some of those adapters you usually get for the ducts, and you can do the filter right next to the fans, inside. I just don't like taking up the little space i have inside with ducts and fans and filters.. i mean even the lamps take up too much space!!
I'd probably make a separate division inside the cabinet, and put all of the electrical crap there, plus the fan(s) and filter(s) so it wouldn't bother the grow itself, i think the NGB cabinet has something like that, check it out here at the forum (on the DIY links thread). Yeah the mufflers you buy at the shops are just a perforated tube+padding+outside tube. If you have access to sheet metal and welding you could make it no problem, looking just like the stock stuff. |
