If you don't need the whole block right away, just jam a knife into the edge of the block and use it to pry off chunks.
Put the chunks in a water tight container, (I use a kitty litter tray), and pour some PH'd, (5.2 - 6.4), lightly nuted water over it and stand back.

Not allowed to play with knives when stoned?
Put the whole block in a large garbage can and add several gallons of water.

In a hurry? Use warm water.

Bingo.. Warmer water and a container with a lid.. it soaks it all up and when u come back to the bin in a couple hours it'll be ready to break up by hand...

I know what you mean about the raw fingers though LOL.. first time i got the bricks I had no patience and wet it and broke it all up by hand.. ouch hahah.. yeah couple hours in water in a container, and ur good to grow..

IME GH brand cocotek blocks which are a similar quality coir are much quicker to take on water, and do break up easier/quicker then the cocogro blocks..

just put a knife in it and find which way the strands are running, the "grain" if you will.......then try and break off AWAY from grain....along with the knife and using the "grain" method it should fall off like cake. I only use Bot coco and I had that same trouble for the 1st 3-5 blocks, I then just figured it out one day, once you get it started you dont even need the knife. I dont even flush my Bot coco anymore, if I do its onl a quick little 30 second flush in a 5 gallon bucket. It is good stuff, I have trid a few different types and botainncare was the best by a landslide. Good luck to ya pal.

I use the "nail puller" side of a hammer. One good swing gets the claws embedded and rips the brick apart no problem.
Oh, I use the Botanicare bricks and bales, if for now other reason than they're easier to transport and store than big floppy bags.
