well i havent seen the bass player's thread so if there is one floating around out there somewhere, i apologize.
i've been playin for about 13yrs now and i have an ibanez 4 string with a 300w gallien krueger. i like primus, RHCP, victor wooten among many others.
i like to play funk the most. i believe that blues is to guitar as funk is to bass.
now i would like to think that everyone out there that plays bass, plays because they love it, but if you just play bass cuz you suck at guitar, :pointlaug well you are welcome here too. (and you know who you are) lol jus kiddin.
so if you love to thump....lets hear about it :headbange

We could get funky! I think we are from the same neck of the woods. I play guitar, my best friend plays drums and we love the funk, the blues, heavy metal...
Any good music!

Fellow musician here....
I love jammin on the base. Such a different instrument than guitar note and sound, tone and feeling wise, while being the same physically.
Enjoy!!!

Bass player here.... I've been playing a Peavey Forum 5-string for a couple of years after going through many cheapo instruments. The Peavey is middle-o-the-line, but plays just great for me. Gotta luv that big 'B'!
I've been looking into getting one of these puppies but I can't find one to actually play. Price is about $700 online. Getting good reviews on the bass forums for an EUB. Would be great to have the upright fretless sound without carrying around a full-sized carcass to gigs!

My latest project is a 1973 Fender MusicMaster 4-string fretless with 3/4 neck. Picked it up at a garage sale years ago for almost nothing. I cleaned it up then and played it a bit, but it needed lots of work (which = $$$) I didn't have. Pulled it down from the rafters last week and started up again.
Its gonna rock when I get it done! I'll post a bass refurbish thread for the hell of it!
It originally looked like this:
http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/500/96141-thumb.jpg (http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/500/96141.jpg)
The pickguard was broken when I bought it and the paint was beyond repair so I'm sanding it down again (will finish with sunburst style), new bridge and nut, probably new tuners, new pickup and electronics.... is it worth it? This one is selling for $780.00 all original parts... I will probably be into it for about $300.00. Its a player for me so I don't care if its worth anything to anybody else.
ROCK ON!

I hold up the low end in a reggae band, though we really dont get to jam that much anymore. When I was younger I played in a few punk bands but playing bass in a reggae band is just so much fun. I have a Mexican Fender Jazz bass that I love.

Just thought I'd give this humble thread a bump....
After a great deal of deliberation about getting an EUB standup I decided that what I really wanted was that fretless sound. So I decided to go from this:
http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/500/9614VE-500-Big-thumb.jpg (http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/500/9614VE-500-Big.jpg)
To THIS!!!!
http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/500/9614hxb405natbfl351-thumb.jpg (http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/500/9614hxb405natbfl351.jpg)
Unfortunately, this is an EvilBay purch. Its definitely on the low end for basses (less than $300) but, damn.... I think its worth the price of admission, its Korean made I think. Hard to find even a used fretless 5-string for less than $500. Most of the Craigs list stuff is far more than that.
It needed to be set up by someone who knows what they're doing. My local tuneshop luthier does a nice job.... Doesn't have an attitude about working on cheaper instruments. Anyway, its plays alot better with new strings and a proper going over. Flatwound strings are freakin' killer.... so mellow, BUT this bass has active electronics so every one of those mellow tones can come across to punch you in the chest!
I've not played fretless much but this thing makes it easy, its really helping me get my pitch trained... just dig that mmmwwwwaaaahh sound!
As long as I'm bumping this thread.... :chin:

I played double bass for 12 years before being crippled by tendonitis. I switched to a stuart spector fretless four string several years ago it was the 12th bass made by ssd after reopening in 1994(?) but never played it much and sold it to help pay for a piano. -sorry guys

hmm...not many bassplayers here :jump:
Well, I´ve been spreading the good bass-vibes for about 28 years.
My Ibanez-bass have been my close friend from the start...she had a few years on her back before I bought her. Only the strings have changed once in a while.
My heavy Fender amp have been in the family for 23 years. I had a monster Peavey until my heart fell in love with the great sound from my Fender.

I´ve allways been swinging in bands. 6-7 different bands.
My latest project have been going for 8 years. We meet once in a week. The style is mostly rock...with a touch of pop  . Homemade lyrics and music. Setup is bass, drums, keyboards, guitar and song.
Here´s the weekly snakefarm...lol

A little thread bumpin' goin' on....
Picked up a low end acoustic bass today for the woodshed...evilbay purch (again dammit, I can't resist, stuff is cheap!) Its got more plywood than a trailer park and the neck is actually four different pieces of wood lammed together (those guys in Indonesia are so damn clever with the wood glue!) Crap, this thing is going to warp like crazy this winter....
Its got s*%t electronics as well....passive garbage..... might have to replace those.
I complain... but can you believe it?.. she sounds true enough. Never had a 'beach bass' before, but there will be some rowdy campfire music coming up soon.
It came with these trippy black (nylon?) flatwound strings.... I've never played anything like that before (except for a classical guitar). They sound really good with no amplification and add good volume. Anybody know what these are about?
Long Live the Indonesians!

I play, but that's it. I don't learn to play it, never took a lesson or tried to give myself any.
I just sit and noodle on my 91(jap) fender 4 string.

Proud bass player here! Been playing for 6 or so years now and beginning to get the general idea. No more flashy slap/pop stuff for me, my goal nowadays is to get "in the pocket" and stay there getting the heads bumping and the ladys' dancing :) I have a passive Warvick Corvette bass, the sound is nice and cuts through the nastiest guitar walls.
Too many favourite players to list, I'll stick to my top five (in no particular order)
Jaco Pastorius - Undeniable sense of harmony combined with solid groove. Jazz or Funk, Jaco is the man
Stuart Zender - Used to play in jamiroquai. Tracks like Travelling Without Moving always blow me away, I tend to ignore the rest of the band when listening to jamiroquai :)
- Justin Chancellor - Bass player for Tool. One of the most creative players out there today. Wonderful use of untraditional effects such as whammy and various bass synths.
- Trevor Dunn - Bass player for Mr. Bungle and others. When the band you play in changes between genres like Jazz and Thrash metal in one song you really need to be something special. The self titled album "Mr. Bungle" from 1991 is one of the most unpredictable records I've ever heard, not to mention "Disco Volante" from 1995. Not for everyone..
Charles Mingus - Often credited for his songwriting/bandleader abilities rather than his bass playing. I think he has one of the most distinct Upright bass tones there is. A huge influence on me. If you are new to Jazz I suggest "Mingus Ah Um" from 1959.
