Three year old pot. Any need to decarboxylate?

I want to make tincture or canna coconut oil with weed that has been stored in mason jars for over three years. The weed seems as strong as it used to, but the high is not as sativa-like. The smell isn't as strong as it used to be either. Is there any need to decarboxylate after sitting for 3 years?

It should be ready to go as is. If it's a large amount, you could try making a couple small test batches with one of them decarbed just to be sure.

How are you planning to extract it?

Well, I guess I will just let the ground up pot sit in a jar with coconut oil, glycerin or alcohol (Green Dragon) for a few weeks/months before straining. Now that I think about it, maybe heat would speed up the process even though I probably don't need the decarb. Any ideas for the easiest way to utilize a lb of weed? thx

THCA can be stored for years under the right conditions (freezer) - the conditions here were not specified. I'd guess that in the dark at room temperatures, a sealed container could prevent some decarboxylation just from having a CO2 atmosphere. If there has been no biological activity going on, along with no heat, air, or light, complete decarboxylation seems a little speculative.

Material that dry and desiccated will work better with a non polar extraction. Alcohol will produce greeeeeeeeen flavored tincture, as there is nothing protecting the chlorophyll from the alcohol in desiccated material.

Glycerin will work, but there won't be any whimsical flavors darting hither and yonder on the tongue, as the monoterpenes will be long gone. Since you aren't losing the terpenes by doing so, I would do the glycerin extraction hot as well.

Hot coconut oil might be the best solution, short of butane, pentane, or hexane.

So back to your question, given your choices, I would personally hot extract the material with coconut oil, and run a sample up to 250F and watch for C02 bubbles, to tell the exact state of the decarboxylation.
