Sealed room-air exchange at night?

L

Lucy Diamond

I am in the process of planning a new medical garden.Lot's of lights, sealed room,co2,5 ton A/C etc.

In the past,I have worked a much smaller version of the above and I would change the air in the room once the lights were out.

Others have told me that it's not necessary to change the air in a sealed room environment but my instinct is that it would be a good thing for the plants to have a fresh air change every night.Obviously, during the light hours, the room remains sealed while they get their CO2 supplementation.

Does anyone have any knowledge to share on this topic?

The point is...getting fresh air to the plants.

It's also a way to reduce night time humidity.Moves that humid air out,and fresh air in while the plants sleep.

My thinking(and this is just a hunch, nothing more)is that changing the room air every 24 hours while the plants sleep, will reduce pathogens, bacteria etc. that could build up in a "stale" air environment.

You would be wasting c02 and increasing the chances of pests infesting your garden. Bad idea. If the room stays sealed and you don't pack in the pest with you---you won't get them. Just about every pest gets in through the air. Keep it sealed 24/7. Use sulfur for mildew, black for algea. Bleach for bacteria.

The plants give off fresh oxygen on their own.

The only reason for airflow is to induce cO2/cool, and you are making your own. So no need to exchange air.

I have run a sealed room for quite some years with no air exchange. I have a full room within a larger room. AC, CO2, light vents from outside the sealed room, throught the light hood, to the outside, dehumidifier, can fan and large can filter, etc, etc. I just put a new roof over the rooms and decided to add a 4 inch line from the outside room, through the roof into the sealed room and it's drawing fresh air from the outside room using a 4 inch can fan on a speed controller. Never had a problem prior to introducing fresh air, just thought it would be something to try to see if it gave any noticeable difference. So far the results are.......nothing. No noticeable difference at all. If all else fails, I'll hook it up to my humidity meter, reverse the fan and have another way to lower humidity which was also a thought when adding the fan.

Son of man-I would not be wasting CO2 because I would only be changing the air at NIGHTIME...when CO2 is not running.Pests will not be an issue either,as intakes would be hepa filtered.I've never had powdery mildew and would never use a sulphur burner...poison!Better to get your room climate sorted out so that powdery mildew is not an issue.

I just think the more one can approximate nature indoors, the happier the plants will be.And nature always provides fresh air.I understand that plants take in CO2 and put out oxygen...but I am still wondering if they are better off with a nighttime air exchange.Like I mentioned already,it also helps with nighttime humidity issues.

c02 doesn't just disappear when the lights go off. My rooms usually have at least 1300ppm before the lights and burners kick on in the morning.

Sulfur is great as long as you take it out 3 weeks before the end. A precaution worth taking.

A sealed room means just that, sealed. Humidity is controlled by a DH.

My room is sealed but I dont run CO2. The only air exchange is done from me opening the door every day.

There is no need to vent the air at night but it sounds like you are pretty convinced to do it anyway.

Like everyone else said, why waste your time and money on somthing that will do nothing but probally harm your grow?

WHAT!!!!! No wonder you've had some, and many, of the problems you've had. I mean WTF? You've been running 9000 watts and have relied on 'opening the door every day' for fresh air? Seriously...:bashhead:. Now I partly understand where them leaf spots have been coming from. You would have been sooooo much better off with half those watts and a proper open or closed setup.

I don't know what else to say.

haha i'm so glad i saw this thread

just came from a friend's house, where i got the generous gift of a Sentinel CTC-1 digital co2 controller and a regulator for my tank!

and to top it off, he also gifted me with a 10" vortex so that i could "vent the room of all the old co2 every few hours"

??????

apparently the accepted practice around here is to use your tanks to get the PPM to 1500, then vent it all out, then turn your fans off and boost co2 again, and repeat.

does this sound crazy to anybody else? or am i missing something.

Sounds like a very good way of wasting Co2 to me

That's no friend--with a c02 tank as the source---he's trying to bankrupt you!
And that's why you don't fuck your friends girl. :muahaha:

I have to disagree. Most of my problems have come from me not getting some males out and having seeds. Most of my tables have been getting around .65 GPW and look how much I can still improve. My bulbs are 1.5 years old, some bulbs are straight cheapo HPS non grow bulbs, no CO2, cheap reflectors.

Thats not to say more CO2 wouldnt help.

Yes thats crazy. People vent because they dont have A/C and they need to get rid of the heat. Thats why having an A/C is important. If you vent the CO2 out, you might as well burn dollar bills for firewood too.

Your thinking is backwards. You'll help introduce them into your room from the outside.

Hey Y1F...I've been going along with assumption that your room had a generator. Honestly just tried to help out in the past, spending my time cause I've been where you're at, and was really taken aback you had no generator and that you were expecting to keep a 9000 watt room healthy by keeping a door open. If you don't think things can show up like deficiencies when really it's just totally inadequate CO2 availability I think you're mistaken. I know you know your current setup has some inadequacies and am sure over time you'll get it up to speed. For sure that setup is hurting yields which I know you've been working on. It's just a shame you've really, in part IMO/IME, just been fighting you're enviro thinking it might be something else. Not saying that's THE cause of things but for sure a contributor.

Saw your other thread about a burner and feel it will make a night and day difference if I'm understanding your setup properly. Normally not my style but if that's what it took pretty sure you'll see a big improvement and will pay for itself pretty quickly.

I had some friends in the area who ran the same GH nute program, the same strain, the same medium and hydro style and all had open systems....yet I produced a by far superior 'product' and easily out yielded every one else all due to just better air flow and environmental control.
