Always though this is was really stupid. You spend all that time growing the plant throughout veg and flower, and the period where your buds will swell the most in the shortest amount of time, you cut down the light? The past few grows, I've changed my light cycle from 12/12 to 13 ON and 11 OFF for the last two weeks with very noticable results. Give them light the last two weeks, that's when they need it the most!

Interesting concept, However with only 7 posts can you back that up? No DR my man but, Lets see some proof!

The question I'd ask is - if your plant is growing outdoors, and at the end of September is growing well, under say, 11 hours light, and bud development is rapid, do you ask the sun to turn back up a bit to extend the flowering period?

At the end of October, the useful daylight will have dropped to less than ten hours. A few weeks later it will be down to about 7 or 8. The buds will be huge by that time, frost allowing. Now how did that happen, given the photoperiod is now something like 8/16? :chin:

I haven't noticed any drop in yield by switching to 10/14, but I do believe the plants finished off properly, and were ready to die when they did. The Flo I grew outdoors last year came down on Nov 1st, and it was barely getting more than three or four hours of sun by that point, but it still finished off.

Some strains need only 10 hours of dark to flower. Others need 11 or 12.
12 being about average for MOST strains... you'd do well to test your strains critical day length. If you have the time. 12 hours is just a good starting point,as most will flower under 12 hours darkness.

If you find a short dark cycle strain then you could run 10 off and 14 on to get a larger yield. You could hurry the finish time by a week or mabe 2.

Haven't tried this yet... but if you keep a plant in flower for 5 to 6 weeks and turn the lights back to 24/7 the buds will continue to ripen, and a new growth shoots will emerge from the tops... done correctly you could harvest the 1 set of buds while the 2nd is just going into 10/14. 2 harvests from 1 plant with out a TRUE reveg...2nd set of buds will be smaller but it's an interesting idea.

The reason we use 12/12 is thats what we have all been told and it works very well... but it is not hammered in stone. Ask any Indoor Sativa Grower.

my buddy has a strain that flowers at 14on/10off better than when on a 12/12 light cycle.
