Hi,all -
I was wondering if any company designs their products for use with r.o.water - or do I need to add calcium + magnesium supplements?I'm using FloraNova grow w/superthrive for veg,and I have FloraNova bloom + Floralicious bloom additive.Do I need to add cal/mag or epsom salts?.

Yes there are companys with formulas for RO but not very many, as most is tap or hard water. Most likely you will need to add CAl-Mag, but check with the individual nutrient manufacturer.

MasterVaper... RO water is about 7.0 in ph and minimal ppm in total disolved solids. It's up to you to provide the rest. Your plants should tell you if you need to add magnesium... slight yellowing of leaves.
I use RO water with great success. My nutes are PBP, Liquid Karma, supplemented with a little Cal-Mag.
RO water should be just fine with any nutes out there.

I use Gh nutes with R.O. water. GH also makes a hardwater version that requies Cal-Mag. Good luck.

There are many nutrient brands that have a soft water formula ..i use ro and have had a few problems with trace mineral deficiency..but if you use a hydroponic nutrient with proper ratios of all macro secondary and trace minerals you should not have to add cal-mag to your solution...

I've seen mention of RO water here a lot. Being a newbie I don't know what that stands for... Please elaborate. I'm sure I'll feel like a dumb ass one this is explained.

This is my RO unit... there are 6 filtration stages and it will put out 110 gallons per day.
My water was bad out of the tap... PH 7.5 and PPM about 600ish
With the RO unit... those numbers are PH 7.0 and PPM of 12
This unit was from ebay and under $150.00 delivered to my door.

Metanaturals is an OMRI certified hydro-organic nutrient that is made to easily work with RO water. The calcium in the mix is in a seperate bottle, allowing you to easily tailor the mix to suit your needs.

so it just a standard 5mil/1tsp per gallon of RO water for calmag plus then from botanicare? should all the RO water that goes into my rez have this amount in it? or just at the start....

is cal mag really necessary when using flora nova + liquid karma in the r/o water? the lk has a lot of trace stuff in it. someone pls chime in if they use without.

Sorry I did not see this question till now.
The RO tank 2 1/2 gallon I believe fills in under an hour.
I have a splitter on my line... and run a line to another 55 gallon barrel with a float valve in it. I use this as a storage tank and not a feeding resevoir. I run 3 different resevoirs and to fill those... I will dip a 5 gallon bucket in the 55 gallon tank... and use that to hand fill the other resevoirs.
Hope this helps.

I use Cal/Mag in RO water and the plants need it...In fact they almost died without it...
I am using the AN organic line and it is great, but lacking in lots of Micro's and stuff.
Cal/Mag is like 15-20 a bottle...definatley needed in my opinion. I also use Earth Juice Micro at about 1/2 strength and my ladie move me for it.

howdy all, just thought i'd throw in my water/nute program. it might help someone. in my new home in a rural area the tap water varies from around 200 ppm to as high as 360 ppm. the water company can't or won't tell me why. this high ppm tap water was making it very difficult to control things. i was using way too much ph down in the form of phosphoric acid and it was causing other nutes to precipitate out of solution. i bought an ro filter. now water was 002 ppm. using pbp, lk, and cal-mag+ it straightened out pretty well but now ph kept plunging down into the 4-4.5 range. adding teaspoons of potassium hydroxide for ph up all the time. i called several nute companies we all know well and their techs basically said most nutes are designed for tap water in the 100 ppm range, which apparently is about the national average in the us. i now maintain a topping tank with a float valve into the main res. i check the tap water every time i fill the topping tank and have kept a worksheet on it for reference. i premix tap water and ro water in the correct ratio to produce about 100 ppm. it varies a little each time but by keeping notes you know that if the tap water is 225 ppm you will need to use 3 volumes of ro to 2 volumes of tap and so on. for each tap ppm range you have a slightly different mix. if it is anywhere between 90 and 110 ppm i leave it alone. what this did was let me eliminate the cal-mag+ and is buffering my ph nicely. now with pbp and lk i adjust ph down to 5.8 one time and then once more a week into bloom, if necessary. usually by this time i have added only about 50-60 ml ph down, which is not enough to screw up anything. the rest of the grow i just watch it float up and down from 5.5 to about 6.2. the girls love it.

"BUT LACKING IN LOTS OF MICROS AND STUFF" EXACTLY!!!! Thats why they sell all those pretty little bottles with the beutifull labels, to fill in the those MICRO voids that cost a whoooooooole lottta money, and ill say it again man those bottles are cool lookin, just make ya wanna fork over the piles of cash just for the damn bottle!!!!
but they make great nutes HHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!! !!!!!!!

RO Water = Water treated through use of a reverse osmosis system.
Having been a solid believer in chemical nutrients (GH). I have yet to make the jump to organics. I have patients claiming AN is best. Then others come and tell me CANNA's organic hydro nutes are better. Im going to run each one side by side LITERALLY. I am convinced that none of these "organic" nutes are going to produce nearly as good as the tried and tested GH.
CANNA is going to be the first contender as I have been constantly impressed with their nutrient line for coco.

I am on my first grow, and am using FloraNova and RO water that is at 1 ppm, along with liquid karma. I was not using Cal-Mag, and my plants suffered from it, showing deficiencies. I got some Cal-Mag, added to my res., and it fixed the problem.
This last res. change I did, I added a lot of FloraNova, and my EC was at 2.1 with just the FloraNova. So I barely added any liquid karma and cal-mag, then a couple days later, the plants were showing signs of leaf curl and yellowing. Added some more cal-mag yesterday, and they are already looking better.
So in short, I definetly think Cal-Mag is needed with RO water, at least in my case.

I am on my first grow, and am using FloraNova and RO water that is at 1 ppm, along with liquid karma. I was not using Cal-Mag, and my plants suffered from it, showing deficiencies.
Next time use a bit more pH up and keep it at 6.0 to 6.1 until the yellowing goes away. (around 21 to 30 days into flower, right?) Once the stretch has stopped and they've been putting on weight for a week, let it drop back down to 5.8 and they should be fine.
Have you ever run a grow without the Liquid Karma and Cal/Mag? I use only RO water and FNB at 8ml/gal during flower.

I am using advanced nutes, they have a very helpful site on nutrient schedules specific to amount of gallons or litres.I have read by some that keeping ppm to 800 is allthats required to achieve success most fert are wasted over 1200 ppm depending on starting e.c. of your water.
r/o water is definitely easier to drop p.h. as reg water here is hard even after running a hydro logic my p.h.is over 7.0 and 300 ppm. with r.o. it's 6.7 and 90 ppm.if I want to lower the ppm and not worry about p.h. i just add r/o/ as it mostlys assumes p.h. of water it's mixing with.
I had probs at first as wasnt using nutes correctly and water was too hot once i got correct schedules from advanced (went with light feeding)i had a lot healthier plants, root structures.
keeping res temps around low 70's and air temp around 75 helped perk things up.
I try to keep my p.h5.8 e.c. between 1and 2 anything over 2 or 1500 ppm makes me nervous for burning em.
advanced grow, micro, bloom are used in same quantities which takes care of cal mag.never more than1.5 to 2 fl ounces per 5 gal.
recently had few probs with powdery mildew on leaves so keep humidity below 50 percent.

I'm using House & Garden. It seems like its not so popular around here. I really like it though. Its made for RO and I have not had to use cal-mag with it yet. I do however use cal-mag on my soil plants. Which brings me to (and i know this is the wrong forum for this sorry guys) Does anyone have a soil nute to recommend for RO?
