View Full Version : Who Wants to do a Grow Journal?
I'm planning on setting up a system for grow journals. I want to do a test with one of you to setup & debug the system. Hopefully it will just be a special "personal" forum, without too many changes, so it wouldn't be too different from just making posts, but with a few extra options.
So who's ready?

Skip,
I will be ready on Wed, the 24th. That's when my digi camera is being delivered.
I would be more than happy to test/debug this for you.
i should be starting a new grow soon ;)

ive just pulled out some trees ,,, .. lol ... and will have to pop some more in once i clear out the damn weeds that have grown , gee they thrive on fertilisers .. the benefits of a personal log grow would be great , will it be viewable by all ??? theres a great time for leafy annuals this week here so id imagine i can start within a week doing a grow for such a purpose , actually i believe i have already planted the seeds , will get a shot in a day or so ...
Well someone suggested filling in a form with lots of fields and variables to be filled in, but I think it's unnecessary as I would program an easy to use search to find whatever you need. So if you wanted to find out about a particular item, it would search all the grow journals instead of just whatever keyword matched a particular field.
So a search on spider mites or even just "mites" would bring up all relevant grows that had that problem (who doesn't?).
But what we would add is perhaps an html editing utility so ppl could do more interesting stuff instead of just text & images.
Also we could have a calendar linked to it maybe, or whatever else you guys suggest to make it more interesting and interactive.
Maybe a grow Q&A where ppl ask questions of the grower.
So imagine a personal forum, perhaps with a few sticky threads at the top. One for images of the grow, another for technical stuff, another for Q&As, and maybe just a general rant thread.
I think what that other person was getting at was enforcing some kind of standards of measurements for what ppl are doing.
So I guess we'd need to come up with an FAQ for the grow journal too so we can expect a minimum of conformity. So that ppl would at least include the same basic info about their grow. But I don't think it's necessary to categorize it all.
We could divide the grow journals by type of course - Indoor, Outdoor, Hydro like. I could also have a separate listing of the active grows so ppl can see the latest posts in order.
I don't think we can expect too much conformity, like say pix every week or whatever, cause you can't force ppl to do specific things.
Anyway, hit me with your suggestions! :)

I think I'm already doing one in the indoor forum. I do have some more picture from their different ages that could be added. But the full thread is actually over at CW, cause I can post pics that are more than 100kb.

i thought about setting up a grow journal thread, to keep track of my first gorw (i am less than 2 weeks in) but at that time i was not sure if i wanted to pollute the board with more of my newbie ramblings... but i think it would be great... i am about to start another grow in a few days, and would be all about beta testing....

Skip,
That is a great idea. Check out my gallery and see what I have going. I actually just started a few Indigo & Skunk #1 and 1 shishkaberry to go with my NL#5 & Apollo 11 clones.
I'm just starting the skunk & Indigo indoors and planning on moving them outside when they are big enough. That should be right about the time my others are ready to flower in my grow fridge.
I do growlogs/journals during my grow with pics almost everyday ect. It would be neat to make a place where we could post daily pics of the operation from start to finish no typing inbetween and link it to our grow journal, just for a pictoral review.
Eitherway keep an eye out for the Grow Fridge!

Good ideas. Perhaps I should setup the journals in the galleries themselves? I really would like to promote the galleries more anyway. They can have many uses. It seems the people from overgrow expect to have the galleries just as some kind of adjunct to the forums, but it has it's own uses and good tools (which I could probably add to).
But I guess linking the two is good as well.
I look foward to checking out your journals & gallery, Sharppain! (ugh, what a name! )

Flowerman, are you saying you can't post pix larger than 100K here? I have it set for 250K, so you shouldn't have a prob with that size at all. It should also be resizing large images on upload. I'll be working on the galleries tomorrow.

Skip,
I think adding the grow journal to the galleries is a brilliant idea. That way step by step we can track grows and not be inturrupted by posts and jibba-jabba (i took that from Mr.T)
I also have had alot of problems uploading pics. I have to set my camera to the lowest resolution and then the pics come out shitty.
anyway your doing a great job here skip, I think I speak for all when I say Thank You for giving us a place to call home.

Sounds great, Ill do a Lifesaver log if you would like.
Can do it right now!:D
You should never have to lower the resolution of your camera. Make every shot your best one. But do resize the images for publication on the net. You could also put a little copyright notice (esp. if they're really good). I'll post up an whole FAQ on image posting.
Since most people on this site have a lot of great pix to post, it's good to know how to deal with them.
Cropping then resizing images are the two most common functions you can do with software, but you could also adjust the exposure (brighten-darken), change the coloration (nice for indoor grows), sharpen, and do much more. You can even do batch tasks (like resizing) on groups of images at once.
There's no doubt you can get carried away, and it's a lot of fun, but also a lot of work and time consuming.
One thing that keeps cropping up is the EXIF info that most new high end cameras add to your images. These must be removed, otherwise images take up twice the space on the server as necessary. I think that is one reason why certain people are having this problem uploading images. EXIF makes your images too big, so remove it from your uploads.
To tell you the truth, the gallery software we have IS supposed to do much of this, but seems to be buggy. I'll be checking it out soon.

Flowerman, If you use our "Add Photo to Post" link it will automatically choose a medium resolution for your post. If you prefer to make the larger image available, just use the combo link (small image with link to large image).

Hey Skip, I think grow journals would be a fine addition to ICMag, I'll be ready pretty soon to post a grow journal of some "Mountain Berry" my cross of K2 male and a Blueberry fem. so when are ya starting them?

I'm in there Skip
let me know when to start
going to have to increase the size limit on the gallery too, some people are going to struggle to complete a full grow log within 5mb.
stupid limit to have on a site that wants to encourage people to post lots of pictures.

I am in, just started a grow 9 days ago.
I need to know whether any of you folk wanting to do grow journals are using a mac. The reason is I want to enable this easy to use html editor which I use for journals on my sites, but it doesn't work on Macs. In fact it only works with IE on a PC.
So please let me know if you don't use IE (Internet Explorer) as well.
Let me know so I can decide whether to implement the editor or not.
Thanks,

Skip, I plan to document mine here soon. I am not quite ready to run just yet;) I started a thread called "6 station DWC" in the hydro forums. I'll be posting updates & journal entries there. All I am lacking is a little better ventilation and light-proofing the door and I'm cloning. I'm prepping the Mums right now:D Let me know what I need to do!

I agree, my grow thread on myganjagrow is only half done and i've already used over 6MB of pictures. It would be very difficult to do a comprehensive grow journal with only 5MB of pics IMO.

Hey Skip,
I'm on a Mac running Safari for my browser. I plan on doing a grow journal or two. I hope to give the great outdoors a try this year too. So if you have to do something special for us Mac minorities I say go right ahead. I'm a week or two from starting my journal, so till then!
Blatant
I've found a new html editor that works across all platforms! So Mac & Netscape or Mozilla fans don't need to change browsers.
I've already integrated it and made it work for our grow journals. It's not that big a deal, but it will allow you much more flexibility in creating a unique look for your journal. If you know a bit of html you can do a lot.
Also the image posting will be even easier as you can just drag and drop images directly into your journal.
There will be more features that will help organize your journal including a calendar (i work on that next).
Then I will either integrate a forum for each grow or just setup a new comments system for the grow journals (more likely now).
I'm about halfway done, and it's possible I can roll this out in time for the Cup...

Yes, you'll be able to work on your journals as live as you want to be. I would post up the images first. Then you can select them to place later.
Still got 3-4 more things to do on the journals.

so it sounds like in a few days we'll have something no one else does..
i think a calendar view would add a lot of functionality.
i plan on using this journal-post thing to keep track of what's going on with what i see in california..
this will be everything from city council meeting reports to evaluations of different dispensery products...
it should be a great source of information for anyone interested in california or medical cannabis in general. day by day in the trenches of the war..
(this post made possible by domina, i've got to remember what i was hitting when i was thinking of shit like this)
OK, everyone, the journals are ready for testing. You are welcome to start a journal if you will provide feedback and bug reports. Please let me know if anything isn't working right & any suggestions for improvements.
The look of the journals will be revised after the testing phase.
The journals are here:
http://icmag.com/journal.php
Please bookmark it as the journals won't be public for awhile. So don't expect a lot of hits except from others doing journals for now.
I may be working on the journal program, so don't be surprised if you suddenly can't access them or something doesn't work right that did before (let me know about that)
Enjoy the journals and let me know if you run into problems (PM me please).

"Can I migrate a Thread I already started into a journal?"
You can but it might not be what you really want to do.
You can just copy & paste your posts into the journal pretty easy. Not sure if the images will come out.
Also you'll lose the comments of others since that is handled separately in the new journals. In other words the journals are not threads so it's not like you just move a thread.
Oh, I did test the Mac version of the journals with mixed results. So those of you with Macs may still encounter problems. Make sure you've got java installed.
Good luck everyone! :)

this is a good thing to replace work journals. i keep one at work which is a dumb thing to do. storing this info in the internet could be safer.
i will definitely volunteer to try this out for you. in a few weeks i'm starting a new verticalbulb soil grow
could a journal thread be like a cross between a thread and a calendar..
it works the same as a normal thread, the difference is that you can click 'calendar view' which changes the thread to a calendar view. if you click on a day you get all posts for that day. if you click thread view you get a long list like now.
and the journal 'owner' can view personal or private grow info by using the calendar feature - boring stuff like temp records, nutrient mixes, timetables..
because it is a grow journal, 'filter' is the default view.
so in 'billy whizz's speed journal' you see only billy's posts. unless you click 'unfilter' or 'view replies'. perhaps you can 'unfilter' single posts..
an annoying feature of og is that if you use the filter feature you have to filter/unfilter the hole thread. try using it on a 30 some page thread it's bollocks. if you unfilter you go back to the start. unfilter individual posts yes.
a bit like making each of the thread starter's post into a drop down menu of replies.. ??
okay so now i'm feeling really high off of that hdf

i ahve just been trying to post pictures... anytime i drag a pic into the text field and then post i look at the post and only the title appears... i am using firefox if that matters... i just tried it in IE and it still doesn't show...
OK, I've doubled the storage to 20MB for everyone. :)
For more than that, we'll have to setup some pay service.
So keep your images to a reasonable size, and just post your best!
Enjoy.
