Based on Windows history it seems to be better to wait a year or so and then change after the first, or second, service pack release.

This is what made 7 so great, they let us have it b4 it was released to be beta testers. Vista was totally under wraps,so much so that when it was released many drivers for MANY products were not even available yet and some to this day still are not :) So even the manufacturers knew Vista sucked and would not be around long enough to mess with it.

7 is the real deal most of the issues that would have required the service packs mentioned above were addressed in beta testing and implemented b4 the release.

But if your asking if it has bugs in it?

Well it is Windows.

First of all, thanks for starting this thread.

I am using a two month old Dell Laptop with Vista. It has been crashing like crazy lately. I have reformatted it twice and althought the crashing seems to have slowed down, it still happens. I had 100s of CDs that I ripped on it, and lost all of them in the reformat. That is days worth of ripping. This Dell laptop has a dual core processor, 64 bit, 5gm Ram etc, and It just seems buggy. I had a Toshiba laptop that I gave to my children with Vista that never crashed. I asked for my free upgrade to Windows 7 and have been informed it has been shipped. I hope this solves the problem. I have an Acer Desktop with about the same specs as the Dell laptop and running Vista that is great. I have been told by a friend that Dell software conflicts with Vista. I am hoping the simplicity of Windows 7 is the answer. If not I am going to make Dell eat this laptop. I travel a lot and will not tolerate an unreliable laptop. The Dell cost about twice what the Toshiba cost that I gave to my kids.

It is drivers that causes the issue you describe. Without the proper WORKING driver your system will crash and you are not alone. Try to get a driver for a p1000 HP photo printer for Vista.
They never made one and the only way to use it was the xp driver with a work around and sometimes it still crashed. For a power issue Vista was fun,we ALWAYS had to work to keep it running like it should but for the average home user who might have issue's understanding what a driver is Vista was a nightmare and imo should have NEVER been released.

When you get 7 and install it I welcome you to the days not since XP Pro that Windows was in fact fun again.

Ubuntu Linux > Windows 7

Windows is just starting to add features that Linux had in 2001.

They've been caught stealing code from open source programs and selling it under a different license. Very illegal.

The Windows "Emulator" (WINE) for Linux has better Legacy support for XP programs than either Vista or 7 does.

My Operating System is FREE as in FREEDOM.

Not more Linux rubbish. Every time somebody mentions Windows, someone always has to chip into the conversation telling people to get a Mac or get Linux. Most of the time that would just cost the person more money and waste their time. Linux is great for servers, but that's about it.

I've said this before in another thread about Windows 7, but if anybody here is a computer science student then bug Microsoft and you'll get a free, legit copy of Windows 7 and Microsoft Office. Well worth it, IMO, as Windows 7 is probably the best OS I've tried. It still has a while to beat XP in terms of compatibility though.

After a year using it, I can say that the best SO that I tested on windows after w 2000, and yes, many things have been copied from Ubuntu / Linux

I run out of trial in April .... I think is a release candidate for beta testers

What things have been copied from Ubuntu? I know there was an issue before when Microsoft hired a third party software company to write some code and the company just stole the code from open-source software, but I've found that as far as the actual user experience goes the two OS's are nothing alike.

I not put Wista on my PC, I run XP with all the upgrades and patches before this summer. In this summer I put Win 7, and it run good in a 2 gb ram and 4600 intel processor. Also, I not see more new things, for almost 9 years of work I expectating more from Microsoft. I made the upgrade most because I was the last of my friend who use XP...
