View Full Version : Photo Posting Enabled!
THE INSTRUCTIONS HAVE BEEN UPDATED. The process is now much easier.
To include an image in yours posts, you must first post the image in the galleries then use the new links that appear to the left when you write your post (Upload Photos & Add Photo to Post).
The procedure is this:
1. You must first upload the photo to your gallery.
2. Then you can Add Photo to your post by clicking on the link - to the left of your forum posting box.
3. Select from the drop down list the image you want to post (you'll be presented with a thumbnail to make sure it's the one you want).
4. Highlight & copy (ctrl-c) then paste (ctrl-v) (or just Drag) the URL to the image.
That's it, your image should appear in the post.
NOTE: We now have an image posting FAQ! (http://www.icmag.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=3&categories=Photo+Posting)

My gallery allowed unlimited size pics and an unlimited amount of disk space so I went right to work but most are 200-400 kb.
When can we get posting big pics? BOG
I got in trouble over this once before at OG when I complained that reducing the 150 kb limit was not a good idea. They took my advice and now its over 1 mb.
Hi BOG, sorry about the limits, but while they might be a slight inconvenience for those with beautiful large images to display, they make a big difference to the performance of the site for everyone!
We all have to make sacrifices for the common good, and this is one of those things.
At first this site was setup by default to allow images to be mixed right in with the database of text. That is incredibly bad for a large site as this will soon become, so I stopped that. We have the image galleries instead, with a 250K filesize limit & 5MB total for registered members. Moderators have no limits at present.
But when images appear in threads we must restrict the size even more because how long it takes for a thread to load is dependent not only on the amount of text but far more upon the size of images included in the text. Any delays, especially for those with slow dialup affects everyone on the site as the server must keep those connections open longer until the download of the thread is complete.
Besides the load problem on the server, if you include large images in your posts it ruins the formatting of the page unless you have high resolution monitors in excess of 1024 to show the image & thread without having to scroll from side to side. Few people have that kind of resolution.
I realize this is a bit technical, but once you master the photo posting (cut and paste should be familiar to everyone using a computer), it should be a breeze.
Actually BOG, OG does not allow images over 100K in posts. Evidently they resize them upon upload because if you check the size of images in the posts you'll see they're not as big as what you uploaded.
I can probably program that too, but that is a LOT of custom programming and would have to wait until I can program a whole new process for uploading.
Since you need to resize your originals anyway, you might as well make 'em under 100K cause anything larger is pretty much lost on the Net or causes the problems mentioned above.

Well I reset my cam to about 70 kb pics but even though they are under the 600 pixel size limit I get that message anyways.
It is true that OG downsizes pics in posts automatically which allows people to waste bandwidth so I understand your reasoning.
I thought I had this figured out but I am sorry all I can upload is tiny thumbnails usually. What's up with this? BOG

It will be a ton of extra work but I can't just show thumbnails now can I? Maybe we could widen the limit just a bit? BOG

I think he's got it!
By god he's got it!
:)
I guess I should've mentioned that currently there is a limit of 600 width x 800 height. That is because larger than that will cause the image to go beyond the resolution of many screens.
I could raise it to 800 x 800 or so but that starts to get up to 100K.
BOGs photo above is 35K, about average for a posting. At that size it's quick loading and creates no problem.
I recommend cropping images too as that is another means to resize the image and zoom in on what's interesting or removing that which is not.
I realize many people are not pros at this, but these image editing skills pay off once you use them regularly.
It seems you guys got spoiled by OG's liberal image policy. But as you can see they have to deal with the same limits we do, but they do have a slick image posting routine (I salute the programmer!)
In fact one of their programmers once helped me solve a chronic problem on another site of mine over a year ago. So I have a high regard for what they have done over there and their talents. Of course things have changed there and the programmer may be gone now.

I may have discovered another problem I was having with pasting the URL's. Perhaps this can help some other poor fool like me. Don't place your cursor in the place, just right click and it places the cursor automatically and then paste. I believe I may have inadvertantly placed a space in the url and that could be why none of the pics in the breeders forum thread worked. I have now sucessfully posted 3 in a row in the Flower pics gallery so I think I solved my problem.
This will be difficult for every new member however or a lot of them so I hope it can be easier some day with a bit more size available in the posts and avatars but I shall be patient and keep working as well as this old mind can do. BOG

Ok, I see whats happening I think to Bog and some others.
Don't make the image smaller on you camera, you want a big image, in case you ever have to print it or make it a poster. :)
Memory is cheap / compact flash / memory stick/ whatever
so make the image big for keeping on your computer and/or cd.
You now have the big image on your hard drive and then
you must take that image and run it thru photoshop or equiv
and resize or in our case downsize to within skips specs and bring the resolution down to 72 dpi and then post.
photoshop elements cost 99 bucks and is well worth it.
If you don't have photoshop i have 5.0 and works
with my windows xp i can make a copy and send any
one who want it.

But I can leave my camera on the regular setting and downsize as Greenhit suggests. I think I am managing now... BOG
Greenhit is spot on with his advice. If you have an image editor program you should set the resize/resample to 72 dpi as that is the limit of most computer screen displays.
Also if you see an EXIF option, you should select to remove EXIF data when resizing. Since we don't display this info on the site or gallery there's no reason for it and it can make an image size many times bigger than need be. EXIF data is information about the image like the F-stop, exposure, etc. that advanced digital cameras record.
And y'all probably thought digital cameras made life easier!
Hey at least you don't have to buy film, bring it in exposed to the shop, wait hours or days then bring it home, scan it, then do the resizing & posting.
Looks like we're getting an FAQ together! ;)
BTW, I use Corel Photopaint, Adobe Photoshop but mostly Thumbs Plus for quick image manipulation and file maintenance.
There are many programs out there, but these have been the standard for years.
Thumbs Plus is the cheapest of them and allows you to manipulate batches of images at the same time. If you can master that, you can program hundreds of images to be adjusted automatically in various ways. You can also put a copyright stamp on it too.
Oh that's another good reason not to post your originals or large images - because this is the Net, and unless you don't mind people copying/stealing your image, even to sell or use in publications, then by all means put up your originals for people to take and claim as their own. Without a copyright notice or a better quality original image, it's your word vs. theirs.
Of course any image posted on this site will have a date recorded so the act of publishing your images on icmag.com acts as defacto copyright which we can verify should the need arise.

I've upped the avatar size to 70 x 70. I know it's still small, but it's plenty big for an avatar. You can have an image up to 5K in size.
If you want to maximize the avatar size, it should obviously be square shaped, not rectangular.

Seems kinda convoluted to get it to post, eh?
I've just improved the image posting facility. Now it's an easier copy and paste (or drag) of the complete URL (with img tags included).
http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/506/2DSC02961.JPG
I think this should make it quite a bit easier and more fool proof to put images in posts.
This method allows you to post as many images as you like, anywhere within your post (unlike on OG).
You can also choose the thumbnail or the full size image.
Let me know what you think!

tup! Great job Skip!!! Thanks for the hard work!
http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/500/850arnoldsmokespotpuff-thumb.gif
Now is there a way to link the thumbnail to the full size image in our gallery?
Yes I could add another option that would be a combo link, post up the thumbnail, link to the large image. I was just thinking about that.
But now, I've set it to automatically replace oversized images with the mid-sized image which is PERFECT for posting.
You'll now get a warning that the original image is too large, but you'll see the link to the midsize image instead, so now there should be NO PROBLEM posting images unless the gallery itself rejects it upon upload.
Enjoy the new features, and give me more feedback because I'm going to continue working on this feature with more options soon (like resizing your image & rotating too). ;)

Actually Ken, our server doesn't have cheap, slow hard drives. They are 2 superfast scsi in a RAID configuration. We only have 30 GB total available on the server and that is for many more sites than this, including other forums & galleries.
While we now have lots of room now, we'd run out of space long before we got close to overgrow's size.
We are going to implement a premium program once more pieces are in place and it will probably allow people about 20MB storage for images.
We gotta have some limits.
I just posted a photo FAQ (http://www.icmag.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=3&categories=Photo+Posting) cause many people are posting up photos with a file size much larger than necessary (with EXIF data usually), thus hogging drive space for few photos.
If you can't see the entire photo on a 800x600 screen it's wasted for most people.

let me know if i should try it differently.
could take a while though, i'm pretty foolish! ;)
Yes, Amish that is correct. Although you do need to add some space between your text and picture so it looks better.

I was going to post some more pics when I noticed my whole gallery dissapeared and is gone. I was wondering is this happening to others and can some moderator help me out here? KInd of weird, oh well.

I still can't post photos and the ones I had posted have all dissappeared which is very odd. Can I get some help please?

Anyone still experienceing problems should do the following,
copy the error message into a PM and send that to Skip.
He will sort it out for you, as he has done with others.
Thanks!
