all dogs are good, it doesn't matter if it's a "strain" or a "hybrid", it's that individual dog's personality that is way more important.
Don't rush into it, observe. Pick a puppy that picks you is a good advice.....you have to have that special chemistry happening.
My next first choice (depending if I outlive my current mutt) would be a Jack Russell Terrier ....most dogs from that breed have intelligence, loyalty, attitude, energy and spunk in abundance. This breed is small so they are easy to get friends to babysit them when you go away.
Every smoker should have a dog. They make great listeners and sometimes (esp when the bud is good) will add to the conversation, though mostly it's one-sided.
woof!
I voted Pit, but have always had pure bred Staffordshire bull terriers. great with kids, but still have that fear factor for the non dog lover.

I agree! But if you feel you must I would go with the Shepard.
Bullmastiffs are great dogs, but in my experience there are breeds much better built for personal protection! My Mastiffs have always been/seemed way to laid back.

I've had purebreds and shelter mutts; I love 'em all.
Do some research; make sure you understand the traits of the breeds. Dogs need to be part of the family, so you want to be sure you can live with them day in and day out.
My wife wishes i had a tongue like that.

Go for intelligence, Australian Shepard. I know it seems counter-intuitive to put australian and intelligence together but they are one of the most intelligent dogs out there. JK

OP here are a few links for you to read.
You have a few quiet different breeds in mind...so you I highly recommend to read the following...since a dog is not as independent as a cat is and also is a 10 to 20 year long commitment:
German Shepherd Dog (http://dogbreedinfo.com/germanshepherd.htm)
Labrador Retriever (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/labrador.htm)
American Pit Bull Terrier (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanpitbull.htm)
Rottweiler (http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/rottweiler.htm)
Here is one of my own dogs:

Over the years I have actually had every one of those breeds except a pit bull...which I probably won't ever own. Nothing personal against them they just don't have the physical qualities I enjoy in breeds. My dog needs to be able to brave the elements. We get lots of shitty weather and the water is never warm...ever.
I would personally choose the labrador retriever in a heartbeat. There is a reason they get used so much as service and rescue dogs. Intelligence, personality, endurance, strength, looks, loyalty and are TOUGHER THAN STEEL...no not fighting tough...elements tough. Labs will out hike and out swim most humans if its in shape.
Being an overall good sized, strong animal is part of owning a dog to me. I would never in a million years own a tiny dog I can pick up with one hand. Just a personal preference but I need to know my dog can hike up a mountain side and swim through a moving river with confidence.
They can handle virtually any level of cold water/weather like its nothing. They will break ice just fine in freezing water. Just be sure to get their butts/tails dry kinda quick. Trust me when I say that the enjoyment a labrador gets from swimming alone is enough to own one. That shit will put a smile on your face everytime.
I loved the couple shepherds my dad had when I was a kid...but to be completely honest they remind me of cops and are not the most attractive breeds to me in general. They also do not have anywhere near the goofy fun kid-friendly personalites that labradors typically have...after being around a lot of different breeds, both rescued and bred, it became painfully obvious some breeds just have boring or annoying personalities...trained or not. Yes, there are always exceptions to the rule but not many will argue that shepherds have more fun personalities than labradors. There is a good reason why it is america's most popular dog.
You sure as hell ain't gonna see a rottie or pitt swimming in cold rivers/lakes for long without whimpin out. They just dont have the coats for it. Leave those breeds for the skinny wannabe tough guys...hehe jk.

That ain't that bad...my dogs are average 3x of how much those Bullmastiff pups are...
I trained mine where they don't even eat/take treats from anyone else than me...and their temper is awesome...my 3 year old is taking rides on them!

i also think you should get a puppy from a shelter.. in bigger cities they can have all breeds, depending on what u decide. i voted pit only because i have one and think shes awesome. im sure most of the people who voted owned a dog of that breed.

I second this, Cane Corso is a great dog. I personally like Neapolitan Mastiffs. They are the lions of dogs to me. I will always try to own a Neo for as long as I live. From your list though, I chose the Rotty. I love their temperament just as must as the Neo's. :joint:

i can agree with this, my bullmastiff too is laid back, she is protective in that she will get inbetween you and whatever she deems is a threat but shes not a gaurd dog, i would go with a shepard for its intelligence or rottwieler for its territorial instincts, btw good to see you here medical
