R U Interested in working in Alaska Fishing or Crabbing?

M

movingtocally

To clarify, a dude with no skills can just roll up to a random plant in the area, say he's looking for work, and he's getting 16 hour days with overtime pay 6+ days a week?

I'd love to just waste 3 months away banking up like 10K.

Damn.

I had a friend who went to AK a few years back. SHE (that's right) busted her ass trying to find a job on a fishing rig, was homeless for a while, but finally landed one. She was not athletic (a bit on the fat side) so my guess is she wasn't quality crew.

She went back a year later and couldn't find anything. My guess is she sucked dick for cash because she never explained how she made enough to live on. This was four years ago.

I don't really know what my point was. Perhaps, it's tough to make it out there unless you know someone in the industry or like to suck dick.

shit when fishermen come in the ladies know it...im gonna stop there so i dont offend anyone.

well as Frank Zappa would sing.......

"Hey hey hey all you girls in these Industrial towns
I know youre probly gettin tired of all the local clowns
They never give you no respect they never treat you nice
So perhaps you oughta try a little friendly advice
And be a crew slut
Hey, you'll love it
Be a crew slut
Its a way of life
Be a crew slut.......

The guys in the crew
Have got a present for you!"

Oh yeah just like any other frontier silver or gold mining town a
certain amount of local and imported talent is going to look to
make life a bit easier in a more reclined position and or lifestyle.

I'd bet that there's some sort of fishing going on for most months
of the year, isn't that about right NOKUY? These boats don't earn
any jing for their owners sitting and rusting so I'm sure they fish
waters all along the upper norhtwest of the US during the various
seasons of many different species. Sometimes you hear these guys
talking about going home to Seattle where many of the boats are
actually owned out of by those big corps.......

You can always work at the bar washing glasses and cleaning up or restaurant until you get a big buck job. That proves you will work and do what you are told. They like that. I worked on the oil rigs on man made islands north of AK in the Beaufort sea. I loved the summer there watch the huge chunks of ice flow by or they would get stuck on one side we would make bets what side and day it would disappear. Don't wear tshirts under your long underwear. It gets wet and sticks to you like ice for as long as you are on the deck. Get a silk under or poly undershirt. Go to store that sells camping gear and has survival gear. I'm not talking in Florida either. I'll take questions from people who want to go. It's a real trip..... You won't regret it.!!!!!!

i'm very interested in this too! not the fishing on boats part, but the processing, that sounds money to do for 3 months...i'm almost 27, not done with college yet, have no life direction and have no idea what i want to do...so i could forsure scoot up there and bank, and see alaska like i've always wanted too...i know the laws are chill and everyone tokes, how's the herb??? pretty dank? i'm what you would call a hippy, so where are some hipster type areas, where everyone grows!? haha.... and Nokuy, you still live in Ak?? i appreciate the info you've provided kind sir...take care

Gkn

ohhh ran, that sounds like a fucking blast! you're right, that was a different time, and i wish i lived then!! no worries though, there's gotta be super chill places like that still around...i'm a florida dude that's never been to the pac northwest and i want to check it out real bad

About the Company:
Seward is 120 miles south of Alaska's biggest city, Anchorage. Established in 1965, Seward Fisheries became solely owned by Icicle Seafoods in 1978. Icicle has shore plants in Seward, Petersburg, and Egegik; a plant in Bellingham; and four floating processors.

We process black cod, halibut, herring and salmon. Black cod and halibut, IFQ (Individual Fishing Quota) seasons, will start March 15th and end when the quota is filled, or by November 15th. The season usually starts out slow and builds. We may need people as the season picks up, so if you are interested in working in April or May you should indicate that on your application. If you are planning on traveling to Seward we encourage you to call first so we can inform you of the current work status and bunkhouse availability.

The salmon season will begin around the first of June and will continue through until the end of August. During salmon season we have approximately 300 people working. We can salmon in our cannery and freeze whole salmon in the cold storage, fresh/frozen areas. If you are hired, the work area you are assigned will depend upon our needs.

Hiring Procedure
WE DO NOT GUARANTEE ANY WORK!!! This is a gamble that everyone takes when seeking employment in the seafood industry. There are many fisheries in Alaska so we recommend that you know of a few different possible fisheries to apply to in case of no work. You can apply on line or request an application to be mailed to you. Your work history, references, and work ethics are important hiring considerations. There is no way to secure a position over the phone, although we will schedule a phone interview after receiving your application. If you are hired, we will ask you for a copy of your travel arrangements, and schedule you for an orientation before you make the trip to Seward.

Pay
Starting pay for processors is $7.15 per hour. Pay increases are based on the accumulation for hours as follows:
Accumulated Hours Regular Hourly Rate
0 - 600 7.15
601 - 1800 7.50
1801 - 3600 8.70
3601 - and up 10.00

As long as you receive a layoff in good standing you will retain your hours and pay rate for the following year if you decide to return. We encourage people to return.

Overtime
One and one-half times the regular rate is paid for any hours worked in excess of eight hours a day. Overtime is also paid for any hours worked in excess of 40 straight hours per week.

Accommodations
We have a bunkhouse that houses 50 employees at a daily cost of $5.00 plus tax. A refundable key deposit of $30.00 will be deducted from your first check. Returning employees receive first preference. You may put your name on the bunkhouse waiting list at the time of hire. The bunkhouse has showers, laundry and a recreation room with a DVD/VHS and satellite TV. We also have our Tent City campground with laundry facilities, showers, restrooms, and canvas tents. A damage deposit will be required if the tents are damaged or left in an unsuitable condition. Located in the plant within walking distance are more employee showers and lockers. Locks and lockers are provided for storing gear. We will be serving one meal a day Monday through Friday from April through May for those employees that a currently working. During our traditional salmon season (June, July and August) we will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Each meal will cost $3.50 per meal and it is your choice to eat that meal or not. ONLY SFI EMPLOYEES MAY USE THESE FACILITIES.

Gear and Documents
Rain gear, gloves, and boots are provided to employees at no cost. We also provide ear protection and any other required safety gear. It is recommended that you bring several changes of clothing and lots of warm socks. You will also need a hat or bandanna for work. A battery powered alarm clock is essential. If you are going to camp in our tent city, you will need a sleeping bag. Prepare for a cool, damp climate.

We Only Hire Workers that are Legally Documented to Work in the US
As the final step in the hiring process, applicants must provide us with documentation that verifies eligibility to work in the United States and their identity. For a complete list of acceptable documents, please refer to Form I-9. You may obtain a copy of this form at your local state employment office. At the time of orientation, these documents must be furnished and Form I-9 must be completed. The documents you provide must be the original document or a certified copy. They must be valid. Since we must physically examine your documents, if you cannot provide legally acceptable documentation, we cannot hire you!

When hired, an applicant may provide a single document which verifies both employment eligibility and identity. See LIST A on Form I-9. Otherwise, two documents must be provided. One document must verify identity. See LIST B. The other document must verify employment eligibility. See LIST C.

The Work
New employees start out on the slime line. While there is an art to sliming, it involves doing the same thing over and over for long periods of time. When the season is going well people work seven days a week, twelve to sixteen hours a day.

What makes it all worthwhile is the money you put in the bank and the people you work with. It's a team effort at Seward Fisheries. Everyone contributes to producing a quality product, at a low cost in a safe and supportive work environment.

The actual amount of hours a person works during salmon season depends upon where they work; how well the fishermen do; the weather; the market and how many salmon return to spawn. There is no guarantee on how much you will make; there are too many variables.

One way to limit the effect of these variables is to work for an established company like Icicle Seafoods, Inc. that has good relations with fishermen and the resources to take advantage of any opportunities that develop for a good season.

Transportation
Icicle does not pay transportation costs. Seward Bus Lines leaves Anchorage daily at 2:30 pm and arrives in Seward at 5:30 pm. The cost for a one-way ticket to or from Seward is $40.00. Call to confirm. Their Seward phone number is (907) 224 - 3608. Their Anchorage location is at 3335 Suite B, Fairbanks Street, phone (907) 563 - 0800

About the Company:
Harbor Crown Seafoods was established in 2003 as a modern, mid-sized processing plant. As various fisheries in Alaska were rationalized to provide stability to the industry, the vision of the company was to provide fishermen and consumers an alternative to the traditional based, international processing conglomerates. With a business model focused on low overhead, flexibility and value added products, the company has successfully enabled its fleet to enjoy higher prices for their catch, while allowing consumers direct availability to this extraordinary resource.

The primary product of Harbor Crown is Pacific Cod. With the world wide decline of this precious commodity, the Bering Sea has provided a strictly managed alternative for consumers to embrace. Under stringent guidelines with its fishing fleet, Cod is processed into Head and Gut form, quick frozen and shipped to points across the globe. In addition to this product, Harbor Crown is the premier producer of Alaskan Octopus which is utilized in Asian and European markets. With its recent entrance into the prestigious crab fisheries, the company has positioned itself to provide value added incentives to its fleet, while allowing customers a dining experience they can relate to.

I know a lot of boat s and the Capts.

I know a lot of boat s and the Capts.

Deck hands on halibut boats make great money helping tourist bait their hook and land their fish if it is too big. You then wash the boat on the ride in. The capt. Tells you that the deckhands work for tips. Some of those boats can hold 20 to 30 fisherman. I prefer the smaller boats. You fight the tide more but you can move around a lot. Imagine fishing in 400 ft of water with a 4lb lead weight for the sinker and a big cod head for bait. Reeling that up sucks without a fish. I recommend anyone planning on going fishing sport or work you better get you upper body in shape now. Some of those halibut are over 400lbs. They have to be shot a lot with a shotgun usually. I can help musicians too! Got a band???? Got a promo??? Bands play a lot up there but hey get paid a lot too. So many musicians would go to Fairbanks during the late 70's and 80's and would make more than double what they made in the states plus they got a free band house too. When their contract was up they quit and would form a band with someone else and every one knew every ones set list. Sometimes we would play rotation and swap player during break not knowing who was coming. That was so much fun and the quality of the jams we got in was just a shame that they aren't all on tape. Only one exists to my knowledge and I have it!!. I miss those goes. We would love a gig to have to get ready. The best guitarists and pianist and drummers and bassist and some incredible vocals at times. Someone get rich and let me get the band. You won't be wrong. One bloke called Elton John a bloody queen once in the studio and Elton cried. He was playing a bass gig for Kiki Dee who Elton helped a lot. His bass gig wasn't that long!! He got a better one playing in a band called Caravan and another English band called Curved Air. They were big world wide but never hit the states very well. They toured it twice but not with much success. Sorry for getting of the subject. If you need a few tips just write me. Peace,

Camping necessities in AK

Camping necessities in AK

Lots of clothesline rope the cotton stuff. You can build a tent anywhere with a roll of clear plastic and some clotheline and a few sticks your good to go. Take a nice sleeping pad. On the plastic the wind blows like crazy sometimes out on the spit. It will flatten a dome tent. Try to build a tent over your tent and make a small city so you can communicate easier. Get a small roll of the clear plastic that has the diamond thread pattern going through it for durability. That will keep the city together!! Get your tent near some of the facilities although they have lines where you can camp. Good luck up there. If you don't go you will hate yourself the rest of your life!! Get up there get a Drivers License then you can get a pot card but it's up to you to find it. It's usually always topnotch. If you stay a couple of years they give a Permanent Fund check to people who have lived longer than a year 1/2 I think. The last one was $1000. Every Oct everyone even babies gets a check and their parent go party on it!! I wonder how many times that happens? Thats sad. Got to go.... Peace....

18 year old knows nothing

18 year old knows nothing

I showed up in AK with my best friend from school. Our plan was to work 9 weeks and then we could go to college and pay for it ourselves and fail but on our money. We made the mistake of getting in the Culinary union I was a dishwasher. A dishwasher who worked 50 hrs washing dishes then maybe unload the produce 50 70 hrs a week. The year I turned 19 I made $43k and had free room and board like a small hotel. 2 men to a room 56 men to a barracks. Got clean sheets every3 days bed made every day with clean towels. Steak 2 times a week and lobster usually once a week but at least every 2 weeks. Lunches were prepacked or you could do your own Subway thing. It was working Utopia!! The camp I worked at had 2300 men and women mostly men. We were fortunate to live in subrob's hometown!! You wouldn't believe the little place. I have no idea how many people that lived there before the pipeline blew through there. Kind of like Mayberry 100 miles from the next city and nowhere in between at all. The pipeline comes in all of a sudden there are bars everywhere and a bus made a route from each bar to bat to the bank and banck to the camp so you could make it to your bed. That was a cool job. 12 on and 12 off. The best job was a job my friend had right next to a place where the pipe was crossing the bridge. They stored blasting caps and a lot of equipment so he was like a security. He learned to play guitar sitting on the bus all day it was so close to the bar he could party and no one knew that he was even supposed to exist!LOL It had it's boring parts but sounds like the perfect one. Get up there now because the jobs are going out now.

i tried to send some of those to your visitor msgs on your profile...i would have had to send u 19 msgs to send them.....since they were more than 1000 charachters.

you'd be plenty fine to go up and find something tho (lots of peeps do that and have no problems).

... when u get there just hit up the dept. of labor....they have all this info, plus they can tell you who is hiring right now.

I am from the Pacific Northwest and most of the young guys that were not rich at least talked about going to Alaska to work. My step brother did it. That is why I dropped in.

You know there was a low rent apartment complex that I moved into in the 70s that was all seasonal workers from Alaska that came back to Washington to chill. All stoners and all with a bit of money for partying. It was a horseshoe shaped building with like 8 units. There was at least one pot plant growing in the soil in front of every one of them. Nothing that would ever amount to anything, but always something growing. We partied all of the time. One time someone had a quantity of acid and it was a trip. About 100 people all tripping out.

That was a different time.

did u see the recent deadliest catch about those guys that died....soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sad.....vids of them on the beach before. just sad man just sad.
