The progression of organic, sustainable, gardening has lead me to my now obsessive interest in mycology. Mycelium are extremely interesting, and extremely necessary for soil health, tree health, and human health.
Beyond the science of mushrooms and mycelium, being able to go on a hike and come back with dinner is amazing. Especially considering mushrooms only pop up in certain times, in certain places, under certain conditions.
Not everything I find is edible, but a lot is. Remember, WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT. Never eat anything you are not absolutely positive about.
I recommend David Arora's book: Mushrooms Demystified. It is the bible of mushroom identification, extremely valuable and knowledgeable, and very entertaining to read.
Here are some of my finds. Anyone else have any good finds? I notice mushrooms EVERYWHERE these days, popping up out of my compost pile, growing in the back yard, etc etc..

But when you do know they can be quite the treat. I'm also a wild mushroom fan although when I do collect I take them over to a friend of mine which I trust my life with when it comes to anything that deals with nature and we do a double check
All and all an awesome thread

yeah there's a general fungiphobia in this country, which is somewhat good because there is more for me :)
But yeah, you shouldn't eat any mushrooms if you aren't absolutely positive what they are. David Arora's book is a great guide too.

That book is by far my favourite book to bring adventuring.
Reads like a dream, very easy to figure out what's what.
Still would want someone with me who's done it before.
Simple things like half pink with a spec brown can be edible but the same mushroom with full pink no brown gills could kill you.

Mushrooms can make a good meal become an gormet meal, but of corse if in dought, toss it, but when you know how to identify mushies beyond thier pure look, the spores, thier color, thier shape, their mycilum, its color. sorry cant think of any other ways, havent picked up any of my mycology books as of late
I really dig mushrooms, but I'm afraid the extent of me picking them in the wild stops with the morel. It's too bad they're only around once a year. I'd like ta learn more about how ta grow em. Morels sell fer around 20 dollars a pound around here. That could add up fast if you were growin em. BC

It is better IMHO to grow your own if in doubt. Oyster mushrooms are very tasty. Morels are the only ones that you have to hunt for. Very nice reward once you fry up a mess of them. Good Times IJ
P.S. 'Let's Grow Mushrooms' is a good DVD.

Im with you B.C. I love em, but to pick them is a different story, I would be so afraid to pick the wrong ones...the news had a story about a family that just picked some and got really sick, forget what kind but that would be my luck! ...so Ill leave it to the experts and just enjoy eating them :)

Spore syringes last about 4-5 months in the fridge, whereas prints will last years in the fridge.
Yeah, it is better that you go with a experienced guide to go picking on your first couple of maiden runs.

Mushrooms brought a whole new excitement into my life. I look forward to the rain and everything it brings. The fact that I can go out for a walk in the forest and come back with dinner still amazes me.
When I first started, I wouldn't eat anything, just go out to see what I could find and try to identify them. So so good.
It's gotten to the point where I've had some pretty intense mushroom hunting dreams that were a total tease, but inspired me the next day.
There's a lot of varieties that will grow in a compost pile, or even in a garden bed. Fresh mushrooms with fresh vegetables is incomparable. Fungi.com sells the spawn.
http://fungi.com/kits/outdoor.html
The "Three Amigos" Garden Pack
For species successionism of friendly fungi in the garden, we recommend using these three garden allies: in concert, the Garden Oyster (Hypsizygus ulmarius), the Garden Giant (Stropharia rugoso-annulata) and the Shaggy Mane (Coprinus comatus). They can be placed in the garden for the benefit of vegetables and for improving soil quality. And, gourmet mushrooms flourish throughout the seasons to create the best of edible landscapes!
Also, this book is the bible:
http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/500/239251TVKXVYC9L_SS500_-thumb.jpg (http://www.icmag.com/gallery/data/500/239251TVKXVYC9L_SS500_.jpg)
I took an ecology class in college, we were studying dichotomous keys and went out and people in the class found like 40 different kids of shrooms, our prof was a mycology specialist and said that one I found was called a death cap. I don't think mushroom hunting is for me besides morrels! :bashhead:
This past summer was so wet, I saw florescent and bioluminescent fungus and very strange things. I have never seen many of the types I saw this year in my woods ever before.
Edit: The bioluminescent one was a jack o lantern I think, they were orange and grew on a fallen tree in a little cluster of bright orange caps, very pretty.. I will get pics next summer!

I love mushrooms!! The only one's I've hunted are Morels. I'm going to have to get that book to get more mushies though. Any one know if a bunch of edibles grow in Michigan?
Any one ever grow non psycadelic mushrooms from one of those kits or plugs?

Anyone ever notice how slugs will tear a mushroom down as fast as possible? I was at a national park recently an a lot of the mushrooms had what looked like colonies of slugs around and over them and since I was camping I watched many mushrooms rise and already be decimated lol.
Last spring in my back yard we harvested approximately 19lbs of king and butter boletes in like 10 mins, not even a single bug. turn around and sold half of em to this local guy, then he made me a bolete burger....mmmm. one of my most memorable mushroom hunts, didnt even walk for a 1/4 mile. BE CAUTIOUS WHEN PICKING MUSHROOMS IN THE CITY! Mushrooms absorb everything around their medium including heavy metals and other carcinogens. no train track shrooms or side of the road shrooms...bad news. Has anyone taken classes on mycology here? very interesting and a great possible career. -quadracer do you have the field guide that goes with mush demystified? "all the rain promises and more" nice and handy for those less familiar possibilities in the field.

Kahl, "All That The Rain Promises" is an amazing book, especially since it is written from the perspective of my area. A good friend has a copy, and I use hers in a bind.
Hopefully these rains re-invigorates things in the ground, the season is looking somewhat sad this year :(
I keep that book in my car just in case i ever see an interesting shroom. Yes very sad indeed, hopefully the farmers almanac is correct. a wetter than normal end of february, lets hope this is just the start.

Hi again my friends,
I found a few pics from last june on my hard drive.
Spring gathering of girolles (chanterelles) that were divine, plus one or two cepes.
I'm now patiently waiting for the morel season, around april. Unlike other mushrooms, I usually find them in my very garden at the foot of apple trees !

Morels are also pretty abundant around these parts as well. Couple springs back after a rain they were poppin' up everywhere. Pan. subbalteatus are the only psychedelic mushrooms that grow anywhere near here, and being so common, you probably have some around your home when the conditions are right.

What is that Indica Jones, Pint jars, PF style for the PE, and whole rye (going to bulk sub? or just straight up casing) for the Thai?
It's been awhile but last year I had a mildly successful run, just 3 pints of rye straight cased with coir/verm, got just over an oz off the first flush. Before that it had been probably more than 5 years since I last grew. It's amazing how quickly they go from primordia/pins to full blown fruit bodies. Or from spores to harvest for that matter.
Indica Jones
02-18-2009, 05:30 PM
Yeah, fruiting takes about 72 hours............LOL. The mycellium that you see in the jars sometimes takes about 4 weeks till full colonization. Sometimes quicker if you dial in the temp, humidity, and air.
PE=Penis Envy
First time with this strain................I heard that it loves casing in straw. I first want to see how many flushes I get PF style as well. Nothing beats casing though. PF is just quicker..........LOL. I just inoculated some Yellow Oyster and some brown Lion's mane I got from Oregon that should make some lovely omeletes.

I would usually but my incubating jars into, a well, erm, incubator. Double tub, bottom one filled with water and a 10gal fish tank heater, bunch of wire ties to hold the top tub that wants to float to the bottom one. I would go with quart jars and they would take 2-3 weeks to before full colonization in the incubator.
Yeah, you gotta give it to the PF tek for a quick batch, not going to yield a whole lot but it doesn't get much easier. But casings or spawning to bulk sub is the way to go IMHO. It's nice to just pretty much set it and forget it. Hmm, all this talk, maybe it's time to bust out the supplies!

Indica Jones
02-20-2009, 05:02 AM
You would have to pasterize the compost pile first. Maybe run some steam through it? I like to use peat moss and verm for a casing mix. I like it to be as clean and soiless as possible. Straw...............I am really starting to love it. Using a clothes basket and straw will yield me about 10lbs of shrooms.

That's just the dry verm I put on top to keep the green mold(trichoderma) away. The cake shrunk and the dry verm is falling down the side. When doing PF using syringes, the mycelium goes from the top down. I agree casing cakes are the way to go. I was just showing my brother a way to get his shroom legs.

Whether I'm in New England or the Baltics, I can find a bunch of different mushrooms in the woods that are either edible or better.
Where I live now, I can go in the woods and get about a pound of chanterelles every morning from late april until june, and then in late august again. Plenty of the king boletus here, too.
I won't pick anything that isn't really good, as long as I have a choice, though, and I never even touch a bad one, let alone pick it and put it near others.

Hey Canna,
Those mushrooms are definitely NOT Chanterelles. I'm not sure what kind they are. Did you take a spore print? Was there any staining on the mushroom?
For a proper ID post it on the shroomery here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Board/3
Those mushrooms on the rapid rooters are too cool!!!!

Haha. The old people probably tell that to the young people so the young people bring them fresh mushrooms. Those Italians know and cherish their shrooms, I doubt an old Ital would eat a deadly species, but it's hard to speak in generalizations.
It is etiquette here to share finds with the older people who still love fresh shrooms but cannot physically gather them (or at least as much as you). Perhaps it's some sort of mushie karma.

Mushrooms are some of the most fun to watch, "fruiting" specimens that I've come to see. Rhizomorphic mycelium is a sight for sore eyes, as well as different species being grown in agar, what an image. Thanks for throwin up this thread and all the contributions, very cool.

Do some research! Also even if you think you found an active species in your area don't eat it.. You could easily get very sick or even die. If your serious about mushrooms then grow your own..

oh I love me some morels.....I'll have to dig up some pics on the hard drive for ya alll.....I found over a thousand this year....well between me and a friend..and we dont count spikes. That is all greys and yellows. I just dont know what to look for if its not a morel. I would love to go out with a experienced hunter sometime though. If anyone is in the midwest and is planning a weekend hunt or anything, I would be game. I actually just ordered 2 books, 1 for the phsycadelic ones and a book on edibles. But I still dont think I would eat one just because a book says so, I would need some assurance from another, wiser hunter.

I love mushroom hunting. Some of my best times have been spent out in the woods looking at the ground. It is so fun and exciting. My favorites are chanterels. I have also found a lot of boletes, and a few shaggy manes. I found a new morrel patch on my property last winter but they were already over the hill. But I will be keeping an eye on that area for sure. The coming rains bring worry for my ganja and excitement for my fungi. "All that the rain promises and more" has been my hunting companion for years. Happy hunting.

Yea I love hunting too.. I usually always look at the wood lovers.. Those for me are some of the most ignored and facinating mushrooms.. They are also huge.. It can take years for the mycellium to colonize a big enough portion of a tree to fruit.. I dont know they are just always passed over..

Oooer, not good
I have been up in the mountains a few times here recently, getting Ravellones, Bollets, Patatas and Patas de Perdix, all very good. I will take some piccies next time... The Patas de Perdix - Partridge Foot turns a stunning dark Red when cooked, Ravellones with their distinctive Orange/Green colour are truly superb, the same price as Fillet Steak and possibly tastier.
The story goes from the locals, that if you fry a few Garlic cloves whole, with the paper still on, that if the Garlic turns black, then the Mushrooms you are cooking are poisonous..... All mine has cooked right, never turned black and I do not appear to be dead yet. Foolish words really, with an empty stomach, a fridge full of Mushrooms and 4 hours of Friday 13th still left...
Apparently nothing mushroomwise in Spain will really kill you, just make you ill. If you take the skin off and do not eat it you are probably OK. Not quite definite enough for my liking, so I stick to the few I know...

Are those shaggy manes?
Na, they are Amanita pachycolea (http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Amanita_pachycolea.html) and there is one picture of Boletus Edulis.
They are really good, but you have to be absolutely sure what you are picking. A family recently was hospitalized for eating Amanita phalloides (http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Amanita_phalloides.html), the Death Cap.
The Grisettes are different and grow in a different habitat, so not too risky. They do give my stomach a bit of a kick moreso than other species.

I had a friend go crazy from eating fly amanita years ago. He tried to kill his best friend by hitting him in the head with a hammer. Luckily our friend survived. We later found out that the vikings would eat the fly amanita to go into bezerker mode before battle.

They are the best, hands down. Morels go good on everything!!! Fish, steak, eggs, by themselves, chicken, not to mention all the pastas and other goodness.
I have a huge jar of dried morels. They smell like a rich chocolate. The texture is amazing too, morels have all these little nooks and crannies (dirt can easily get in there so clean them properly).
