Hey all,

Just thought I'd start a thread about songs / tunes that you really dig coz they are deep and meaningful in some way...

Perhaps there's a few that send a shiver down the spine or you just have to turn up a bit when you hear them...?

Any genre you like...?

If there are any lyrics in that tune that you particularly like then feel free to post them with any explanations etc.

Just listening to shine on you crazy diamond by the Floyd and it got me thinking...

So come on think hard and let's all have some new download material.

Shanti.

Bright Eyes - The Calendar Hung Itself *one of my fav songs*

Does he kiss your eyelids in the morning when you start to raise your head?
And does he sing to you incessantly from the place between your bed and wall?
Does he walk around all day at school with his feet inside your shoes?
Looking down every few steps to pretend he walks with you.
Does he know that place below your neck that is your favorite to be touched
and does he cry through broken sentences like I love you far too much?
Does he lay awake listening to your breath?
Worried that you smoke too many cigarettes.
Is he coughing now on a bathroom floor?
For every speck of tile there are a thousand more
that you won't ever see but most hold inside yourself eternally.

I drug your ghost across the country and we plotted out my death.
In every city, memories would whisper: "Here is where you rest."
I was determined in Chicago but I dug my teeth into my knees
and I settled for a telephone and sang into your machine.
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine

I kissed a girl with a broken jaw that her father gave to her.
She had eyes bright enough to burn me. They reminded me of yours.
In a story told she was a little girl in a red-rouge,
sun-bruised field and there were rows of ripe tomatoes where a secret was concealed.
And it rose like thunder, clapped under our hands.
And it stretched for centuries to a diary entry's end where I wrote,
You make me happy when the skies are gray
You make me happy the skies are gray and gray and gray.

Well the clock's heart it hangs inside its open chest with its hands
stretched towards the calendar hanging itself but I will not weep for those dying days.
For all the ones who have left there are a few that stayed.
And they found me here and pulled me from the grass where I was laid.

Vision of Shiva man :D hello.
it is pretty hard to top Pink Floyd when it comes down to contemporary music.
there's a lot of old music i like (old as in from 150 years to the oldest music we know of 5000 years??) but serious music is hardly made anymore. Pink Floyd is one of the few exceptions. Have you tried Book of Saturday by King Crimson? that is a song you would be interested in perhaps.
A personal favorite at the moment is a song called Philosophy Of Horror by Jedi Mind Tricks :D

peace!

Hey - thanks for all the input so far - I'm downloading a few suggestions right now

Hey Paz bro...what up?

I'll check those tunes out shortly - my download speeds are a bit crap at the minute!

The Floyd - what can i say? A purple om trip and some Pink Floyd when I was 15 - the rest is history!!

I know we've all got different tastes and what not but I like to keep an open mind and try not to get too boxed in. :D

On the reggae tip - if anyone likes reggae?

Here's a few:

Hard Times - Pablo Gad
Sons of slaves - Junior Delgado.

Some tunes that I've always had to turn up a bit...there are loads more too - just can't think of 'em at the mo.

Keep 'em coming.

Peace.

Children of the Sun by Billy Thorpe

People of the earth can you hear me
Came a voice from the sky on that magical night
And in the colors of a thousand sunsets
They traveled to the world on a silvery light

The people of the earth stood waiting
Watching as the ships came one by one
Setting fire to the sky as they landed
Carrying to the world children of the sun, children of the sun

All at once came a sound from the inside
Then a beam made of light hit the ground
Everyone felt the sound of their heartbeat
Every man, every woman, every child

They passed the limits of imagination
Through the door to the world of another time
And on the journey of a thousand lifetimes
With the children of the sun, they started to climb

Children of the sun, children of the sun

No more gravity, nothing holding them down
Floating endlessly, as their ship leaves the ground
Through the walls of time, at the speed of light
Fly the crystal ships on their celestial flight, on their celestial flight

Children of the sun, children of the sun...

Oh hell yes! One of my favorite tunes of all times for that very reason.

Since Rush is my fav. I would have to pick a song like Cygnus X-1 or Xanadu or La Villa Strangiato....oh hell. I would have to list most of their songs for a question like this.

Cathedral, by Crosby, Stills and Nash (hell, ALOT of their songs are favorites)
Major Tom, the one by Peter Schilling. Awesome when I am high and especially good when tripping.
The Only Way (hymn), by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
But if there is anything that will calm me down and relax me no matter what, it would have to be Down by the River and Cortez the Killer by Neil Young. I love Neil Young, with Buffalo Springfield, and with Crazy Horse, and especially by himself. The man is the best in my opinion. We jammed about 5 Neil albums on a rock beach in Pedernales Falls state park, near a river in the middle of the night. It was freezing, we took our jack daniels out of the ice chest so it would get colder! Perfect. Just like Neil Young.

Elliot Smith gives me a serious "Holy shit I think I want to hang myself" kinda shudder down the spine, that's how damn sad his music is. Shame he offed himself while he was still young, guarantee he would of become something amazing.

Elliott Smith - Waltz #2 Lyrics

First the mic then a half cigarette
singing cathy's
clown
that's the man that she's married to now
that's the girl that he takes around town
she
appears composed, so she is, i suppose
who can really
tell?
she shows no emotion at all
stares into space
like a dead china doll
i'm never gonna know you now,
but i'm gonna love you anyhow
now she's done and
they're calling someone
such a familiar name
i'm so glad that my memories remote
'cos
i'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note
here it
is the revenge to the tune
"you're no good,
you're no good you're no good you're no
good"
can't you tell that it's well understood
i'm never gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you
anyhow
i'm here today and expected to stay on and on
and on
i'm tired
i'm tired
looking out
on the substitute scene
still going strong
XO, mom
it's ok, it's alright, nothing's wrong
tell mr. man with impossible plans to just leave me alone
in the place where i make no mistakes
in the place where
i have what it takes
i'm never gonna know you now, but
i'm gonna love you anyhow
i'm never gonna know
you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow
i'm never
gonna know you now, but i'm gonna love you anyhow

Kings Crossing Lyrics

The King's crossing was the main attraction
Dominoes falling in a chain reaction
The scraping subject ruled by fear told me
Whiskey works better than beer
The judge is on vinyl, decisions aren't final
And nobody gets a reprieve
And every wave is tidal
If you hang around you're going to get wet
I can't prepare for death any more than I already have
All you can do now is watch the shells
The game looks easy, that's why it sells

Frustrated fireworks inside your head
Are going to stand and deliver dark instead
The method acting that pays my bills
Keeps the fat man feeding in Beverly Hills
I got a heavy metal mouth, it hurls obscenity
And I get my check from the trash treasury
Because I took my own insides out

It don't matter cause I have no sex life
And all I wanna do now is inject my ex wife
I've seen the movie
And I know what happens
It's Christmas time
And the needle's on the tree
A skinny Santa is bringing something to me
His voice is overwhelming
But his speech is slurred
And I only understand every other word

Open your parachute and grab your gun
Float down like an omen, a setting sun
Read the part and return at five
It's a hell of a role if you can keep it alive
But I don't care if I fuck up
I'm going on a date
With a rich white lady
Ain't life great?
Gi'me one good reason not to do it
(Because We love you)
So do it.

This is the place where time reverses
And dead men talk to all the pretty nurses
Instruments shine on a silver tray
Don't let me get carried away
Don't let me get carried away
Don't let me be carried away

the Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd and Umma Gumma by Pink Floyd. I dont know about all of them, but the Imax in Houston, Texas plays Sisyphus part 1 when people are getting seated. Wish they would play the whole album. The Atom Heart Mother Suite is one of the best songs, another one clocking in at 23:40 minutes.

Speaking of long songs....does anybody like Focus??? Hocus Pocus is damn good, but I am talking about
Answers Questions Questions Answers~~20 minutes long
Anonymous Two~~26:20 long and
Eruption~~23 minutes long
I know just because it is long does not mean it is good, but seriously...they are the best. Jan Akkerman is one of the great underrated guitarists. They are the best band to come out of Holland. Golden Earring is good too, but nowhere near.
Listen to Focus!! They are one of the best jam bands, period.

More RUSH. The Fountain Of Lamneth Part III Nobody at the bridge. Spine tingling, soul searching song.

"The Fountain Of Lamneth"

[I. In the Valley]

I am born
I am me
I am new
I am free
Look at me
I am young
Sight unseen
Life unsung

My eyes have just been opened
And they're open very wide
Images around me
Don't identify inside
Just one blur I recognize
The one that soothes and feeds
My way of life is easy
And as simple are my needs

Yet my eyes are drawn toward
The mountain in the east
Fascinates and captivates
Gives my heart no peace
The mountain holds the sunrise
In the prison of the night
'Til bursting forth from rocky chains
The valley floods with light

Living one long sunrise
For to me all things are new
I've never watched the sky grow pale
Or strolled through fields of dew
I do not know of dust to dust
I live from breath to breath
I live to climb that mountain
To the Fountain of Lamneth

[II. Didacts and Narpets]

Stay! Go!
Work! No!
Learn! Live!
Earn! Give!
Stay or fight? What's right?
Listen!

[III. No One At the Bridge]

Crying back to consciousness
The coldness grips my skin
The sky is pitching violently

Drawn by shrieking winds
Seaspray blurs my vision
Waves roll by so fast
Save my ship of freedom
I'm lashed helpless to the mast

Remembering when first I held
The wheel in my own hands
I took the helm so eagerly
And sailed for distant lands
But now the sea's too heavy
And I just...I just don't understand
Why must my crew desert me?
When I need...I need a guiding hand...

Call out for direction
And there's no one there to steer
Shout out for salvation
But there's no one there to hear
Cry out supplication
For the maelstrom is near
Scream out desperation
But no one cares to hear

[IV. Panacea]

The whiteness of confusion
Is unfolding from my mind
I stare around in wonder
Have I left my life behind?

I catch the scent of ambergris
And turn my head, surprised
My gaze is caught and held and I
Am helpless...mesmerized

Panacea, liquid grace
Oh let me touch your fragile face
Enchantment falls around me
And I know I cannot leave

Here's a meaning for my life
A shelter from the storm
Pacify my troubles with
Her body, soft and warm

Naked in our unity
A smile for every tear
Gentle hands that promise me
Comfort through the years

Yet I know I must be gone
Before the light of dawn

Panacea, passion pure
I can't resist your gentle lure
My heart will lie beside you
And my wandering body grieves

[V. Bacchus Plateau]

Another endless day
Silhouettes of grey
Another glass of wine
Drink with eyes that shine
To days without that chill at morning
Nights time out of mind

[Chorus:]
Draw another goblet
From the cask of '43
Crimson misty memory
Hazy glimpse of me
Give me back my wonder
I've something more to give
I guess it doesn't matter
There's not much more to live

Another foggy dawn
The mountain almost gone
Another doubtful fear
The road is not so clear
My soul grows ever weary
And the end is ever near

[Chorus]

[VI. The Fountain]

Look! The mist is rising
And the sun is peaking through
See the steps grow lighter
As I reach their final few
Hear the dancing waters
I must be drawing near
Feel, my heart is pounding
With embattled hope and fear

Now, at last I fall before
The Fountain of Lamneth
I thought I would be singing
But I'm tired...out of breath
Many journeys end here
But, the secret's told the same
Life is just a candle and a dream
Must give it flame

The key, the end, the answer
Stripped of their disguise
Still it's all confusion
And tears spring to my eyes
Though I've reached a signpost
It's really not the end
Like Old Sol behind the mountain
I'll be coming up again

I'm in motion
I am still
I am crying
I am...still
I'm together
I'm apart
I'm forever
At the start

Still...I am

Atmosphere - The Abusing of the Rib - "i wanna find these here so-called treasures/ the pleasures the trinkets the never-ending weekends/ acknowledging that i'm still just a piece of the sequence/ but seein' these different footprints got me needin to show my weakness"

Atmosphere - Don't Ever Fucking Question That - "Enough to hold you to the brightest of lights/ to place you dangerously close to that sun/ enough to acknowledge the flaws you can't ignore/ and recognize the cause of what's done is done/ more than enough to place my name behind my ideals/ and neglect my logic twice daily/ enough to keep me looking for my lucy in the sky with gems when I remember how you used to call me baby/ enough to look in my mirror with detest for every tear you shed regardless of why you wept/ enough to curse any man who can't appreciate the depth of the ocean i swam till i ran out of breath"

Incubus - Echo - "There's something about the way you move/ I see your mouth in slow motion when you sing/ more subtle than something someone contrives/ your movements echo that I have seen the real thing"

Stevie Ray Vaughan - Life By the Drop - "No wasted time/ We're alive today/ Churnin up the past/ There's no easier way/ Time's been between us/ A means to an end/ God it's good to be here walkin together my friend"

Anything by Neil Young and Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young) is absolutely amazing. One of my favorite songs in the world is Cowgirl in the Sand by Neil Young. It is one of the most amazing songs, and it always reminds me of my girlfriend, and I just love being reminded of her. She is the only girl I have ever known that likes the same music and hobbies that I do, and that is one of the reasons I love her. Also Down by the river by Neil Young (the live version in one of the CSNY dvds has all of CSNY doing it, unbelievable).
Another song that I listen to over and over again is 4+20 by Stephen Stills. Amazing.
Going Down by Albert King, Buddy Guy, the Jeff Beck Group and many others do this song too.
Creedence Clearwater Revival, everything they do. The Fogerty brothers were badass.

"Machine Gun" - Hendrix (Band Of Gypsys version)
"If 6 was 9" - Hendrix
"I'm Free Now" - Morphine
"Little Wing" (you pick - Vaughan, Hendrix, or Derek & Dominos)
"5 Long Years" - Freddie King (or Clapton)
"Over The Mountain" - Ozzy Osbourne (best metal guitar solo-ever!)
"Right Here, Right Now" - Fatboy Slim

And.....now I'm too high to think of any, but there's SO many others! :joint:

"Drunkship of Lanterns and The Haunt of Roulette Dares by Mars Volta"

absolutely great. Made a trek all the way to Chicago to see them recently. Oh my fucking god. Possibly one of the best live acts around right now, even if you are not into this kind of music. Made a friend go, who before the show said she "hated" them. After the show I see them as one of her favorite bands on Myspace.

TO BAD theyre actually opening up for some mediacore shit like the pepper(just my opinion).
